I don't usually agree with Elie Weisel - and I don't think he really cares if I do - but he always makes me stop and think. As a protestant, I have never heard of about half of these characters but Weisel discusses them so interestingly that it was not a problem.

There are three major sections to this work. In the first Wiesel tells the stories of Biblical figures, Noah Jepthah and his daughter Ruth Solomon Ezekiel Daniel Ezra and Nehemiah Esther. In the second section he writes about Taludic figures, the houses of Hillel and Shammai, Hanina Ben Dosa, Elezar ben Azaryah, Rabbi Ishmael, Rabbi Akiba,Ben Azzai and Ben Zoma, Eilsha Ben Abouya Rabbi Hananiah ben Teradyon Rabbi Meir and Brurya, Rabbi Shimon Bar yohai and his son, Rabbi Zeira, Rav and Shmuel. in the final section he writes of hasidic masters, the Shpoler Zeide, the Apter Rebbe, Rabbi Avraham the Angel, Kotze and Iabitze, the Ostrowtzer.The writing is informed with a true love and feelling for the Tradition.It is also infirmed by the inquiring questioning spirit of Wiesel who challenges and questions as he describes. The average American possessing a basic knowledge of the history of nuclear weapons, at least to my anecdotal experience, believes nuclear weapons have been used twice since their creation, both times by the United States. The American military dropped the bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, to end World War II, within days of each other, in August 1945. This history is factually incorrect.It is quite true that nuclear weapons have been used only twice in war, but they have been detonated many times in testing, and the results have been devastating.Keith M. Parsons, a professor of philosophy, and Robert A. Zaballa, a nuclear physicist, have written a concise account of the remarkable yet tragic history of nuclear testing in the Marshall Islands of the Pacific. In “Bombing the Marshall Islands: Cold War Tragedy,” Parsons and Zaballa recount the fascinating events chronicling nuclear testing and the impact on those physically affected by the blasts.The authors’ descriptions of the blasts themselves are truly frightening. One of a series of tests was named Castle Bravo, which they describe as “a stupendous blast of 15 megatons – the equivalent of the simultaneous detonation of fifteen million tons of conventional high explosive. The fireball reached four miles in diameter and excavated a crater 250 feet deep and 6,500 feet across. The mushroom cloud rose to a height of over sixty miles in less than ten minutes. The power of the blast greatly exceeded expectations.”According to the authors, “During that time, the United States conducted sixty-seven nuclear tests on and in the vicinity of Bikini. The combined explosive yield of these events was 108 megatons – the equivalent of one Hiroshima-sized bomb detonated daily for nineteen years. As a result, some of these islands were grossly polluted with radioactive fallout and rendered uninhabitable… The beauty of basic physics is part of the story, but so are terror, suffering, and death.”One of the reasons this book is so valuable is in its inherent fairness. The authors do not take political sides on the issue. In fact, they take care to sympathize and state the arguments for both points of view. While the testing clearly had awful effects, Parsons and Zaballa clearly explain why the United States felt the urgent need to test during the Cold War period in order to assure the survival of the United States. They write, “One view was that these weapons were purely evil and their eradication was the only hope for humanity. The opposed view was that eradication was impossible, at least at that time, and that deterrence was the best way to avoid a nuclear catastrophe.”Describing their book as a “scholarly popular history” written for all, the authors write, “The lesson we draw is straightforward: When nuclear war is not only conceived as possible but is planned as a basic element of policy, the risks run during the period of nuclear testing are completely unsurprising.”One physicist recorded his observation of one test. “Suddenly there was an enormous flash of light, the brightest light I have ever seen or that I think anyone has ever seen. It blasted; it pounced; it bored its way right through you. It was a vision that was seen with more than the eye. It was seen to last forever.”The authors continue, “The initial flash may seem to last forever, but in a few seconds the explosion dims to the point where it is bearable by the human eye. The light resolves into a massive fireball, like a second sun, still intensely brilliant. Then it quickly transforms into a great column of fire, thrusting upwards at terrific speed and displaying a spectrum of terrific colors. The iconic mushroom cloud forms and rapidly rises, finally topping off miles into the atmosphere, far higher than any mountain. The devastating shockwave propagates rapidly outward from the hypocenter.”They quote a report as stating, “It is clear that the use of this weapon would bring about the destruction of innumerable human lives; it is not a weapon that can be used exclusively for the destruction of material installations of military or semi-military purposes. Its use therefore carries much farther than the atomic bomb itself the policy of exterminating civilian populations.” The authors continue, “Because the hydrogen bomb would have no inherent limits on its destructive capacity, such a weapon could only be used to devastate vast areas and kill huge numbers of civilians.” They conclude: “Therefore, a super bomb might become a weapon of genocide.”While residents of the islands were forced to evacuate for the testing, the authors chide the United States government for dispossessing people on the promise that humanity was being served without fully explaining the impact on their lives. Nevertheless and contrary to promises, residents almost certainly were never going to be able to return to their native lands, at least not as a safe locale.The effects are difficult to contemplate. Upon returning to one island, “…they found that all of their traditional foods had changed. One traditional food is the arrowroot, which is a starch similar to tapioca that is obtained from the rhizomes of a local plant. After exposure to the fallout, the arrowroot died or shrank in size, and burned the moth when consumed. Other foods had changed color, which made them appear unappetizing and maybe dangerous.”On birth defects, the authors state, “…the islanders suffered an unusually large number of miscarriages and births of children with severe defects. Some women gave birth to unformed fetuses that were not recognizably human, which midwives referred to as jellyfish babies.’” Horrible stuff.In addition to this remarkable history, the Appendices at the back of the book actually serve as terrific primers for physics in general. It was the first time, at an author’s recommendation, that I read an Appendix first in order to better understand a book.“Bombing the Marshall Islands” is a fascinating journey to a complex time in American and human history. This book deserves a wide readership as Parsons and Zaballa treat the subject with great knowledge and expertise, as well as sympathy and understanding.

