Stop Endometriosis and Pelvic Pain: What Every Woman and Her Doctor Need to Know, by Andrew S. Cook MD FACOG

Review

“Thank you Dr. Cook for writing a book that not only explains the complexities of endometriosis from the perspective of a long-time expert in the field, but also clearly captures the experience of what it is like to suffer from endometriosis. Women should not have to suffer in isolation and silence. They should demand—and get—correct diagnoses and proper effective treatment, not mistreatment and unnecessary invasive procedures. This book is a most welcome source of hope for women to break open the taboos about discussing endometriosis and get the medical community to recognize their obligation to rethink how this disease is treated.” —Susan Sarandon, actress“Stop Endometriosis and Pelvic Pain is the single most accurate and helpful guide available for dealing effectively with this common problem. Bravo, Dr. Cook!” —Christiane Northrup MD, ob/gyn physician and author of the New York Times bestsellers: Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom and The Wisdom of Menopause“Endometriosis is a complex disease that requires a multidimensional management approach from knowledgeable professionals who are committed to their patients. Andrew Cook is just such a physician and surgeon whose book provides expert and comprehensive advice that will benefit many patients.”— G. David Adamson MD, FRCSC, FACOG, FACS, Director of Fertility Physicians of Northern California, Adjunct Clinical Professor at Stanford University, Clinical Associate Professor at the University of California San Francisco“This book is the long-awaited blessing for the millions of women who faced limited options in dealing with endometriosis and pelvic pain. It will no doubt become the most authoritative text offering a comprehensive, integrative approach to these issues for clinician and patient alike. Dr. Cook provides the answers we have been waiting for.” —David Perlmutter MD, FACN, ABIHM, author of Power Up Your Brain, The Neuroscience of Enlightenment“The book is amazingly compassionate and validating for women with endometriosis! There are sections of it that totally resonate with the experience of endometriosis.” — Mary Lou Ballweg, president and executive director of the Endometriosis Association, Milwaukee, Wisconsin“In Stop Endometriosis and Pelvic Pain, Dr. Andrew Cook shows exactly why so many women are improperly treated and left to suffer and why his rate of success is so high. Dr. Cook has the knowledge, curiosity, and determination required to truly resolve a complicated and debilitating disease.” —Joseph Keon, PhD and author of Whitewash

If I could give this book 10 stars I would!!! This book has FOREVER changed my life!! This is the only review I have EVER written on Amazon! (I'm on here daily...lol) If you have or know a loved one who has endometriosis or pelvic pain you must buy this book NOW! Don't wait! Worth ever penny and then some!! I bought two. One for myself and one for my family members to read. Both my mother and I have read this book so far and agree on this! Dr. Cook explains things in a way that no other Ob ever told me! He made me realize I'm not crazy, my pain IS real and there IS something I can do about it! When all my other Ob's would tell me "this is just your new norm with this disease, there is nothing else we can do." I finally got to a point of things being so bad (before finding and reading the book) where I couldn't just keep believing this is "normal." I became determined to get answers and act as my own advocate. Which lead to seeing a lot of Dr.s, doing even more research and finally finding this book! Thank God!! Dr. Cook is so spot on about everything and explained it in a way that was easy to understand. He has spent his life helping women with this disease and pelvic pain. I remember thinking to myself after reading the first few pages "this is the type of Dr. I need to help me, he knows his stuff" after fully reading the book I knew I had to meet him! Luckily I'm close enough to his facility to not have to fly to see him. I have had the pleasure to meet Dr. Cook in person now. He is the first OB that was truly compassionate, sincere, understanding, and really knew his stuff about Endo. To no surprise because he has spent his life studying and specializing in Endo! He isn't cheap but I can already tell he is worth every penny I will pay to have him be my Dr. I'm so fortunate to have found this book and him, I just wish more women knew about about both! Please do yourself a favor and READ THIS BOOK!!!P.s. For the 2 star reviews talking about not liking the only option being surgery for you to obtain your quality of life back, you are only continuing to compromise your quality of life from this disease until you remove the problem!!!! It will only get worse with time. I know this first hand after only having one surgery to remove it when I was 17. I have been living with this disease for 10+years now because no other Ob felt I needed surgery again and try other options. I tried EVERYTHING!! The only relief I got from this disease is the three years after my first surgery! Now things are so bad I am vomiting everyday, even with meds to stop me from doing so!! Don't wait like I did! Don't accept that your pain is "normal"! Be proactive and your own advocate! Don't stop until you find a Dr. that truly cares and wants to help you!! It will truly make the world of difference!

