Book is good, as expected. The shipping was terrible. The book was shipped in only a bubble envelope and one corner was ripped open and scuffed the book corner. I would press for a return but I needed it for class. Not happy with shipping quality.

This is a fun book to read. No. Really. It is! It is rare for a physics book to talk about spherical chicken or nut roasts, for example. The principles and examples are clearly delineated. There are margin notes from the authors. Suggestions for what math you need for certain sections. Biographies of major players in thermal physics. And suggestions for further reading for some chapters.

I would rate this one of the better undergraduate physics books. Why? Because it most effectively teaches and stresses the important physics behind thermodynamics; this is something that most textbooks don't do. Once the physics are learnt and deeply understood, going up to higher level books is easy. Having said that, the book could be improved by the authors having given more (at least 2x as many) questions as they have in the current book.

Excellent book. Excellent condition.

I used this book in conjunction with Kittel for an upper division undergraduate course, and was extremely happy that I did. I constantly turned to this text when Kittel became too dense and confusing. This text really helped clarify many of the essential concepts of this course. In addition, I consistently used this as a reference. This book consolidates important information and equations very clearly and concisely; something that Kittel does very poorly. However, Kittel was still essential in getting at the root of the physics behind the concepts. Kittel is a much deeper book when asking "Why?". Blundell and Blundell is a wonderful text, but is not the best stand-alone text. I highly recommend it as a supplemental text.

Great page and print quality

This is Raymond's latest book which is basically an updated version of his other book, 'Never Be Sick Again'. I bought both and gave this copy away to a friend as I like the style of the first book better and I did not receive any greater revelations from his newer copy. They are both excellent books which he points out the basic causes of all diseases and lets the reader know that if they want to stay healthy and fit they need not take any nutritional advice from the average medical doctor who have never been schooled in this subject and who just want to prescribe drugs and surgery.

If you want to stop feeling sick and achey, this book explains what's really going on and how to correct it. Well worth the reading and studying. I started losing weight and feeling better in 2-3 days without trying. Not a diet. Just shows you what's wrong with your current diet and points you in the right direction. Amazing results.Raymond Francis may strike you as a crackpot if you haven't done your research yet. But what he says stands up under close scrutiny. He cuts through all the commercial misinformation and shows you why the American diet is sick-making and even fatal, how the medical business treats the symptoms and carefully avoids the root cause, and how you can change all that and become healthy and live to 100 years. Highly recommended.

I have studied health and experimented on myself with every diet, cleanse, supplement etc for 40 years, and when it is all said and done, this book sums it up.

If you take your time and read it you will fine you can change your life, Health is a choice. You do not have to be sick and he shows you how not to be. I am in my 70s and I feel better today then I have in years thanks to this book and a few others. Be healthy and live well, like I said health is a choice.

As in the X files..... "THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE!" A must ,,,, MUST read if your concerned about the WRONG direction and even criminal direction our health care has gone.... FDA,,, AMA,,,, CDC,,, all nothing but a Mafia protection racket for Big PHARMA! This guy is not the only man with the courage to come forward,,, hundreds of GOOD HONEST people have come forward with his SAME conclusions... READ on suffer the sad fate of our failed and in many cases evil, corrupt organizations that are suppose to PROTECT us, but in reality PROTECT the Big Corporations!

A great book. If you are interested in learning the truth about health, the food we eat, what the body needs to be at optimal health, this is on my must read list. He has some great information and isn't vague like some other books. To many lies out there, things we have just believed our whole life, things we have been told are healthy that aren't, things we eat that are poison to us, but because we are told all of this in society, we have no clue we are harming our bodies and we have no clue we can change our health but we can. Good info, on the must read list. Also try, what in the cell is going on. That's a god one very detailed in how the body works and what it needs also. Two thumbs up. Thanks for a great book and some truth amongst so many lies being spoon fed to society!!!

The author makes some valid points on topics regarding the body and how it is self healing for the most part. I do believe that your MD just likes to give you pills which give you other unwanted side effects as well as not "curing" anything.

Great information. The book is well written at a level most anyone can understand. It really makes you stop and think about what you are surrounding yourself with and putting into your body. I have been slowing incorporating some of the concepts and I actually feel better. Everyone should read this book.

They give definitions for stuff but lack concrete examples to improve understanding. It isn't until you try to do their end of the chapter questions that you realize how lacking this book is. You see something like "Describe Datum A" as a questions, flip through the chapter and realize they never explained how to describe a datum. The problem isn't your understanding of the material, but rather they never give an example of how to do this and the answer could be one of many answers that you could use. I have found youtube videos and online websites that teach this material better than this book.

Purchased this book for a class. I found it to be one of the better textbooks. The book was to the point, explaining everything clearly. The chapters continue to reintroduce subjects you learn at the very beginning. Building upon each subject at a steady pace.

