Not long ago I saw that Mary White, founder of [...], had written Running a Bed & Breakfast For Dummies. I was interested to see what Mary, an experienced marketer, and founder of one of the top bed and breakfast directories, would have to say.With background of buying a b&b and operating it for four years, research from several books and an aspiring innkeeper class, and currently speaking at aspiring innkeeping classes on computer-related topics, I turned eagerly to read this book.Running a Bed & BreakfastIn the familiar "Dummies" manner, the book uses cartoons (some very cute!) to introduce the parts of the book, and uses icons to flag tips, important information and warnings of danger. The book is organized into six parts:1. Inn the Beginning: an outline of what a bed and breakfast is (and is not), potential marketing challenges, necessary social skills, and commitment, and a bit about the lifestyle change that a b&b brings.2. Transitioning from Inn Goer to Inn Owner: a discussion of professionals who can help, from inn consultants to accountants, and lawyers, creating a business plan and financial forecasts, along with a discussion of buying an existing inn versus starting a new inn from scratch.3. Getting Ready for Guests: setting up your record-keeping systems, choosing a property management system, setting rates and establishing policies, getting basic marketing in place, furnishing and decorating the inn, and even a few recipes to get things started.4. Up and Running: Day-to-Day Operations: this section covers guest communications and taking reservations, basic hospitality (taking care of guests), handling problem guests, chores and maintenance, and getting help you need when you need it.5. Taking It Beyond Breakfast and the Basics: how to analyze your results and make future projections, concrete marketing steps to help you move forward, and keeping yourself fine-tuned.6. The Part of Tens: collections of tips for cleaning economies of time and money, and ideas for getting guests to return.From even this brief outline of Running a Bed & Breakfast For Dummies you can see that Mary's book is a "soup to nuts" presentation. Not everyone (whether considering becoming an owner of a b&b, or already running a b&b) will find a need for every chapter, but nearly everyone will find value within its pages.For the prospective owner, the first section may help with the decision to move ahead with the plan. Because running a bed and breakfast is to engage in a lifestyle totally different than the experience of most people, it is not for everyone. Mary helpfully presents the activities and personality of an innkeeper. If a reader honestly considers whether that describes them, they will be greatly helped in deciding whether this is a lifestyle they can be comfortable with.One of the more helpful things found in Part I is the discussion of what a bed & breakfast is and what it is not. That may raise a smile, but there is no universally accepted definition of what constitutes a bed & breakfast. Consequently you find statements, like one found recently in a news article, that "technically [name omitted] is an inn, not a bed and breakfast." Excuse me? In this section Mary notes that often "inn", "bed and breakfast" and "country inn" can be used interchangeably, and then provides the definitions she will be using in the book. She also very helpfully points out that a B&B is not a cheap or second-rate lodging (despite often being a good value), it does not always mean a family-style breakfast, it does not mean sharing bathrooms, etc.The second part, Transitioning from Inn Goer to Inn Owner, contains a great amount of practical advice about working with professionals, preparing a business plan and financial forecasts, and putting it all together. For the prospective innkeeper, this will help in evaluating the property as a business and not an emotional choice. For existing innkeepers, these are tasks that should have been done before starting out, but can (and should) be revisited as checklists to help keep you on track.In speaking to aspiring innkeepers, the financial projections are the area they feel they need more information than almost any other. While many books or classes talk about the finances, Running a Bed & Breakfast For Dummies provides detailed information on the things to look for in the financial information, preparation of a business plan, etc.The second part then divides into advice for those purchasing an inn, and those starting a new inn. For example, there is an excellent section discussing how to set rates, and the factors to consider when doing so.As its title implies, Up and Running: Day-to-Day Operations, contains material perhaps more suited to the new innkeeper, but, like the preceding section, also has many pointers that experienced innkeepers can take to heart.Part V is suitable for anyone. Indeed, perhaps it is more suitable for the experienced innkeeper, because it assumes that the basics have been mastered, the inn is operational, and it is time to "take it to the next level." Mary provides details for tracking results and comparing them to expectations, adjusting expenses to increase profits, dealing with issues of guest satisfaction, keeping yourself from burning out, and making decisions for the future (including growing the business, increasing profit by various means, and buying another inn). Some of the marketing ideas in this part would be valuable for any innkeeper.The final part contains two chapters. The first is a list of cleaning hints to save money and make cleaning easier and more effective. The second is a list of examples of ways to provide guests with that service that is the particular domain of the bed and breakfast: hospitality!Final ThoughtsWhen considering a new venture, such as the purchase of a bed & breakfast, most will do some research, looking for books on the topic, and seeking help from knowledgeable sources. It was extremely helpful! I feel that reading it- which was a hefty read, but covered almost everything I think I'll need someday- has prepared me to consider what I need and how I can do it. I love the tips and warnings bullets within the text to bring important points to the reader's attention. I also like the recipes but wish there were some more personal hints and stories within. It is essential if you want to design or run your own B&B.