Firstly, I have to say that the index in this book is completely useless. There's no rhyme or rhythm to it. He just takes random word scramble and makes it into an index. And the words that are actually important, you can't find. Like "fertility" for example. I've never seen anything that odd.. And in general, the book is good, but I feel like it definitely favors more surgical aspect of treating endo, since Dr. Cook is a surgeon, that's mostly all he focuses on. You take away from the book that surgery is basically your best solution, and it makes endo seem more lighthearted than the disease actually is. I get that he's trying to give hope to all women, but I think the fertility aspect at least, is a bit more difficult than he makes it sound.

If you have suffered from endometriosis this book is a must read! I cried almost the entire time I read this because I finally felt that someone was able to explain and articulate my pain better than even I could. This book is a relief and consolation that 1. there is someone out there who actually understands the misery this condition brings and 2. something can be done ( you don't have to live with this the rest of your life). I have lived with this from the time I was about 16. Fast forward to being 37 and having had surgery about 2 1/2 years ago only to have all the pain and debilitating fatigue and everything else that comes with this condition come back again. It has been not only physically devastating but psychologically and emotionally devastating as well. I had all but given up and then I read Dr. Cook's book. I have no doubt I must have surgery again but this book educated me as what to look for in a surgeon and how the procedure must be done. Buy it for you and your loved ones to help them understand.

I have dealt with Endo, infertility and Interstitial Cystitis for many years. It was undiagnosed until I found my current Dr. I have an excellent Dr/Surgeon for my Endo. However, I learned so much more from this book! Dr. Cook does an exemplary job of describing what having Endo does to a woman. How it effects her entire life. I have tried explaining it to my husband, family and friends but have never been able to do it justice. I am going to ask my husband to read this book and I will recommend it to my family.Dr. Cook clearly explains all of the facets of Endometriosis. From treatment plans, different types of surgeries, removal of Endo, and everything in between; Dr. Cook covers it all! It's an easy read but at the same time he doesn't dumb things down either. I was relieved to see my Dr. is on the same page on all aspects. However, Dr. Cook explained things that my Dr. assumed I knew. Sometimes I feel like my Dr. is talking about something I should already know and I often lack the courage to keep asking questions. On the other hand, because my appointments seem to take a long time to go over all of my issues, I would often refrain from asking questions out of respect for his time. After reading this book I feel more educated and empowered.I have a 5 year old daughter. I absolutely dread the idea of her having to go through any of this. My greatest hope is that Dr. Cook's idea of Endometriosis being its own specialized field (e.g. Cardology) comes to fruition. This would mean my daughter would have several physicians to choose from, instead of trying to find a needle in a haystack of Endo-illiterate physicians.Thank you, Dr. Cook!

There are so many awesome things about this RPG that I can barely contain my enthusiasm! But I really can't.1. The instructions for playing are clear and informative. The book also makes it very clear that the adventures require some sort of familiarity with the book and with the scenarios. It's not a book one can just pick up and play. However it's not something that requires a degree in rocket science in order to play.2. This game runs on the D100 system, which was an odd duck to learn. I have been playing D&D for about two years, and the transition between playing D20 to D100 was confusing for me. I can't speak for everybody on that though. Some people will pick it up faster than I.3. The book contains a very informative section on the mythos of Lovecraft, a detailed glossary of Old Ones, Monsters, Enemies, differences between the eras (1890's, 1920's, and Modern), and an incredibly detailed section defining each trait.4. This book contains 4 scenarios in the back, each with their various levels of difficulty and various levels of how well they're written. The only one I've had a problem with is Dead Man's Stomp, which contains an unruly amount of flavor-text for my tastes.5. If you're an experienced D&D player looking into this game, please take into consideration that "looting the room" is far less necessary than interrogations or library checks.Overall, this game is an awesome and refreshing game to DM and to play. Having knowledge in Lovecraftian mythos is not required, as you learn a LOT along the way!