Good book with a great approach to GDnT. I feel there should be a blueprint to the questions and tests for self study purpose. Some more intricate examples along the way could really show how GDnT works on more complex pieces of hardware. In a class room the instructor or professor will always be there to answer ones questions. Studying alone it is more difficult to punch through a problem and get a clear understanding sometimes.

Sometimes hard to follow and not many good explanations for answering the chapter test questions

Good for precision machining

Bad product

Excellent book, it is easy to understand.

I use this on a weekly basis, it is an invaluable tool.

#74,613 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

As hard as it is to believe, I was just diagnosed with Huntington's a few weeks ago. July 23rd, 2015. I went to the HDSA website to figure out the full ramifications of what that meant. They had an article about Lisa's novel. I immediately ordered it and it is an accurate description of my life. I'm 63 and had been showing some signs of chorea and some memory problems for about 4 years. 2 years ago I was diagnosed by my PCP and neurologist after getting an MRI in Florida as having "a chorea" but definitely not Parkinson's. They were both baffled and never mentioned HD. I moved to California last year and my new neurologist eventually said I might have Huntington's and I got a DNA blood test. (41 CAG repeats in HD language.) I knew nothing about "prodone" until I read Lisa's book. It explained a lot about my entire adult life and gave me an invaluable new perspective on my mother's "mental illness's." I'm actually relieved with this diagnosis because I finally have answers as to why I'm like I am. I have found a great local support group and am also getting on a list for any future clinical trials. I live by myself with my dog. I can still take care of myself and am able to drive. I figure I have at least 5 to 10 years minimum and totally optimistic that there will be drugs developed in my lifetime that will slow or halt the progression of this awful disease. And maybe even a cure. I am so grateful to Lisa Genova for writing this book and the serendipitous way it appeared the week I needed it most.

I liked the story behind the O'Brien family which is about how this family is affected by Huntington's Disease which is just a cruel and heartless disease. You just feel so sorry for them all and what their lives are becoming and will become because of this disease. They are a close knit, loving family which I really liked and the author wrote of them very lovingly. The author certainly did her research in explaining the symptoms of this disease. Although I did not like the ending and felt there was more to the story that could have been written I would still recommend this book. I love the writing style of this author Lisa Genova and have read some of her others books such as Still Alice, which I highly recommend. I do plan on reading more books from this author.

Compassion for humankind is what Genova seeks ,and this book offers the setting in which to practice it. The O'Briens, the entire family, are individually introduced to Huntington's Disease. First, one of Boston's Finest, develops its strange symptoms and discovers cholera and other behaviors are to worsen until his early death. That news is not the worst. He learns the disease is genetic and his grown kids have a 50/50 chance of developing the same gene. He feels responsible.Would you want to take a test to tell you your future? Each of the four offspring struggles and decides. One can feel nothing but compassion for this Irish Catholic family who have worked hard and have a dreadful future. This disease, like many others, is truly unfair. I particularly became attached to Joe during the story, and literally held my breath while watching the disease take over, but not destroy, his life.Genova again has written a thoroughly excellent book . It will stay with me. The disease, though, must expunged!

I worked with a Huntington's patient in a hospital setting while I was still a practicing registered nurse--it was a soul crushing experience. The entire time I was reading this novel, all I could think about was that poor woman, in the final stages of her disease, trying to stand so we could get her into her wheelchair. Chorea looks alien. Joints aren't supposed to move the way hers were moving. She was trying so hard to talk to her daughter, but her mouth was incapable of making any words...only grunts. That woman had a profound effect on my entire nursing career. I know she's likely no longer living, but I still find myself wondering if she is alive, how is she doing? Were her children HD gene positive? Did that awful gene die with her? This novel was like that nursing experience...I have no doubt it will have a profound effect on me for years to come.It wasn't Ms. Genova's finest work...that honor goes to Still Alice, but it was an excellent, character-driven novel. If you go into this book expecting an action-packed drama, you're going to be unhappy. This book deals more with the internal dialogue of each family member, particularly Joe and Katie, as they deal with Joe's diagnosis and what it means for each of them and their family. At it's heart, this book is about choices. I was truly a bit surprised by how little Huntington's disease, and it's affects on the body, was actually discussed. Having just finished Every Note Played, also by Lisa Genova, where the reader gets down and dirty with ALS, I was expecting, well, more. Not going to lie...although I understand why the author concluded the book like she did, I was disappointed. Nevertheless, if you have enjoyed other Genova novels, you'll enjoy Inside the O'Briens as well.3.5 stars

My husband passed away 2 1/2 years ago at the age of 49 from HD. Our daughters were elementary age when we were given the results over the phone (not the way it should be done). My husband's family had no idea HD was in their family genetics. I truly appreciate that an author researched and wrote what each family member experiences. Our daughters lost their father at the ages of 16 and 18. Both girls talk about getting tested. I pray much like Joe each day in hope that they both have negative results.