This book is easy to read, interesting and full of practical advice for anyone considering operating a bed and breakfast. The author presents issues for the reader to consider before taking the plunge into owning a B&B from both a personal and a financial point of view. There are practical tips from setting up accounting to how-to get stains out of carpet. I've found the book so helpful that I've tabbed my chapters for easy reference. I highly recommend reading this book!

My husband is thinking this may be his second career... so I got him some light summer reading to contemplate his choices. This seems to touch on most of the topics to give him a taste of what he would need to know / do.

Believe it or not...of all the books I bought when designing and opening my successful B&B a few years ago, this was the best go-to book. It isn't the only good resource, but certainly one of the best to own and is easy to take in when you are on a busy schedule.

This is essential reading, along with our THE BREAD IS IN THE BED; How to Make More Money as a B&B Innkeeper for ANY prospective B&B owners.We learned the hard way, and only wished these books were available BEFORE we bought our inn! Sure, you'll learn one way or the other, but innkeeping is hard enough to try to tackle every subject as it comes along. Take advantage of innkeeping veterans willing to share great advice.B&B for Dummies outlines an incredible array of subjects facing the new innkeeper. Chapter 4 is a lengthy treatise on everything you need to consider before buying an existing inn, and Chapter 5 tells you the considerations for starting your business from scratch. Both are incredibly valuable depending on your situation, but here is where the book (by design) stops short of giving advice.There are 18 Chapters jam packed with information,from zoning considerations to furnishing to record keeping to maintenance to staffing to marketing and even to some tasty breakfast recipes. It's a true compendium that you will keep referring to on your innkeepers bookshelf long after you buy your property.The Dummies book is limited to outlining the massive number of OPTIONS, but doesn't actually offer OPINIONS. That's where The Bread is in The Bed comes in. It tells you WHICH of these considerations is the most important to the new innkeeper, and why. For example, should I buy a B&B or a Country inn? Why? Which is more important - Facebook or French Toast?Another quick example of why you need both books is illustrated in Chapter 2: Analyzing What Brings Guests to the Area. Dummies gives you over FIFTY nearby attractions that could bring you guests. Here are a few: Churches, Amusement Parks, Art fairs, Fine Dining, Winter Sports, Historic Sites, Film Festivals, Beaches, Concerts, Covered Bridges, Gardens, Biking.All these sound pretty reasonable, right?Umm, no. Three-quarters of these spell DEATH to your inn business. If you don't intuitively know which of these are winners and which are losers, then you need The Bread is in The Bed to tell you which ones to focus on and WHY. See what I mean about options vs opinions? After reading Bread Bed you will instinctively know which of the fifty items to cross out and which to focus on.Okay, maybe death was a bit dramatic. But you need to know what works in the REAL WORLD after you know the extraordinary amount of crap that the the real world will throw at you. Which of these can you build a successful business around? (Hint, three, possibly four of the twelve).After 15 years of innkeeping, we have earned a certain amount of street cred. I'm telling you that if you actually buy a B&B or Inn without reading these books, it would have been be less painful just to get out your revolver and shoot yourself in the foot. Just sayin'.Happy innkeeping! It can be a wonderful life. It will be a heck of a lot easier if you start it with your eyes wide open and know what might possibly come along. Forewarned is forearmed, and that is why you absolutely must read Running a Bed & Breakfast for Dummies and The Bread is in The Bed. These books are a financial afterthought compared to the huge dollar and emotional investment of the innkeeping world!(Update 5/9/13 - I forgot to mention that Bread Bed is our book. Great book! A wonderful resource for painting animals, insects, plants, flowers, buildings, people, landscape elements, etc.