A well done book, in my opinion. I had to finally upgrade, since the last edition any of us had was 3rd edition, and it has changed a lot since then. :) My only disappointment was that on the character sheet in the back, there are a couple of lines that are messed up and aren't in the correct columns. They have ended up mashed right up against the previous column while the rest of the column stayed where it belongs and it looks goofy, and it bugs me. I like my character sheet to look perfect...lol...you can work around that though, Chaosium has free character sheet downloads in PDF that are correct (I believe I had to get a 5th edition sheet to get a correctly printed one, but the one I got looks the same, just without the mistakes) and it is easier to print from those than to photocopy or scan one out of a book anyway. The printing mistakes are the only reason I dropped it to 4 stars instead of 5, otherwise I am very happy with the book.

The first RPG I ran was Call of Cthulhu, with the first edition, in 1981. Horror, especially weird horror, appealed to me as nothing else did, and Call of Cthulhu, with its 1920's setting, unfathomable, Lovecraftian monsters, and easy to learn rules fit the bill immediately. Using Chaosium's now veteran Basic Role Playing (BRP) rules engine, most players get the rhythm of the game in a single play session. And, inspiring horror games right up to the present day, there are the famous Sanity rules, which allow you to simulate the jaw-dropping terror that the characters in the game experience. If you like horror and you like weird, you HAVE to try this pencil and paper classic.

If you want fancy books, this isn't it. In fact, this isn't as nicely done as prior additions. BUT...As a game, CofC is even more attractive to me than ever. With the d20 system taken over by endless amounts of crap, a simple, easy to play, easy to understand, very straightforward system that LETS YOU ROLE PLAY and develop a story is very welcome. The updated version does actually very little other than tweak a few bits and add a bit more source material, so you dont need to feel like you have to buy this if you have a prior edition. If you want a dice fest and super heroes in chain mail, play d20, if you want stories, characters, and fun, play CofC. The horror element doesn't even need to come into play!Monty Haul players, and folks who want to obsess "with what they can get" won't like this. People that want "a plan" for character development won't like it. That said, nearly every one I've ever played this with loves the game... but be warned, you're GMing skills will be put to the test because there is very little system to hide behind.

In the venue of Role Playing Games(RPG), Call of Cthulhu(CoC); is one of the "big three". The other two being Dungeons & Dragons(D&D) and Traveller. Where D&D is sword and sorcery, Traveller is Sci-Fi; and CoC is horror. All three were born in the early 1980's, and are giants; in the history of the "Table-Top-Games".CoC thrusts the player into the Lovecraft Horror Universe of the 1920's. Where investigators(players) are pitted against "things" beyond understanding. Many loose their minds, while others loose their lives; not a game for "deep" character investment. But a brilliant game concept that has gathered players for more than thirty years.

This game is great because it makes you feel like a weak human investigator uncovering plots that go way over your head and cults and other dimensional creatures you couldn't hope to fight. Take everything you know about role playing and forget it; this is a new brand of game, and it makes for some awesome adventures. My only regret is that it's paperback and can wear easily as a result. Book itself is really nice, I love the percentile roll system and the skill learning system (you don't level up, but as you use skills successfully you become better with them at a progressively slower rate) great game!

but unfortunately everyone that agreed to play it backed out after I bought it and chose another game. So I can't say much as to actual game play but I can say it has a nice easy layout and I REALLY like the leveling system that it has. Also there are "classes" to choose from but also rules to create your own completely so seems that any player could be satisfied. On paper it looks like it could easily be my favorite rpg...unfortunately I've never been able to really play it. If you like a dark creepy game, that can have either a 20s noir feel or a Victorian feel..check it out. haven't found anything that looks better.

Absolutely delightful, thought-provoking, educational and full of good humor. A new angle on mindfulness.