I purchased several books to help me navigate my way through the process of bringing my product to market. The books I purchased are 1)The Mom Inventors Handbook 2)Inventing on a Shoestring Budget 3)Inventor's Notebook: A Patent It Yourself Companion 4)Patent It Yourself, 13th Edition (this one). When this book popped up on Amazon Vine shortly thereafter, I exchanged the one I purchased for the "vine" book (since "Patent it yourself" was the most expensive of the lot). Well, I can see why it is. Patent It Yourself is the most comprehensive of the ones that I purchased and I think it is worth the extra money. I bought mine with the companion workbook and these are the two books I use the most and they work beautifully together. Highly recommended! Is this review helpful? Please let me know. Vote. :-)

I learned a lot from this book. Patenting is not easy even after reading this but I definitely have a much better understanding of patents and other IP protections (copyrights, trademarks) after reading it. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to understand patents, even if you still plan to use a patent law firm to handle your patent. The only downside is that it's a really big book, so it's kind of a pain to lug around if you are like me and you like to read on the go (on airplanes, at the beach, etc.)

This book points out what is CLEARLY an abuse of Federal Red Tape. Just a quick "thumb through" of the book would scare anyone away from taking the easier route and hiring a patent attorney. However, for the young entrepreneur who has a great idea for taking mankind to the next level but no money....this IS the answer. This book gives you step by step on how to prepare your patent application to sketching schematics or plans for your device or idea. It is everything you need....except the incredible amount of time it will take....which of course....is why patent attorneys cost so much money.

This book was incredibly helpful. I had never written up a patent application before, and when I checked around for prices with attorneys, I was typically quoted $10K. After spending the time to go through this book and closely follow it when writing up the patent, I now understand why attorneys charge $10K. It was a very time consuming process. I used Google patent for my patent search, then I followed the steps in this book, writing my patent up as I made my way through the book. I would have been lost in this process without the instructions and examples provided in the book.I am still waiting to hear back from the patent office to see if there are changes I need to make in my application.I highly recommend this book, it can save lots of $ in attorney fees. But you have to be willing to put in the effort and time yourself, and there are many details you have to pay attention to when writing up the application.

I am at the process of filing a patent myself. I exclusively using this book to write my patent andis still on going. The books said if you like the way how an existing similar patent claim is written, copy the language as long as you have something new to distinguish from the existing patent. WRONG!!! My claim got rejected because it is so similar to an existing patent language. The examiner did not even get to the new part because the language is so similar. You cannot expect the examiner to have time to go through every sentence in detail!!! This cost me months to amend the claims. Also, most of the forms at the back of the book is out dated, you need to download from the USPTO.As a follow up review. Two deadly thing about this book. It say nothing about the amendment process. This is where the battle is.Also the book is WRONG about changing the Claims. The book said you cannot add new material in the Claim. WRONG. It is the Specification that you cannot add new material. You even have to sign on the form that there is no new material in the Specification. Not the Claim. The book talked as if everything is easy, it's not. I ended up had to read a lot of article in the USPTO site. The saving thing is USPTO is very helpful. When I called, they really spent the time talk me through a lot of things. Make use of that, you'll be surprised how different they are from the other government agencies like DMV etc. Make sure you read up the amendment process and limitations in what you can do and how many times you can do. The book say nothing about this. I wonder people gave good rating ever gone through the whole patent process. If I have to rate this, I will give this zero star.

Pros:- Detailed explanation of patent writing, how to write wide claims, what makes a good claim.- Great insight on how the USPTO operates internally and how to maximize your chances the claims will hold.- Very easy-to-read, even for someone who has no experience in law or writing patents. The author explains some legalese without boring you.- Good discussion on licensing.- Strong explanations for filing the patent, prosecuting the patent and maintaining the patent.- The author makes a great effort to tackle on foreign filing and PCT despite it being very confusing and complicated.Cons (all minor)- There are a couple of sections that may be best left for the appendix, e.g. I saw several pages about how to fill an application form and attach a receipt, what address to send it to, what to click on the website, which were a little wordy.- The images are almost impossible to see on the Kindle even with the max zoom since some of them are patent/license pages. Would be great if that got fixed.- Some of the areas seem to be a little out of the layman's league - I can understanding writing the patent on your own, then prosecuting/responding to OAs on your own, but some of the scenarios that arise afterwards occasionally seem too complicated to tackle on yourself.Overall I'd highly recommend this outstanding book and I am planning to use it to write my own patents.