Beautiful book for people who are transfixed on the visual aspects of movies. If you are an aspiring cinematographer, I strongly recommend it this one even though they are working with stock film, it is still a great way to get into a pro's head. Another book that I like even more than this is Alemendro's A man with a Camera. A rare a book but well worth it.

This is a timeless and exciting book that guides you thru the cinematography process - these directors of photographers were fearless and true artists - its so lovely to read what they have to say. This is a must-have book.

Informative, a good read

It is a very good book for film lovers.

It was a birthday present for my husband and the description said a signed copy...when I opened the copy it was signed by a cinematographer--it made the book even more special. Too bad the person he signed it to didn't have my husband's name.

I learn something valuable about cinematography and my favorite films every time I go back and read it. Highly recommended.

It's hard to review this book, because it's the end of the road. I've reached the clearing at the end of the path so to speak. I feel like I have to review the journey as a whole, and that's tough. It's been a hell of a ride. Before the Gunslinger I hadn't really picked up a long series like this in quite a while. In light of that, I decided to space the series out, and really make it last. That turned out to be an excellent decision on my part, because it made the journey that much longer, and that much sweeter. Roland's quest for the Tower was a long one. Full of excitement, horror, sacrifice, love, darkness.. and light. And I think Stephen King wrapped up the ending perfectly. I loved it. I couldn't rate The Dark Tower anything less than five stars after finishing it. Full-body chills were achieved and a good portion of time was spent staring at the wall in front of me. It honestly made me want to crack open the Gunslinger and take the trip again.I'm sure that someday I will.

With The Dark Tower movies beginning to take shape, it seems logical to assume there will be a resurgence of people wanting to see what these books are all about. I started Book 1 about 5 months ago and Roland's journey just ended for me (several minutes ago, in fact!). You're most likely going to read horrible reviews on here, how Stephen King dropped the ball and this book is a hopeless letdown. My personal opinion of the matter is this book is quite simply the best of the entire series. The pacing, revelations, surprises, and twists absolutely never let up. From traveling under Caste Discordia to having dinner with Dandelo, I was completely enthralled from beginning to end. The last 20 pages or so of the book are your call to make what you will of how everything wraps up. Personally, it isn't how I wanted the story to end, but that in no way devalues the absolutely brilliant 99.9% of it. This series is my adult "Harry Potter" series. I will cherish these stories and will be reading Roland's journey to the tower again for you ears to come.

The only complaint I could possibly make is that the book came without a dust jacket. Big deal. Otherwise it is in excellent condition & may well never have been read. So that's that for the condition.I've been a Stephen King fan since I was technically too young to read his books (I first read "The Shining" at 5 1/2), but the Dark Tower series has always been one of my favourite things. Yeah, people complain that it was too long between books and that each book was too stylistically different and that they just plain don't like what happens in a book, but here's one 'constant reader' who has nary a complaint. I have loved the whole series and this the final book is absolutely perfect. I read it cover to cover in one sitting and just sat there smiling. If you're anything of a Stephen King fan, I strongly recommend the Dark Tower series. And if you've read all of them but this one, shame on you! Get it right now and start reading! You will not be disappointed!

It's been a long time since I first read the Dark Tower. It was originally a wait I thought would not end, but thankfully it did and that was now well over 10 years ago. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the series again over the last few months. It is a long read and a time was slow and hard going. But it is always worth it.The last book if the series is arguably its best. I always appreciated that the loose ends were tied adequately. For me that was important at the time and I found it satisfying again. This last story is full of the twists and turns you come to expect as you journey to the tower. It is final and at time pulls hard on the heart.This is a great read. A great way to finish the epic story of Roland and the quest for the Dark Tower.