How Proust Can Change Your Life is a pleasure to read and to ponder. Its observations, though hardly original, seem especially worthwhile at a time when tweets pass for conversation and Facebook postings are a way to stay in touch with friends. Proust and his disciple Alain de Botton advise us to slow down; to take time not only to smell the coffee but savor a croissant or two along with it each morning as you languorously pore over your daily newspaper. Rather than looking for Mr. Right, become him--and start by listening to others rather than nattering endlessly about yourself. Note the beauty in the every day, and acknowledge the irony that one is never more alive or aware of life as when one's own health is threatened by illness. These are but a few of the bon mots found in Proust Can Change Your Life--a delightful literary "self-help" that really is helpful. If not ground-shakingly original, they are life-shakingly worthwhile. In addition to all of the above How Proust Can Change Your Life ponders how great literature can impact our lives and how real creativity is a way of seeing and feeling an experience more deeply and more profoundly than most. Very worthwhile--the sort of book I'm sure I will be returning to.

I have read several titles by this particular author and have NEVER been disappointed. I studied for a PhD in literature and psychology in my youth. This sort of analysis of Proust is a gem for modern life -- and a guide to appreciating Proust's world as well. Many of Proust's eccentric habits were doubtless "self-inflicted" but the reader will confront how complicated the requirements of his society were at the time. My first exposure was "On the Art of Travel." This is NOT a "Rick Steves" sort of volume with suggestions of places to visit and how to spend less money doing it. It is a first class analysis of what makes us WANT to travel and of what rewards our psyches achieve from it.Whether you beg, borrow or buy, this author will be a consistently valuable addition to your lifetime reading list.

Good enough to have read it 6 times and still not get all of it. I was taken by surprise at Proust's significance in history and myth -- beyond being a Monty Python joke. What is the name of the phenomenon wherein a person sees himself in an old painting? I will never look at a madelaine the same again. Thank you, Alain.

Its a great little book that gives one some perspective on the overall ideas of Proust. I found myself applying to life. I loved the idea of seeing other people you know inside faces and people in art / movies etc. Sometimes when you go to a gallery that has hundreds of portraits or saints etc. it can get a bit dry. Although it really does feel nice to see an old relatives likeness in something and then sit down ponder the idea and feel fresh when walking into the next room.

I would consider Alain De Botton one of the great modern philosophers of our time. The word philosopher might make you cringe, and I get it, but go listen to his interview on the Tim Ferris podcast. It will help in understanding his perspective on how a philosopher should function in the modern day. He also guides listeners to How Proust Can Change your Life as a good entry point into his work, what he believes in, and a book that he feels has held up since its release. I took the nod, and I’m happy I did.De Botton writes with clarity, concision, and wit. He turns the subject matter, Marcel Proust, and his book In Search of Lost Time, into a thoroughly enjoyable unconventional self-help manual. I say unconventional, but I can only hope the questions you ask yourself after reading this book become conventional in all sorts of ways.I try to imagine selling someone this book. For me, De Botton had me at the chapter titles. Just to name a few: How To Love Life Today, How To Take Your Time, How To Suffer Successfully, How To Be A Good Freind. Compelling questions to think about, and you’ll be surprised to find how Marcel Proust and his masterpiece In Search Of Lost Time provide a point of view on each.Paradoxically the book concludes with a chapter titled How To Put a Book Down. Simple advice but the message speaks to a much large theme that we all could benefit from. That Beneath every piece of art there is an author with a point of view on the world and the greatest homage we can pay to each is to see our world, for a short time, through their eyes. After that short time, it’s ok to admit that for all the beautiful qualities we might see in each genius work it might eventually prove to be silly, maniacal, false, or just wrong. And as you learn to embrace this indifference you’ll really start to see how Proust can change your life.

This book is a gem. Full of dry wit, the author imparts much wisdom with Proust's life as the backdrop. This book will be added to my shelf of favorites.

I’m a Proustian devotée and this book does not capture the true genius of Proust. It slogs along pragmatically completely missing Proust’s beauty of style.