The Last Pass: Cousy, Russell, the Celtics, and What Matters in the End, by Gary M. Pomerantz

Review

One of the Boston Globe’s Best Books of The Year“The first Gary Pomerantz book I read was his biography of Wilt Chamberlain, which I thought was magnificent. Then I read Where Peachtree Meets Sweet Auburn, which I haven't stopped thinking about. Now I've lost myself in The Last Pass. The danger with reading Gary Pomerantz is that you'll become an addict.” – Malcolm Gladwell“An important statement about America’s social consciousness a half-century ago, and our own today. But it is also a dual biography of the two men who dominated Boston sports at a time when the Red Sox were pitiful, the Bruins even worse and the Patriots unworthy of discussion in polite company." — David Shribman, The Wall Street Journal “A master class. Students of NBA history are in awe these days, marveling at the depth of Gary Pomerantz’s new book. . . . [Pomerantz] is a master of exquisite detail. He has produced two of the finest sports books ever written, on Wilt Chamberlain (Wilt, 1962) and the Pittsburgh Steelers’ dynasty (Their Life’s Work). For fans of the Warriors, trying to become the first team since those Celtics to reach five straight Finals, there is invaluable perspective on how a great team sustains its brilliance.” — San Francisco Chronicle  “The Last Pass surely stands as one of the most intriguing sports books in recent memory, and maybe of all time.” —Christian Science Monitor  “The Last Pass does what has become frighteningly rare in sports writing: it hypnotizes you with a great narrative.” — Mike Wilbon“An unbelievable read…A really deep dive into not only what matters most, but also the NBA as it has evolved and become more inclusive and progressive.” — Brad Stevens, head coach of the Boston Celtics“Basketball fans will want to read this exciting, affecting book, but even non-sports fans of all ages will enjoy the combination of sports, history, and biography.” — Library Journal, starred review  “In this eloquent biography…Pomerantz tells a moving story of a pivotal time in basketball history.” — Publisher’s Weekly “Pomerantz explores the complicated relationship between Russell and Cousy, both superstars but playing in a world where pervasive racism diminished the contributions of one man while elevating those of another. Cousy sees this dynamic now in a way he didn't then, and his reflections on what happened to Russell and the inadequacy of Cousy's response drive this poignant memoir, the lessons from which extend far beyond sport.” — Booklist, starred review   “Professional sports has been a powerful lens for viewing the complexity and challenges created by our nation's history of racial inequality. This fascinating read and sobering exploration of one of the most dominant teams in sports history reveals much about the hope, frustration and legacy of our continuing struggle with racial injustice.” – Bryan Stevenson, author, Just Mercy   “I was certain I knew most everything about the great Russell-Cousy Celtics dynasty – until I sat down and read The Last Pass. The gifted Gary Pomerantz masterfully unearths a mesmerizing subplot to the relationship between two complex Hall of Famers who played side-by-side during one of the most tumultuous racial climates in our country’s history. Cousy’s candor, steeped with regret over his stilted relationship with Russell, leaps off the pages. A beautifully crafted, compelling story that captures the emotions of celebrated teammates who made history together but, in the sunset of their lives, navigate their legacy alone.” – Jackie MacMullan, co-author, When The Game Was Ours   “The story of these two great athletes, Cousy and Russell, is really a story about America, about friendship, about grace. Beautifully written, prodigiously reported, and touched throughout with powerful emotion, the book is a marvel of nonfiction writing. The Last Pass ranks with the best books ever written about basketball.” – Jonathan Eig, author, Ali: A Life   “The author's reportage and research are thoroughly up to the stuff of the standard sports biography, but the narrative acquires its greatest force when, long after the events described, Cousy expresses regret that he didn't do more to support Russell: "I [ran] into literally my first angry black man….I think this simply scared me off." Nor has Russell mellowed—and nor should he. A moving, maddening look at a storied partnership that might have been a beautiful friendship as well.” — Kirkus“I’ve known Bob Cousy for almost 50 years. He’s not one for showing or telling who he is. But he showed and told Gary Pomerantz, and the result is this touching book.”  – Tom Callahan, author of Arnie: The Life of Arnold Palmer  “I can’t say I've ever encountered a book quite like this. It’s essentially the biography of one famous man consciously rethinking his relationship with another famous man, and issuing an apology. It’s also a detailed portrait of the early NBA, and the writing style is exactly what you want—clear, understated, and as efficient as the players he describes. All historical writing should aspire to this." – Chuck Klosterman, author of But What If We're Wrong?   “I've always liked a little moss to grow on the statues of legends. What did these people do? Where did they fit? How did it all come out in the end? Here are Bob Cousy and Bill Russell, basketball's version of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, caught in the twilight of their days, preserved in print by Gary Pomerantz. Wonderful. Wonderful. Wonderful.” – Leigh Montville, author of Ted Williams: The Biography of an American Hero “Basketball fans know Bob Cousy as a Hall of Famer. People who know the fight for racial equality know him as one too. In The Last Pass, Gary Pomerantz uncovers Cousy’s final testament on race in America. This book goes to the heart of the civil rights struggle. It is as thrilling as any buzzer-beating shot.”  – Juan Williams, author of Eyes on the Prize – America’s Civil Rights Years

