10 Years ago, I fractured my right ankle and my balance remains a bit off. Migraines also contribute to a lack of balance at times. This book helps with exercises to better my balance. I like it.

FALL PREVENTION was a good book. It reminded me of all the routines I did with my PHYSACAL THEROPSTS over the years. I have MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS and I am 61 so I fall a lot. I will use the book to help train my support group on how to avoid falls.Also retrain my self.

This book is definitely a winner. Having spent a lot of time working with an older population, I'm always searching for a manual that clients will actually enjoy reading on their own. Oftentimes, coverage of this material is dry at best, which is unfortunate, because it is such an important topic. However, the team of Davies and Scully seem to write with the reader in mind--there are cute illustrations, it's easy to navigate, and the reader really learns a lot of simple exercises and techniques. I would definitely recommend it as a must read for anyone who has ever felt concerned for theirs--or a loved ones--balance, etc.

Dr. Krishan Mahajan has been amicus curiae of the Supreme Court of India in the cases of the Taj Mahal, the tombs of Ghalib, Zauq and the mausoleum of Nizammudin Auliya. His doctoral work on the Protection of Monuments of National Importance, legal village field studies on land reforms, women home workers, bonded labour, leprosy patients, carcass flayers has given him an insight into the reality of public law culture. The operational court and judicial culture experience comes from his work as a senior Central Government counsel at the Supreme Court. The learning of the political economy of the law comes from his private practice on contracts, banking, corporate, criminal, environmental, intellectual property, taxation, revenue, land, labour and service laws across courts in India. His experience of the alternative culture of the law comes from his conciliation, negotiation and mediation works as a Supreme Court trained and certified mediator as also from his private practice in arbitration. The linkage of education, information and culture is derived from his experience as a consultant of the National Human Rights Commission and of several universities. This has been reflected in his writings as a Journalist For Europe in Paris, in the weekly legal columns in The Hindustan Times, in academic journals and papers of international conferences and as the pan-India Law editor of The Indian Express. The law and politics interaction was experienced by him in the drafting of Parliamentary Bills and notifications for several Union Government Ministries. The academic foundation for this was his law and economics training in Delhi University which was developed further as the Sterne Fellow of the Columbia Law School, U.S.A and a Fellow of the Japan Foundation. His teaching forte has been law and culture as the Dean of the National Law School, Odisha and as a Professor at the National Law School, Patiala. Presently, he is the Additional Registrar and Controlling Officer of the Supreme Court’s Centre for Research & Planning and continues his learning of legal culture.

Even days after you sit there thinking about the ramifications of this book, how this future could occur, how offensive Atwood’s world is, how demeaning to women it is. Demeaning is not even a good enough word to describe Offred’s existence, but you will need to read this to fully grasp that existence. And this is what I mean – you will spend days pondering her existence and the true meaning of it.This is a look at a future in which the United States has collapsed and turned into the Republic of Gilead.In this disturbing new republic, all women have lost their rights and are basically divided into different classes.There are the wives, those that are lucky enough to be married to the Males in charge. There are those that have become servants. And there are those, such as the main character, that are being used as walking wombs.The world is a very different place in this future, one in which there and much lower rates of births due to too many chemicals in the air and soil. The few births that are managed have a much higher rate of birth defectsAs a result, some women are given to a household with the express purpose of having a baby. They agree to this, in a sense, the other option is to work in a radioactive waste land until you die. Choice is an interesting term.These women are cared for by the household, and once a month, the man of the house attempts to impregnate them.This is the story of one of these women, Offred. This is not her real name, their names are changed.I won’t give too much more away, this is something that should be read so you can fully immerse yourself in what is a cultural classic, but is also an exceptional story of taking the gender balance to one extreme or the other.Atwood’s language, her use of prose is just so delicate, the way she describes what is happening to these women, how she details the absolute atrocities of this new society, and yet everyone just agrees to it.The amazing thing is, it just happens overnight, the main character tells us that one day, her accounts are frozen, she loses her job, her rights and her life.The terrifying aspect of this story, the undeniable truth that makes this story so brilliant and so extraordinary, is that as you read it, as you follow Offred’s horrifying reality, you can actually see this unfolding in our reality. Atwood’s story is laid out so realistically, so carefully and even now, 30yrs after publication, that it could so easily be our future.There is a lot that could be written here about the current state of the world, and how this could be related to the future that Atwood is trying to portray, but I could be here for days trying to cover all that is required.Needless to say that there are far too many similarities between Atwood’s world and ours at the beginning of her story, of how the US moved to its inevitable collapse and its new Nation State, Gilead.Atwood’s characters are written so beautifully in this story, this alternate reality, Offred’s account of her time at the Commanders house, and her relationships with the other members of that household, from the bitter Wife, through to the ‘Martha’s’, the Servants that are there to look after her and the family, and the other Members of her Order. All of it is chilling in its serenity, its day to day routine, and how this is so utterly surreal in the degradation of women, and how everyone seems perfectly at ease with it.I fully understand now why everyone refers to this book so often, why it is discussed as a masterpiece, and why Margaret Atwood is looked at as being one of the most incredible authors of the 20th Century.This is one of those books, which should be in every list of Top 10/50 Sci-Fi lists of books that every Sci-Fi enthusiast should read. And more to the point, if you are anyone that has any interest in Women (I have 2 young Daughters and have worked with DV for years), this is also a book you should read so you understand a possible future that we should avoid at any costs.If you have not read it make sure you do.