Review

Title: Tropicalia: Lee County author, curator write about Cape CoralAuthor: Amy Bennett WilliamsPublisher: News-PressDate: 11/15/09Forget the snarky nickname (Cape Coma), the jeering dismissals (home of the newly wed and nearly dead) - even the so-called common knowledge (it's a town without a history). The fact of the matter is, Cape Coral has a rich and quirky past, something Chris Wadsworth and Anne Cull, curator of the Cape Coral Historical Museum, were reminded of over and over as they put together the new book: "Images of America: Cape Coral."The 128-page book is full of images of the city's history, from shots of barefoot early settlers to swinging '60s publicity stills of big names like Bob Hope and Phyllis Diller celebrating the Cape's charms."It truly was a very exciting place," says Wadsworth, a freelance writer who also writes a media column for The News-Press. "To promote it, they had so much going on - beauty pageants, golf tournaments, celebrity appearances - anything to get them a mention in a Northern paper. So there was always something happening and it was because of that excitement that people bought property there."The book has generated some decidedly contemporary excitement of its own: It has a page on Facebook with more than 500 fans and old-timers contributing their own recollections and photos. For example, here's what Debbie Cooke wrote: "My husband's grandfather (Seth Daniels) and his brothers owned this land and it was called the Matlacha Cattle Company. It was a working ranch for years. ... brimming with deer, turkey and wild hogs. I can't remember what year they sold it. ... it was a beautiful place to see, huge oaks and pines (and) lots of rattlesnakes too! Pappy brought in a barge full of wild hogs to kill the snakes. ... There were places to sleep the men and a big Ranch House. ... Big Mama drove a wagon with a top on it to follow them with food and water and other supplies."It was truly a part of history forgotten by most. "But thanks to Wadsworth, Cull and their fans, Cape Coral's vivid past is still close at hand.Title: New history book records rapid growth of Cape Coral Author: Chris Wadsworth Pubisher: Florida WeeklyDate: 10/21/09Cape Coral is such a new community -- developed by the famous Rosen Brothers in the late 1950s and early 1960s -- that few realize its rich history dating all the way back to the 19th century. This oversight could change for many Southwest Floridians thanks to the release of a new history book written by local author Chris Wadsworth and Ann Cull, the curator of the Cape Coral Historical Museum.Titled "Images of America: Cape Coral," the paperback book features more than 200 historical photographs from the early years on the Cape. The authors trace the community's development -- from the years as a cattle farming wilderness at the turn of the century to the arrival of the Rosens, the rapid rise of neighborhoods and the city's incorporation in 1970."Some of my friends laughed when I told them I was writing a history book on Cape Coral. They thought the Cape didn't have much of a history," Mr. Wadsworth says. "However, I got the last laugh. Cape Coral has a fantastic history, one that is really unique in the United States."Another bonus for the authors was the rich archives kept by the Cape Coral Historical Museum. A century ago, many people didn't appreciate historic preservation. Photos weren't regularly taken of buildings and parks in a town and most old photos and newspapers were thrown away.On the other hand, Cape Coral is so new that by the 1960s, people were recognizing that history was unfolding in front of them as the city developed. To this end, thousands of old photographs, newspapers, marketing brochures and city incorporation papers were saved."It was really an embarrassment of riches," Mr. Wadsworth said. "We had thousands of images to consider and we were able to pick the very best to go in the book."To help market the book, Mr. Wadsworth created a Facebook page for the book, which now has more than 400 fans and is still growing. Many early residents of Cape Coral have joined the page and are reconnecting and sharing