To truly know… the history of the NBA… you must intimately know the roads traveled and the championships won by the Boston Celtics… and the Minneapolis/Los Angeles Lakers… and their shining stars… that have shown above all others. This book is about the Boston Celtics… and the original NBA showman… Bob “Da-Cooz” Cousy… and among many other things… his relationship with the greatest winner in basketball history… Bill “Big-Russ” Russell… during their playing days… and long afterward as “Da-Cooz” at ninety-years-old…now tries to come to grips with his conscience.Basketball has been involved in the major part of my entire life. When I first got hooked on playing in park leagues… it was right around the tail end of Cousy’s career… as I advanced to Junior High Leagues… then High School Leagues… then Junior College Leagues… Military Leagues… and more… it was mainly Bill Russell’s continued reign. I had a tremendous “LOVE-HATE” relationship with the Celtics. I hated them because I was a Laker fan… and it seemed every year during Cooz and/or Russ’ dominance… they beat the Lakers in the finals. But… I loved the way they played! They were…. to this day… the greatest true “team” playing “team”… I ever saw. Though I hated them I studied every one of their players intimately. I learned my “bank-shot” from Sam Jones… I learned rebounding from Russ… I learned defense from K.C… I learned to appreciate passing (though not a lot about me actual passing) and field generalship from the master “Da Cooz. I learned how to “gun” from Heinsohn… I imitated Satch Sanders shooting style… and though I was right handed… I finished each practice shooting left handed free throws like Russ. I also learned how to hate Red Auerbach lighting up his victory cigars… and yet till this day I think he was the greatest coach ever. I even read his international bestselling book on basketball fundamentals. What this book does is take you from the New York ghetto where Cousy grew up… shares in great detail his family history of a Mother who physically abused his Father… and hated Germans from her life in France… and how Da Cooz not only became a three time All-American at Holy Cross… but became one of the greatest players in NBA history. He played for the Celtics from 1950-63 and won six straight NBA titles. Before Cousy’s arrival the savior of the NBA had been big George Mikan who led the Minneapolis Lakers to multiple titles. Joining Cousy in Boston midway through Da Cooz’s career was Big Bill Russell… who continued the Celtics dominance (that in my opinion will never be matched) to eventually total ELEVEN-NBA-CHAMPIONSHIPS-IN-THIRTEEN-YEARS! Add to Russ’s stats… the fact that he won two NCAA titles with USF… and a gold medal with the United States in the Olympics… and you can see why I said he’s the winningest basketball player in history! The heart… literally the guts… the goal of this book… is Cousy attempting to come to peace with himself in his waning years… did he??? Could he??? Why didn’t he???... Do enough… if not more… to help Bill Russell cope with the terrible racism that Russell and other black teammates had to face in Boston and other areas. Complicating this issue… is the fact that… perhaps not clearly seen by the outside world… was the fact that Cooz and Russ were not close at all… off the court… yet they were… one of the greatest winning teammate combinations on it. They were a well-oiled synchronized creation of basketball victory. The author has done a ton of research recreating what it was like not only back in the day… but also Cousy’s current life with his echoing rooms in his large house… filled with the memories of his dear departed wife of over sixty-years… Missie. The parts of the story that revolve around Red Auerbach are absolutely classic… his bombastic Brooklyn street-fighting moxie… along with his psychology… and his drive to integrate basketball like never before. On top of all this… as a sports book… is that the author Gary M. Pomerantz… has such a beautiful writing style… that at times you forget it’s a sports book… and just start appreciating and absorbing the prose. As an example… the haunting book jacket cover picture of a young Cooz and Russ… taken before a big game… is described in both a lingering and illuminating narrative. If I may share one of countless phrasings that the author seems to effortlessly use to raise this book to a high standard of literature: “Let us see Cousy as he was on Boston Garden’s parquet floor, in his white home jersey set off by CELTICS 14 in Kelly green. He looked quintessentially French with his long, thin face, dark features, and deep-set eyes. For much of any game, his face was impassive. But seldom was it impassive for an entire game. In moments that mattered most, the mask came off, replaced by a game face, drawn tight for battle. He often moved with a captain’s strut and an artist’s impatience. Maybe he saw a referee miss a call. A teammate might have fumbled a pass. At those moments, Cousy could be a demanding master.”Yes… Da Cooz… and Big Russ… were quite different… except in one way… and that’s when it came to doing what it took to win! Here’s the deepest… purest insight… from teammate Tom Heinsohn:“HEINSOHN SAT BETWEEN COUSY AND RUSSELL. HE WATCHED THE TWO MEN CLOSELY AND NOTED A COMMON TRAIT. “THEY TOOK SO MUCH OUT OF THEMSELVES,” HEINSOHN SAYS. “I DIDN’T HAVE THIS DRIVE TO BE THE WORD’S GREATEST LIKE THEY DID. TO WIN AN NBA TITLE, HEINSOHN THOUGHT, THEY’D KILL THEIR MOTHERS.”A tremendously written and researched book… and you’ll even learn why the only person in the world other than Red Auerbach’s wife… who called Auerbach “Arnold” was Da Cooz!