I love this book! I first saw this book in a painting class I took. The book has everything you need as a beginner in Chinese brush painting. Stroke instructions for many plants and animals with helpful tidbits. I find this medium more challenging than acrylics so I needed this book. To each their own. The book is both hard cover and spiral bound inside so it stays open to the example while you’re working. Pages are thick to withstand much use. I’ve included a photo of the table of contents. Highly recommend!

i am an occasional painter and wanted a more disciplined approach to learning so i got this book. i have read through the pages before the motif exercises. now i have started on the motifs - the four gentlemen. the instructions for the bamboo include painting in ink and in colour. i consider the instructions brief and sufficient, and have immediately helped me paint the bamboo in the 'proper way' in terms of brush strokes. i didn't have chinese ink, only used black poster colour so the colour isn't so vibrant. but good to practise and learn the brush strokes. i highly recommend this book for beginners.

When I was growing up, I had inherited a book from my grandmother, and an inkstone. The book showed all the motifs of Chinese art, and all the writing was in Chinese, but you knew it was a step by step instruction. My favorite pictures to copy with my crayons and pencils back then were the mountain scenes, and those beautiful scenes of karst mountains with rivers flowing between them have haunted my dreams. Sadly I lost this book when I was in college. When I was in Japan this year, I found an inkstone set, and I wanted to get something like my grandmother's book. HEre was the answer, only this time in English, so i could understand everything.There is so much material to work with!I have used this book with my traditional materials (ink & inkstone, brush), and I also have used Akashiya brush-pens from Japan and Akashiya Sai brush-markers. The latter two things I have only found in Japan but they are very helpful for practicing the strokes without using up precious ink.

I've been doing CBP for years and have a number of books. If you can only have one I'd say this is the one to have just to enjoy the relaxation of Chinese Brush Painting. Well organized. The pictures are great and it is well written! I'll have to tell my CBP teacher about it. I learned about it from a friend who brought her little girl over to do some CBP with me and she had this book. She was only 10 but doing just what the book told her and showed her to do and making nice rice paper painting. I mounted a couple for her so they could then mount her best paintings on their own. Great book for any age!

I have 2 of these books because I used the first one in an art calss and it was so loved that it became well loved and a bit frazzled, so I was delighted to find a source to get another. The colors are crisp and clear and even a novice can make the images. I had never "brush painted"before. I made several pieces from the easily interpreted instructions and they were so well done that I could sell tehm to make money to buy more supplies for my art class of teenagers at a local youth center. My friend had them professionally framed! I really was impressed thatteenagers loved this book so that they would come in daily just to draw a different animal, vegetable or flower in the "style". They enjoyed this more than the "tattoo" images they like so much. I have also applied the technique in my silk painting class. The ladies of all ages flocked to buy this book. I have many books on the Chinese Brush painting techniques and this is the most diverse, lovely and neccessary one I own. It is a true bargain. Artists in acrylic, oil and watecolr have also "HAD TO HAVE this book!

This has the most variety of different animals and flowers in it that I've seen in the dozens of brush painting books I've looked at. It's a good reference for both copying to learn, practice and inspiration. It may not be a strictly traditional approach, but there is no doubt that the examples are beautiful, strokes clearly shown, colors are suggested and the paintings retain a Chinese art style.

This is a Small! and very handy book: it is about 6" x 6" and this hard cover edition comes with a spiral spine. It is Very comprehensive. Each page gives a short demo how to accomplish a painting, with the color ink to use, done in this artist's particular style. I only have a very few books, but I chose to pick this one after my teacher showed the class this one (she brings in books from her vast collection Every Week; I've bought only a couple that inspired me, this was one. I've been in class for 6 years...)