their own photos and stories from the Cape's formative years."Images of America: Cape Coral" is the latest in a large series of history books released by Arcadia Publishing of Mount Pleasant, S.C. The company has more than 5,000 titles covering many large cities and small towns across the country. The authors of the Cape Coral book feel their work is like a family album -- one filled with nostalgic photographs and great stories of a time gone by."It's wonderful how these Arcadia books allow us to capture these moments in time -- these early residents and their priceless memories -- and share them with a wider audience," Ms. Cull says. ?"Images of America: Cape Coral" is available at the Cape Coral Historical Museum, 544 Cultural Park Blvd. in Cape Coral, 772- 7037. The proceeds from books purchased there support the museum. The book is also available at local bookstores such as Barnes & Noble and Waldenbooks, as well as at online bookstores."Images of America: Cape Coral" will be for sale and author Chris Wadsworth will sign copies and chat with guests about the history of Cape Coral at an upcoming event at the Cape Dog & Deli. The book signing is set for noon to 1:30 p.m. Monday Oct. 26, at Cape Dog & Deli, 1227 Cape Coral Parkway East in Big John's Plaza. They knew instinctively it had to be the cover of "Images of America: Cape Coral," their book on the history of the city. The 1962 cover photo features three locals taking a drive through the Gulf in one of the "Amphibicars" Cape Coral developer Gulf American Land Corporation reportedly purchased to help promote the city in the '50s.Wadsworth spent about six months conducting research at the Cape Coral Historical Museum and worked with Curator Anne Cull to gather information for the book, which was released this month by Arcadia Publishing. His work helped him realized just how hard Jack and Leonard Rosen pushed the glamorous image they created for Cape Coral."It was all about the gimmicks," said Wadsworth, a freelance writer who contributes to several local publications, including The News-Press. "They had celebrities come down, they did beauty pageants, they hosted golf tournaments ... anything they could do to get the word out and make people go 'Oh, Cape Coral? Where's that?'" The Rosen brothers used celebrities and bought late-night TV airtime to promote their hair care products in the '50s -- a method some say made them, essentially, the inventors of infomercials. So when it came time to market Cape Coral, they employed the same strategy, bringing stars such as Bob Hope, Hugh Downs and Anita Bryant to town to draw press coverage. Cull and Wadsworth's 128-page book -- which Wadsworth said is more like a historical family photo album for the Cape rather than an exhaustive, text-heavy history -- is filled with 207 photos, plus historical information and stories recounted from locals. Writing the book allowed Wadsworth -- who spends his free time reading and watching The History Channel -- to combine his journalistic research skills with his love of history. And because he spent so much time researching Cape Coral's past, Wadsworth revels in his newfound knowledge as he passes historical sites when he drives down Cape Coral Parkway or Del Prado Boulevard. "The old misnomer that Cape Coral doesn't have a history -- it's just not true," Wadsworth said, adding that the city is unique because it was strategically planned and didn't grow organically, the way many towns do."When you compare it to a lot of cities in the United States, Cape Coral's history is really different," he said. Wadsworth also wrote "Images of America: Bonita Springs," which was released in January.Title: Tyler Postcard History Book Signing At Queen's TeaAuthor: Staff WriterPublisher: Tyler PaperDate: 10/2/09Robert Reed, author of last year's photographic history book Images of America: Tyler, recently completed a second work with Arcadia Publishing titled Postcard History: Tyler. I've lived in Cape Coral for 11years, and it was very interesting to learn the history of it. The pictures are great, although I wish they'd preserved a lot of the actual places in the photos.:(