This is a wonderful tale of basketball's greatest era, and those who made it that way: Cousy, Russell, and the Celtics. The author's main thrust is with Cousy, and the book doesn't suffer one iota for it. He goes over many individuals and aspects of the game, surpassing his work in 'Wilt: 1962.' You feel like you come to know and understand Cousy and Russell, and come to admire them as men, not just basketball legends. A must for those who enjoy basketball history.

Bob Cousy was one of the early greats of the National Basketball Association that contributed to the growth of the league through the 1950s and 1960s and his Boston Celtics led the way as the dominant team in the league. The book concentrates on Cousy and his superstar teammate Bill Russell but also contains anecdotes on other greats of the Celtic dynasty. Both Cousy and Russell contributed to the Celtics through unique means. Cousy was not universally agreed upon as the team's number one choice in the draft and Russell came to the team through a risky trade that sent Ed Macauley and Cliff Hagan to the St. Louis Hawks in exchange for the Hawks's second choice in the draft with Boston hoping that Russell would still be available for them. The book covers Cousy's family life of his parents in addition to his wife and two daughters. Bill Russell dealt with racism in Boston and really had no love for the city due to the disgusting things he had to put up withIn his later life Bob Cousy felt pangs of guilt for not speaking out in support of Bill Russell during his playing days and hoped to be able to patch things up for any omissions of support which Cousy, in his mind, felt he had neglected to do. Cousy dealt with the dementia of his wife and other teammates passing away as his own life lingered on. The difficulties that Cousy has been facing are also those faced by millions of others as age takes its toll on people.I only followed professional basketball as a fan of the St. Louis Hawks during the 1960s so I enjoyed reading about many of the famous names in the N.B.A. during that time period and found the book to be a very enjoyable read. It will have a prominent place in my library.

I figured when I purchased this book I was in for a ride down memory lane. For starters, I was 13 years old and growing up in Marion, IN, a hot-bed of high school basketball when the NBA started play. Few people I talk to realize that in the first two years of the NBA Indiana had three teams in the league. They were the Anderson Duffy Packers, the Indianapolis Olympians and the Ft. Wayne Zollner Pistons. My home town was close enough that I was able to see several of the games that featured stars that laid the groundwork for what the NBA is today. Of course, that groundwork included Bob Cousy and Bill Russell and the Boston Celtics. I was so pleased that this great book took me behind the scenes and into the personal lives of Cousy and Russell. Readers will be fascinated with exchanges between players, locker room talk, game discussions, situations with coach Red Auerbach and dozens of other items from the early years of the NBA. It was interesting to read what Cousy and Russell are doing now in the twi-light of their lives. If you love reading about how the NBA got started and the great players, especially those on the Celtics, you will be enthralled with this book. For example, Cousy mentions the effect of the 24 second shot clock that saved pro basketball. This took place in 1954, my senior year in high school. I can recall when games first appeared on TV. All in all, The Last Pass was a trip down memory lane for me as I was lucky to see so much of the development of the NBA of which Cousy and Russell were so much a big part. I would recommend this book to any basketball fan interested in knowing more about Cousy, Russell, the Celtics and the early developmental years of the NBA.Norman Jones, Ed. Review

“Alex Honnold spends his life cheating death.” - New York Times Magazine“Honnold here recounts his ascents on some of the world's most dangerous rock walls. You'll come away questioning his sanity for choosing this controversial sport…but it's also impossible not to feel awe.” - People“Honnold blows wide open any conventional understanding of the term 'comfort zone.'…He engagingly conveys his love of climbing.” - Barbara J. King, NPR“[Honnold] is the foremost practitioner of the dark art of free solo rock climbing―ascending extremely difficult cliffs hundreds, sometimes thousands, of feet tall without ropes or protection hardware of any kind. That is every bit as stupefying as it sounds.” - Wall Street Journal“Alone on the Wall is set to inspire multitudes [of climbers]. With his off-the-charts abilities and laconic, whip-smart, no-B.S. persona, Honnold has made climbing cool.” - Men's Health“[Honnold's] ability to connect with a larger audience and bring a humble perspective to his many accomplishments makes him a great ambassador to the sport…[R]eading the vivid descriptions captured by Honnold and Roberts will surely cover the book's pages in a fine layer of palm sweat.” - Gripped Magazine

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys sports/adventure biography. First of all, the format of the book is easy to follow with two narratives, one of Alex and one of the co-author, D. Robert. At first, I wondered why Alex chose this format as he already writes decently. Then, I realized this format provided a third person perspective for the readers to appreciate the gravity of some of the accomplishment. Alex's choice of co-author definitely was superb - I have read several D. Robert's books, always enjoyed them. Secondly, aside from the obvious (but still thrilling) climbing accomplishment/adventure, Alex's sense of humor really came through. The book was very entertaining to read! Finally, I think anyone who appreciates athleticism/adventure, climber or not (I have climbed but am not an avid climber), will enjoy this book for a lot of the "lessons" are universal. A side note, I really appreciate Alex's downplaying on those "lessons" - he doesn't overstate them, but really just tells a story and lets the readers decipher whatever apply to them. It is not "preachy", even though it still inspires the audience.