Excellent book for ndeb or AFK

it is very goog book

This book does not cover some of the basic theory required for the ABO exam. For example, some major topics in the ABO like embryology, biology of tooth movement, bio-materials, extractions, canine impactions, root resorption, white spot lesions, presurgical orthodontics etc. are overlooked in the text. Instead, there is an overemphasis on 3D imaging with chapters 5, 25 and 26 dedicated to this topic. Similarly the contents in chapters 12, 20, 24 are never questioned in the exam. Also, I found there is too much overlap between some topics (e.g. functional appliances ch 11 & 13). The chapter 12 on Invisilign system looks as if it is an advertisement sponsored by Align Tech (most of the references in this chapter are from non-peer reviewed sources). Ideally the authors should have provided an unbiased overview of all clear aligners. The chapter on skeletal anchorage (ch 18) is more about conventional palatal implants rather than mini-implants that are often the focus of the ABO exam. The chapter I liked most was the one on craniofacial deformities (Ch 21) which was well written.Actually, when the second edition of this came out I expected that some of the shortcomings of the first edition would have been corrected. But unfortunately only cosmetic changes to the page layout have been done without rigorous editing of the content. Some of the answers are too wordy and fails to answer the question. For example, one of the questions in chapter 11 is “What are the contraindications to early treatment?” Instead of providing a direct response to this straightforward question, the answer provided by the authors are “early orthodontic treatment is not always necessary or appropriate. Certainly not all orthodontic therapy delivered under the guise of "early treatment" is good treatment, as for example in instances of young patients being treated for extended periods of time with regimens that have ill-defined goals and unpredictable outcomes. In such situations, early treatment may serve only to increase treatment duration and cost; such intervention may result in patient and parental "burnout." Early treatment is not indicated in those instances in which early intervention does not change the environment appreciably for dentofacial development and permanent tooth eruption”. Even wasting time to ready this lengthy essay, I am cannot still find the contraindications for early treatment.  So my final take: this book may be ONLY used in the initial stages of preparing for the exam for providing an overview of some clinical topics and should NOT be relied as the sole text for the ABO exam.

I was never a huge Sex Pistols music fan. That said, as a fan of punk music and lifestyle, I was very aware of, and always a bit curious to know more about them. I coincidentally became a big Steve Jones fan when visiting Los Angeles and stumbled onto "Jonesies Jukebox" radio show when the now shuttered Indie 101 was still on the LA airwaves.Steve’s knowledge of music is foregone conclusion but I found his understated British humor to be highly infections.Thus, I couldn't wait to get my hands on "Lonely Boy" when I heard about it. I was not disappointed. Everyday I'd look forward to my allocated reading time so I could catch up on Steve's storytelling. At times sad, but most of the time funny and always brutally honest, Steve doesn't hold back and let's readers in on the most intimate parts of his childhood and his often painful, journey through adulthood (both in and out of the band), with real, raw emotion.Fans of Sex Pistols will love this book of course, but if you are not a fan, trust me, don't let that stop you. The subject is fascinating regardless of your musical tastes. This book was hard to put down. I highly recommend it to anyone in need of a good read.

Hilarious, profane, occasionally mind-boggling, and always brutally honest, Lonely Boy was clearly not ghost-written. I've always loved Steve as a personality as well as a guitarist... and this book explains why in no uncertain terms.This might be the most enjoyable rock autobio I've ever read - and I've read 'em all. Vive le Jonesy!

Steve Jones' journey through his life with the early success and demise of The Sex Pistols. Interesting career with a happy ending. One of the best rock autobiographies ever written.

"There's not a shelf in the library high enough for this s**t, is there? This is the good stuff you just don't get from the guy from Nickelback (at least, not as far as I know)."-If you like music, buy this...Easily went through 10 chapters in one sitting.