We are newer residents to Florida. We really enjoyed all the old pictures from the area. Definitely a book to have on your coffee table and share with friends, a conversation piece!

Initially, I was alittle disappointed with how thin and small the book was, however seeing the city develop through the pictures in this book and learning more about the city I lived in for 20+ years was quite refreshing. If you're looking for a written history of Cape Coral then look elsewhere since about 98% of this book is pictures. The majority of the pictures in the book are from the 50's-60's. The only thing I'd change about this book is more pictures of Cape Coral through the 70's-present.

A wonderful visual record of early Cape Coral. A truly wonderful, family oriented city.

Having lived in Cape Coral for about 16 years now I found this book very fascinating. You get to see pictures of the very first development and read the stories of what happened.

Rural Studio: Samuel Mockbee and an Architecture of Decency

From Publishers Weekly

The genius of an architect who made beautiful and functional homes out of inexpensive materials is celebrated in Rural Studio: Samuel Mockbee and an Architecture of Decency. The book showcases work Mockbee (1944-2002) undertook in Hale County, Ala., where he recruited architecture students to help design and build free homes for impoverished residents. Andrea Oppenheimer Dean, a former executive editor at Architecture magazine, and photographer Timothy Hursley, an architectural photographer who has been documenting Rural Studio for nine years, present 132 color and 12 b&w photos of the warm, modern homes (which often incorporate recycled and natural materials like tires and hay bales) and discuss them with Mockbee, his students and the home owners. The work has been featured on Oprah, Nightline, CBS News and in Time and People. Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal

This book is a revelation. It displays, for the first time in book form, the accomplishments of one of the most celebrated architectural studios in America, the Rural Studio, led by Samuel Mockbee of the Auburn University School of Architecture. Mockbee ran this studio for ten years until his tragic death from leukemia last year at the age of 57, a year after winning a MacArthur genius award. His students and associates created some of the most interesting and innovative architecture in the United States by serving the humblest needs of some of the poorest people in the most neglected counties of Alabama and Mississippi. About a dozen houses, churches, playgrounds, pavilions, and community centers are represented here in elegant photographs by Hursley, the unofficial photographer of the studio, and in concentrated prose by Dean, a former executive editor of Architecture magazine. The book includes descriptions of each project, interviews with students and clients, instructive essays on key topics, and a complete bibliography of the Rural Studio. Recommended to studio art as well as architecture programs. Peter Kaufman, Boston Architectural Ctr. Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

This book is written in such a way that anyone can read and understand the purpose behind the development of Rural Studio. Auburn University was well known nationally before two professors, initially Samuel Mockbee being the one to have the insight for the program, and then fellow Auburn professor D.K. Ruth, developed this awesome program that put Auburn University's College of Architecture on the map internationally. These men had a vision to not only be able to give to a very impoverished area of Alabama much needed facilities, but to also allow students the unique opportunity to be able to actually design and do all the building themselves of what they designed in this area of Alabama, about 50 miles northwest of Selma, Alabama. I am quite partial to this book (and the recent one written in 2014 regarding the programs's 20th anniversary), due to having a daughter who spent a full semester her sophomore year and then many weekends during the following summer of 2009 designing and completing the building of an unbelievable home for a very fortunate family. In the process, my daughter learned to do everything from laying hardwood floors to bricking to installing electricity and plumbing to building a roof, and much much more. She then was quite fortunate to be chosen to do her thesis project at Rural Studio, as being selected to be able to do the fifth year thesis project at Rural Studio is quite an honor. She and three young men from her class are in process of putting final touches on a 5100+ square foot Boys and Girls Club for West Alabama, in particular for the town of Greensboro, Alabams. The book does a fabulous job of showing the beginning of the Rural Studio program with Mockbee's dream so well described and what students accomplished during this time. I defintely give the book 5 stars and would give it more if I could. A super book for the coffee table to share so others will be aware of such an unique program!

Its honest to the bone. Good architecture, good pictures, and simply good social efforts. Thats the whole book. Showing with honesty and integrity the efforts made by everyone in the rural studio. It doesn't have floor plans (im guessing there is a point in all these designs that somethings cant by put down in paper and other you just have to adjust) but the rest is perfect. Very honest, showing the people (the whole point of architecture) and the initial situation and the final product.Love the book, very inspiring.

Exciting book for anyone, especially the architect that wants to give back to society. As an architecture student, each reading of this book reminds me why I got into architecture. Architecture is a loving and sensual profession, especially when used the way the Rural Studio has.

This is a beautiful, intriguing, and inspiring book. The story and visual wonders alone plead for someone to do a great documentary film on this man, his mission, his artistry and his ingenuity. Ken Burns, where are you? Here is your next PBS-TV award-winning program on American history.

Amazing program and a beautiful, inspiring book. Great photos and text.

Great book and really enjoy reading about the project.

good

This talented and compassionate man gave of himself to influence and help others by using art, architecture and recycled materials for shelter, community and spirit.

Review

Nothing short of spectacular...every image presented here is a mesmerizing masterpiece of light, shape, color, and form. (Miss Rosen Feature Shoot)Leiter's color photography offers its own version of chance: an attunement to the visual masterpieces that can be found in almost every urban instant. From the Publisher

From PDN, The Legends Issue, 2007Leiter's place is now assured. He will forever be known as one of the first photographers to use color in a serious, artistic way. Meticulously printed, his pictures use muted colors...that help tamp down the volume and motion of frenetic city streets. His prism tempers the more anxious, acerbic portrayal of city life offered by his peers Robert Frank and William Klein...Leiter's photographs are as likely to be compared to abstract expressionist painters like Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman or Richard Pousett-Dart.