I became interested in Alex Honnold after the 60 minutes story. I never forgot his name, and just got around to ordering this book for my Kindle during an extended medical leave due to surgery . I thoroughly enjoyed his descriptions of the many "rocks" he's climbed. Having never been a climber myself, I was afraid it would be too technical to hold my interest. I couldn't have been more wrong. I was fascinated by his explaining how and why he's chosen to do this with his life. I also enjoyed reading about his various climbing partners and their adventures. I wish I had heard of him before our family visited Yosemite in 2011, as I would have heeded the park stranger's invitation to spend some time in El Cap meadow with a pair of binoculars to watch the climbers.

Very well written and well balanced book, between narrative and Alex's own writing. Incredible stories that will live on forever. I love the lack of ego in this book. Not many people in this world seem to appreciate the world the way Alex does. Everything is just very honest. This is a must read for climbers and non-climbers. It is about being a good person and loving what you do. Although not everyone can have the luxury to live in a van and climb in world's most beautiful rocks, we can take part in paying Mother Nature some extra appreciation and finding a side kick of something we love aside from our jobs.Glad to have people like Alex in the world everyone to look to for inspiration. Good people are awesome.

In my youth I climbed the route Alex went up in 3 days of the hardest climbing I had ever climbed.I spent the whole book nervously reading, it’s been 25 years since I have been in the route but still remember those cruxes. The achievements Alex has made in his career are incredible. To the non-climbers the choices on routes Alex chooses to solo may seem crazy, to those of us who have climbed seriously know how insanely bold those decisions are. The only place I have ever experienced complete concentration with no outside influences was leading a pitch. I could relate to Alex’s descriptions and emotional battles. He is in a class of his own, I hope to never open a paper to find out we have lost this person.

I was surprised after reading Alone On The Wall to discover that David Roberts is a climber, because when I was reading this book, it really seemed like he didn't "get it". It didn't seem like Roberts really understood or was on board with what Honnold was and is doing--his lifestyle, his climbing, and yes, his free soloing. Maybe it was because he didn't insert his own opinion into things--a lot of Roberts' writing is just summarizing interviews with other people. But there's a ton of people out there who either don't climb or climb more conservatively who have opinions about Honnold, and if I wanted to hear that, I'd read any of the hundreds of articles about Honnold on the internet. This book was a chance to hear from Honnold and find out what he thinks, and instead Roberts' writing is about what everyone else thinks--I just don't care about that. For the parts of the book which were actually written by Honnold--a lot of what he wrote is just responding to what other people say, which yields some insights, but I'd much rather have read what Honnold wanted to say. The problem here maybe is that Honnold doesn't want to say anything--he'd rather be out climbing. Which is great--that's how he became the climber who inspires me. But it doesn't make for a great book.I'll also point out that this book was published two years ago as of this review, and was probably mostly written in the year before that. In that time, I've seen Honnold mature a lot--his interviews on TV and podcasts show a person who has had a lot of emotional and mental growth over the last few years. The Honnold who wrote passages in Alone On The Wall is not the Honnold we know today--the one who wrote this is a bit immature, a bit distracted. I get the feeling that Honnold was pressured to write this book a bit before he was really ready to be writing a book--it's a bit weird to write your story before it's over. I really hope this isn't the last book we see from Honnold, because I think if he were to write a book now or later in his life, it would be a lot better.Contrast this with The Push by Tommy Caldwell. There's a book written by an older climber who knew what he wanted to write. At the surface level, it turns out to be a book that's much less about climbing, but it's far more vulnerable and insightful, and gives readers a much better understanding of what motivated Caldwell to become one of the best climbers in the world.