It was fun learning about Steve's clobber and all the different toffs' gaffs he kipped in. I like the musical spontaneous combustion that was the Sex Pistols as much as the next person, but none of them are welcome to stay in my house. I loved John's books but I think I liked this better. It's a better history of the Pistols because, remember, Johnny came lately to them. The Pistols evolved from Steve and Paul's earliest thrashings on whatever gear Steve managed to steal for them. Which was considerable. When you think about it, the best, or most influential and original, bands are ones where they all learned to play their instruments together and STAYED together. John, Paul and George were at it by around 14, 15, and 16. There's really just a handful of bands where there's them, and then there's everyone else. There was The Beatles, and then there was everyone else. For "psychedelia" there was Hendrix, and then there was everyone else. And not just for the guitar-playing but the records. The three albums in his lifetime. There was Elvis, and there was everyone else. Major similarities really to Elvis, Scotty and Bill (and later DJ) and the Sex Pistols. Bass, guitar, and drums working with an untried singer finding their way as they went along. As far as "punk" (if you must) goes, there was The Sex Pistols and there was everyone else.

Fantastic book!! I love the Pistols and love hearing Jonesies' side of the story. Johnny (Rotten) Lyndon is always rewriting history from his perspective. I read it in a few days and then let an older coworker read it too. He couldn't put it down. Honest, straight forward writing with a lot of English slang I'm still trying to figure out. All the happenstance stuff leading up to the Pistols and then all of the drama and wreckage of being 22 years old and being completely washed up. Loved it- Sex, drugs, & rock n roll!!! And maybe even a happy ending??? Even if u don't care for the Sex Pistols, this is a great read. And he confesses to all the stuff he stole when he was a kid; He might be the only guy to write a best seller and lose more money than he earned from paying back all the gear he ripped off. Jonesie names names and isn't afraid to make himself look like a jerk. Plus the struggle of getting sober and being a sex addict. What a character and what a book. Highly recommended!! Oi Oi Oi!!!

This book was incredible! What an amazing story. Funny. Rock n roll. I felt like I could hear Jonesy's voice reading it to me. In true fashion, he holds nothing back. It's all the filth and the fury you would expect to hear about being Sex Pistol! Highly recommend.

I have anticipated this book for a long time. I love Steve Jones. I'm so glad I was able to read his story and I'm thankful he shared his story. I had listened to his radio show for quite some time and I am very excited to learn more about him. There was always kind of a mystery to him and I wanted to know more. I'm glad he finally was able to put out his side of the story and the details about his life and upbringing as horrendous as they are I think he can and has helped people who have gone through similar situations feel like they aren't alone.

I'm pleased with Minecraft Fractions book. The instructions are clear and to the point, followed by the appropriate problems.It doesn't simply show how to solve the problem, but it explains why it can be solved that way. Also, word problems inspire kids to create many strategies. Tables and diagrams help to evaluate what is going on with the problem and why it works this way and does not work in another way.The Brainers give great hints on how to master fractions skills!

Fractions are a hard concept, but ths helped because they liked to see the different minecraft characters and I allowed them to color the pictures. They liked to work to a point where they got to take a break and do the little puzzles and coloring. It was easy to use. My kids liked it and asked to keep doing pages. Directions were pretty clear. Worth the buy!

This is a very good book to understand and practice fractions. Instructional and explanatory materials are helpful. The word problems are well-designed and exciting for the kids. What I especially like about the book is the way how they underlined questions and the given information. My kid always knows what he's supposed to do. Minecraft coloring is an excellent approach to the kid who hates math. I'm very excited to have found this series. Recommended!

What a fantastic math book!My kid is often talking about Minecraft. This is a fun idea to enrich math workbook. The problems are well designed and clearly explain, and help the kids visualize the different fractions. This is simply perfectly perfect!

This is awesome! I showed it to my son and immediately his eyes lit up. He loves the Minecraft concepts and to have it all applied to math and fractions is just genius!! He has a higher motivation to learn math through this book. Now he looks forward to reviewing his math, whereas with other math workbooks he was absolutely dreading it.