EDIT: I forgive everything. The ending was so spectacular, so real, so poignant to me I am reeling from it. I forgive all the irritations I've mentioned - this series is the best reading experience I've ever undertaken in my life.I'm a die-hard Stephen King fan. I'm the Constant Reader, the kind that would read the King's laundry list. I read all of his books many times, usually within days of release, except the Dark Tower. I thought it would be a Western-gun-type story and wasn't interested, but I finally got into it a month ago and I marveled at how I could possibly miss it - it truly is his greatest work, with a kind on-the-edge thrilling pace and steaming plot you seldom see in his horror novels. I read all seven books continuously over the past few weeks, couldn't put it down, and getting more and more disappointed. You can see how young King and old King's writing differs so greatly in both plot and language. Young King is tightly disciplined, highly structured, no unnecessary and distracting insertions that's really about the writer's ego than of service to the story. By this final book, I caught myself rolling my eyes frequently at unnecessary author intrusions to the story and plot, which is getting weirder and weirder all the time, like a bad psychedelic trip. Even the way the characters speak to each other doesn't flow with the natural ease and seamless belief in his old books, with frequent author intrusions about what Eddie or Roland or whoever is like, e.g. "...we might as well look at him a bit more closely. We won't take long, for Pimli Prentiss isn't central to our tale of Roland..." - IS THIS NECESSARY? My good man, just tell the tale and leave the narrator out of it. Let your characters speak for themselves. By the end of Song of Susannah I could barely follow the narrative with real immersion (I skipped the entire series of journal logs by King at the end of the last book. What was that about? Totally unnecessary)That said, it's still one awesome ride. I know how much work it is to write a good book. So despite all this, the merits outweighs the faults, and it's all worth it.

I've seen this guy's name pop up in several writings and or documentaries about WWII. Andy Rooney mentioned him in his book "My War" about Rooney's experiences as a war correspondent with the 8th Air Force. I just watched the History Channel documentary called WWII in Color for a second time and like the first time, was particularly drawn to his story. I had remembered that Stiles became a fighter pilot after completing his missions on a bomber crew and was killed in action. I hadn't remembered that he wrote a book though, so when I saw that I had to find it. Thankfully it was available for my Kindle. So the whole time I'm reading it, there's this awful truth that as the reader I posses knowledge about what will happen to him that he doesn't have at that time in his life. Because this book ends while he's still a member of a bomber crew. Another thing that's so poignant about the experience of reading this story is that Bert Stiles is just a kid. Being a 60 year old man I just kept thinking that, though he'd be 90 or so now had he lived, he didn't live and so is forever just a kid tragically lost in that war like so , many others. His story just stops in time in 1944 or 45. And he's so funny and so intelligent and sensitive it makes this book burn into your mind in a most personal way. I'm better for having read it, I know that.

He wanted to be a writer when the war was over. But that wasn’t to be. After completing his 35 missions in bombers, he could have gone back to the US as a flight instructor. Instead he volunteered to fly fighters which he did until he was killed in action on 26 November 1944 in a dogfight over Germany.Stiles never saw his memoir published. He easily would have been one of the finest writers of his generation. Of the millions of small tragedies of World War Two and a lesson in how war kills men, and now women, indiscriminately.

If Catcher in the Rye had been published ten years earlier, this could have been its sequel: Holden Goes to War, but without the humorous elements.It is an interesting read, but more because it allows one to experience the angst of a young man as he serves in air combat rather than any historical content. Much of this book is reflection on personal relationships and experiences. It seems to have been written as a stream of consciousness moving from one thought to the next against the background of bombing misions over Europe in 1944.It should be noted that the author, having completed his tour with B 17 bombers, transferred to fighter aircraft as he had initially wished. He was killed in air combat late in the war. Had I not been familiar with that fact, I do not know that I would have read this book.Be aware that in this Kindle edition, there are text errors; there is an annoying frequency of dropped words at the end of lines and paragraphs.

Any eye witness accounts of how these air force personnel made it through their missions and lives are valuable, and a worthwhile reminder of their sacrifices.This book has the virtue of immediacy: Bert Stiles apparently wrote it in a months' time while on leave between postings. Tragically, he died in air combat not long after, and his mother discovered the draft in his personal effects.Its rich in authenticity: its not polished like a "finished" memoir; it's also fairly discursive. So it gives a candid, 3-dimensional look at how a young airmen lived the totality of his life as a warrior, lover, late adolescent and an (unintentional) tourist in the UK. Its format mixes up descriptions of air activity, life on base, interactions with people here at home, and the author's own musings on a variety of subjects that came to mind.All this also means it needs a bit of forbearance. Had Stiles actually survived WWII and intended to publish this book, it undoubtedly would have assumed a slightly different form, and with different emphases. And he might have thought twice about the literary value of including some of his on-the-spot musings, which occasionally slow down the book and detract from its appeal.Even so, I learned things about these B-17 missions that I had not picked up elsewhere. When I try to put myself in their shoes, fear grips my heart like steel. I can only dimly imagine what it was like to endure this, and these types of books make us face it on their own terms.