Don't get me wrong: this little book of photographs --and it is little (8" x 8" square)-- is quite lovely. Personally I would like for it to be larger in format...and yet Saul Leiter's work is in itself quiet and understated, and therefore the book's small size seems to reflect something important about the artist and his aesthetic.HOWEVER, if you are at all concerned about such things, or a serious collector of photography books, you should know that amazon.com is NOT currently selling 2008/First Editions (as described in both the "Book Description" and "Product Details" areas above). The 2008 First Edition of this Steidl book sold out long ago, and what is currently shipping is the 2013/Fourth Printing edition of the book. I tried to bring this to the attention of Amazon.com staff via their customer service channels, but they seem incapable of understanding the crucial difference between a "First Edition" and a "Fourth Printing," and have therefore neglected to change the product information here on the site. Consider yourself warned!

This is a classic selection of Saul Leiter's color work. Absolutely wonderful, gorgeous photos. The quality of reproduction and layout is excellent. I am very happy with this book. I was not so happy with the seller "SuperBookDeals" that leads you to believe that the book is in stock, has "shipped" but in reality doesn't get actually shipped until about 3 weeks later. SuperBookDeals is very misleading as you can see if you review its feedback.

Had no expectations when ordering this book - but am very pleased I did. This is theideal small reference book with photos that are challenging in the sense that theyclearly 'make their own rules' for that time- creative and visually appealing, Colours are well reproduced and imagine it is a bookyou would return to often.

This is a review for the 2014 reprint. This is hands down one of the best photography books I own. Saul Leiter is an amazing photographer and the quality of this book is fantastic. If you are thinking about buying the self-titled book buy this one instead. Steidl always produces excellent products.

This book is simply wonderful. Saul Leiter is genius, and his work here is unparalleled. Stedil's reproductions are everything we have come to expect from the outstanding publishing house. Leiter 's color work is like viewing a surreal painting taking us back to another time period.

Our photography club ([...]) begins it's meetings with an educational series of photographers; one "legacy" and one "contemporary". Saul Leiter was a legacy shooter featured a few months ago so I picked up this book. Not a disappointment at all. I look through this book a few pages at a time before bed and I've looked through it two or three times now. These images are in one sense voyeuristic in that Leiter uses window reflections & other distortions to capture these images rather than point the camera directly at his subject. One reviewer notices that this gives a layered look to his images and he's right. This is a great book for opening a photographer's eye to new compositional possibilities and a possible expansion of style. Highly recommended.

A great book to own to see images that aren't necessarily 5k monitor sharp, but have soul.....

Saul is an amazing talent and his colour work is showcased beautifully in this compact volume. The size strikes a nice balance between size and comfortable handling and the printing is top notch.

Santa hit it just right with this book! My tractor fanatic son loves this book, and I even learned a little bit about farming while reading it! The book rhymes and the illustrations are great! I definitely recommend for any tractor loving boys!

We saw this book featured on Top Gear as the "fifty shades of grey for men". Great illustrations and catchy story for the young ones.

Had to buy it for my son after seeing Richard Hammond read it on Top Gear. Great book for any small mid or television presenter.

My 3 year old grandson loves this entire series of books! Perfect length as far as reading time, and my son in law says they are very accurate!

My Grandson just turned 3 & he has most of the Tony Mitton series of books. His favorites are Tough Trucks & Dazzling Diggers. He seems a little bored & distracted with this one .... I think he'll like it better when he's a little older.

My son loves this whole series of books. We received 2 for a Christmas gift and have purchased nearly all of the others since. They are thin, paperback books so not appropriate for little ones who will tear pages but my 2 1/2 year old does great with them. I love the rhyming and cute, colorful pictures.

My 2 year old son loves these books and is always wanting to read them again.

Toddler boys love it!