This is the second installment in the Alan Campbell series in the VGO Universe ExpansionThis was a fantastically written story. I love how well Alan develops on this story, with believing more in himself but also learning to rely on others as well.The ancillary characters in this portion of the series are expanded upon also and an stunningly well done job of it. Everyone seems so full of life and you get sucked right into the action of the moment. Each character seems to be full of life and you can feel the time, caring and amount of craft that was put into the world building and development of everything.This story focuses more strictly on Alan's adventures this time and his struggles. It doesnt disappoint either ti lead you down a crazy road of fun, exhilarating twists and turns. At some points I was even shouting out loud because I was so pumped up or I just couldn't believe what had just happened but for you to find those point out you'll have to buy the book.Provous, Casius, Nim and a few characters others make a return and play a role in making Alan into the man who he is turn into be.I also enjoyed the IRL parts of the story, it really humanizes Osmark to a point that we dont get from any of the other stories still. There is some big twists in the IRL side of the story to that will have lasting consequences.Without a doubt I recommended buying this book and have to say DJ is a stealer Author that is on the rise. I can't wait to see the 3rd installment of this series and to see what else he writes.

This book was amazing. It picks up right where The Illusionist Book 1 leaves, and while being much darker (which worked WONDERS for the setting!) it still has a little bit of humor, a lot of mystery, enough twists and turns to keep the reader hooked on what's happening, and the mechanics of the class...oh my word. When The Artificer, the first "DLC" novel to VGO, first came out I thought that was my favorite class without competition. Well, The Illusionist, and Alan Campbell, are swiftly replacing Osmark and the Artificer in that category. At several points throughout the story I had to keep reminding myself that this is before VGO officially launches, and that Alan is still the only Traveler in the game. The perspectives and plot devices are spellbinding, and somehow D.J. Bodden has channeled the best parts of that class to keep readers enthralled. Even if it wasn't a LitRPG set in the eternally-immersive world of Viridian Gate Online, it is extremely well written and can stand on its own with little effort. As always, I am eagerly looking forward to the next novel and can't wait for the next installment, whoever the character of focus may be! (Seriously hoping Nil gets its own side story, but to find out why you'll just have to read Dead Man's Tide!)

Frankly speaking, I’ve come to enjoy the different point of views and perspectives provided by the Viridian Gate Online side stories, I feel that Nomad and Deadman’s Tide provide a nice precursor to show some of the issues faced by Robert Osmark prior to the start of the series. I also enjoy how the Overminds are being further personified and showcased because it adds depth and intricacy to their existence, I am still very curious about the many aspects we’ve yet to encounter. I also pray that we will eventually get side stories for Jeff and Cassandra and perhaps even get see more of Ivan. All and all, the VGO series is quite concrete.

D.J. Bodden and James Hunter create a fun, exciting adventure with vivid characterization and set pieces. Their writing is as smooth as Alan Campbell himself, and the dialogue pulses with wit. The action comes often, though not too often, and always satisfies. My only complaint is that they went a little light on the rpg elements. With such a neat idea as the Illusionist class, I hunger for more level ups and nifty class skill descriptions. Still, I strongly recommend this book and intend to preorder its successor as soon as I can.

I like this book better than the first, I think The Illusionist book 1 was more of a stage setter where as this was more of his new life in V.G.O. I also like that it is not that Imperal oriented (I personally don't care for the Empire). I really found Nil's character interesting. His ability cool & his behavior is sort of an enigma yet disciplined for a monster.

My only complaint would be the revolving door of supporting characters. If love to read more with Nik and Gnasher

Alan Campbell never imagined just how much his life would change upon setting foot inside Viridian Gate Online. His only intention had been to show its creator that the game has promise. That it wasn't a mere fluke. With death, he'd achieved that feat, never once taking into account the fact that he was now immortalized forever inside the game itself. If he's to succeed in surviving such a cruel and unexpected world, he'll have to learn everything possible with every passing second. Only then will he be able to prove himself to the game gods and Osmark himself.I love, love, love this game world James and the authors he works with have created. They've given us such diverse characters, each intent on expanding upon the world of Elgard. These are characters with unique beginnings. Characters that find themselves on unequal footing. Each, however, is determined to survive, no matter the cost.From the moment I was introduced to Alan's part in this eclectic world, I was hooked. The author has this knack of showing us the world Alan inhabits through every step he takes. Not only that, he also broadens each aspect of this diverse world with each of the unique characters that are introduced as the story goes on.If you haven't given the VGO series a chance, you definitely should. This is a game world where anything is possible. I so can't wait to see what the author has in store for us next.More, please!