Was absolutely captivated. Especially by the first 3 or 4 chapters which explain the Video shoots of Alex free-solo climbing and how he became a modern legend. Very interesting as he explains what he's thinking and his mental preparation for free soloing. Also how he approaches his climbs and general outlook on life and risk-taking. If you watch his videos on YouTube, you'll buy and read the book. What he can do on the face of sheer mountain faces is unbelievable and has to be seen to be believed.

i hated this book. i have no idea why people praise it so much. i decided to read it because i saw it ranked highly in entertainment magazine. i really tried to like it. i really did.the big problem: i cant tell the two characters apart. the story is from the perspective of two boys who fall in love, but i could never know who is who. like “is this the kid with the ex boyfriend or the kid with the job internship or what?” i never knew. because of this, i never connected to either of the boys. if they died i literally wouldnt be sad. i felt no connection to them.also, arthur (one of the two main characters) is a toxic and jealous person. pretty much all the cheap drama in the story is about how he’s jealous of bens exboyfriend and he’s having himself little pity parties. and ben is always like “sorry” and theres no reason to be sorry hes just feeding arthurs toxic nature.also, the book is sporting so many pop culture references that it feels like theyre shoving it down our throats. maybe i’m just a little biased because i despise musicals and that is much of what ben and arthur obsess about, but they repeatedly mention multiple pop culture things and it gets insanely cringey.the book also moves too slow. it took 200 pages for ben and arthur to start dating. TWO HUNDRED!! THATS HALF THE BOOK!! also, the ending was dragged out and i kept expecting to turn the page and see the acknowledgements but it just kept going, just kept stabbing me again and again.i tried to enjoy this book. i really, really did. i read the whole thing despite being bored the whole time. i actually hoped someone would die so it would get interesting. i wish i had never decided to read it. a lot of people seem to enjoy it, so maybe you will too, but heed this warning. its a terrible book.

“I don’t know if we’re a love story or a story about love.”Right up front: this book brought tears to my eyes at the end. It channeled all the trauma of being a teenager, as well as the joy of coming out at last. The story of Ben and Arthur should be entirely different from my own story – they could practically be my grandchildren. But no, it resonated deeply in me, both as a gay man, and a father.I am intensely cynical when I approach young adult novels from mainstream publishers, particularly when they have gay content. Why? Not sure, but I think it’s because so many mainstream publishers ignore so much great LGBT content, I automatically wonder “why this book?” Is it because it’s safe, acceptable, within received norms as to how much gay is ok?Being a gay teenager in high school in the very early seventies was awful. Nobody was out. Everyone was afraid. My own experience was not technically that bad, but in retrospect, I was as confused and frightened and isolated as any closeted gay teen at the time. The closet was the default for all of us. Of course, I didn’t have books like this back then. I had The Boys in the Band.Albertalli and Silvera create a lovely rhythm with the structure of this book, alternating between the viewpoints of Puerto Rican Ben from Manhattan and Jewish Arthur from ex-urban Atlanta. These seventeen-year-olds are fully fleshed-out, richly dimensional. They observe the world around them closely, and they respond to it. Most importantly of all, they have parents they love (in that eye-rolling teenaged way) and friends who matter hugely in their lives. We see through these boys’ eyes, and we see a lot.The futility of high-school romances is sort of at the center of this book, but I think that’s a bit of a red herring. The interplay between Ben’s wounded cynicism and Arthur’s starry-eyed romanticism is critical to their relationship with each other, but it’s also essential in their relationship to their friends – Jessie and Ethan for Arthur, and the more complex quartet of Dylan, Harriet, Hudson and Samantha for Ben. All these young people need each other but are groping forward in their hormone-infused teen lives to figure out how the different kinds of love – love of family, love of friends, romantic love – are going to be part of them. It is confusing and aggravating and frightening. Which, as I remember if I think very hard on my own high-school years, is exactly right.I want to say that there’s no “happy ending” for this book, but in fact there is: it’s just not the kind of happy ending we as a culture are primed to see in a romantic story. I will give no detail, but suffice it to say that as I ended this book, blinking away tears, I felt hopeful and comforted. Maturity is something I wasn’t looking for in these pages, and its discovery therein was an unexpected gift.

I have a love/ hate relationship with Albertalli. I really liked Simon VS The Homo Sapiens Agenda and The Upside of Unrequited with their adorable characters and charming/ hilarious/ sometimes heartbreaking plots. I soared through these books and would recommend them to anyone- especially John Green fans. Then there was Leah On the Off Beat, which mostly angered me. I didn’t like her, or the way she acted toward her friends, how the love interest played itself out…. the book just pissed me off most of the time, with just barely enough good to keep me moving forward. What If It’s Us Brings out the best of this author- maybe due to the collab? The characters are purely magical even as they are each incredibly messy and neurotic in their own ways. I think it’s their imperfections that made them so fabulous. The premise was fantastic, the play between characters was perfect, and you saw a lot of character growth which is always a plus for me. My favorite character was definitely Dylan, the over the top best friend. I felt like he was the perfect foil for Ben. For me, this was the best book of the author’s to date. I loved it! My only objection, and it’s purely personal, I felt like the ending was too open. I want closure! And I want it to be EPIC. Still, five stars all the way. On the adult content scale, there’s some language, drinking, sexual innuendo and light sexual content. It’s not too crazy, and I would still give this one to a youngish teen. I give it a three.

Buy it. The emotional roller coaster it takes you on is the best ive ever been blessed to read! After finishing all 433 pages in approximately 8 hours, i have to say it has easily replaced another book as my all time favorite.