This book remains one of the most complete overviews of Capoeira to the English speaking initiate. It's a good guide for ignorant rookies in that respect. The outsider-looking-in narrative really relates to a lot for the average American jumping feet first into Brazilian sub-culture.However, I got the impression at times that this book is little more than a reprinted master's thesis. As the phrase goes, "A mile wide and an inch deep". The book does a good job at helping you get into the mindset and tropes present in Capoeira culture. So it will help you understand those invisible rules no one seems to ever tell you about. But beware, its not going to solve every culture clash, political/historical perspective, or ego-game a Mestre is going to throw your way.

Having played Capoeira for several years it has been a constant problem finding reliable historical and cultural reference. Not speaking Portuguese is a problem, because most books will be written in that language. This book was written by the author to fulfil his research requirements at the University of Chicago and was published by the U of C Press. it is exhaustively researched and candidly honest about both the history of Capoeira and it's modern role in Brazil. It also covers notable personalities who have practiced the style and goes into great detail regarding the music. No techniques are diagramed in this book, but capoeira techniques are very interperative and the only way to really learn them is to play, so the lack of pictures is not really a concern. An amusing sidebar is that this book is sold shrinkwrapped. this means that martial arts dorks who by it to practice pre-rehearsed moves then go out to say that they know Capoeira find themselves out of l! uck when they get home and take the wrapping off. I think that is funny.

I used this book, along with a host of other books, transcripts, articles and recordings of capoeira to complete my undergraduate thesis in anthropology. Regarding an earlier post here, i don't think that Lewis was trying to necessarily undermine the black African origins of capoeira, but rather his experiences with capoeiristas around Brazil led him to focus on the wholly Brazilian cultural aspects (samba, too, is a cultural phenomenon with roots in Africa). While i do belive that his treatment of the African origins of capoeira were sketchy, this is to be expected as the data on capoeira's African origins is not very clear, and to the best of my knowledge is to date a matter of conjecture. The only truth regarding that matter is that capoeira did come from Africa with the (primarily West African) slaves and developed into modern capoeira while in Brazil. This last part, "in Brazil", is something that I stress in the sense that although many Caribbean and South American nations received slaves from the same parts of Africa, only Brazil's slaves and mulattos produced capoeira.More to the point of this type of entry: the book is a definite must-read for anyone (capoeirista or not) interested in the modern expressions of african diasporan culture.

This book brings a good deal of information on the history of capoeira and on the phylosophy behind it. After a few years practicing it, I finally had in my hands some background to understand some of the the principles, and part of the history of this sport. The author apparently has had contact with many mestres, both in Brazil and in the US, and has done quite an intensive survey on historical records, to get to his conclusions. Furthermore, he analyzes capoeira under an anthropological light, giving a scientific taste to the book that we don't find in most publications about it (although I don't agree with some of his interpretations). My only complain is that I would like to see more figures in the book, which would make it more interesting to people with less knowledge on the subject.

Yes, I think this book deserves five stars, because it gave me insight; both professional and personal. Training Capoeira for seven years (including two trips to Brazil for the same reason) has taken me to the strange border between two cultures: my own Danish average European socio-historic background, and the Afro-brazilian transcultural vegetation in which Capoeira flourishes. Alouring - and as Lewis notes: deceptive, Capoeira as a performance reveals conflictuality on the Afro-brazilian social and historical level, which differs from the writers own background; in this case quite similar to my case. The task of relating to this difference is met by Ring of Liberation through respect of the ontic 'way' of the capoeirista, and at the same time maintaining an epistemic approach. What this means, is that Ring of Liberation can be read by the intellectual layman as well as the non-brazilian capoeira enthusiast, as a guide to experiences already had or about to happen...great stuff!

Another biased account of Capoeira which lacks the scientific rigor to connect Capoeira with its African roots. Ring of Liberation, attempts to assert Capoeira as a Brazilian art form and strips it of its African roots. Lewis's basic premise traces Capoeira to samba circles in 19th century Brazil. It remains to be seen how Capoeira could develope its fighting elements through urban samba circles in Bahia. Lewis utilizes anthropological jargon to complicate the story of Capoeira, it seems to be a mask to hide his agenda. An agenda which seeks to undermine Capoeira as an empowering agent for its descendants (Africans in the Diaspora). Ring of Liberation should be praised as another book about Capoeira, but severly critisized for its biased nature and cultural disempowering approach!