I realize that I am late coming to the ‘Handmaid’ party. It has been my intention to read it for some long time, but for some reason that I don’t fully understand, I was intimidated by the gravity of the book. I really wanted to be impressed, but Atwood’s view of a dark dystopian society left me depressed, confused and ultimately bored.I confess, I couldn’t finish the book. I couldn’t force myself to endure more than 115 pages peppered with complete and unnecessary gibberish. ‘If I have an egg, what more can I want?’ There are tons of this fluff.Atwood’s view of the future, and I assume that’s what I think we must consider that she intends, is poppycock. A nightmare with no beginning, middle or end. If this is what is in store for us, count me out.I was interested in a storyline or two along the way, but the author refused to develop them, instead droning on and on about meaningless details in the heroine’s life, or existence.I couldn’t go any further. My mind kept drifting to all the really entertaining stories out there, waiting to be read and enjoyed. Why was I wasting precious time reading tripe?

I first read The Handmaid's Tale around the time it was published in 1986. I was just 22, a sheltered young thing. I recall wondering what everyone was raving about, since only the top story layer of the book connected for me. Now, with decades of life experience behind me, I see that this is a deeply moving, complex book. I'm so glad I decide to read again just at this moment in time.You would think that something written thirty years ago would seem dated. But that wasn't the case for me. If anything, I think there are so many things imagined in the book which have become more possible today instead of less. In a sense, this is a cautionary tale that a large art of the population ignored or misunderstood.More than ever, we should be reading this and sharing it with the young women in our lives. And discussing it with them, so they see more of the depth than my 22-year-old self did.Margaret Atwood imagined a world where a totalitarian power went into action against foreign zealots and their own people's "wanton" behavior. This power was meant to make the world better, but it also created a world of highly distinct "haves" and "have nots."She says, “Better never means better for everyone... It always means worse, for some.” It might be just me (although I suspect not) but this sure sounds like what we often hear today on the news and in conversations.Reading this at the end of 2016 after a brutal election cycle, the following quote from Atwood seems both wise and horrible. Have we not been hearing about people who feel invisible?“We were the people who were not in the papers. We lived in the blank white spaces at the edges of print. It gave us more freedom. We lived in the gaps between the stories"Atwood's Republic of Gilead gives people one-dimensional functions. Correction - she gives women one-dimensional functions. They are Wives, Marthas, Handmaids, Aunts, or Unwomen (and a few more which would be spoilers). Unwomen are rebels, likely to be banished to the toxic waste dumps of the colonies. Everyone else plays a part in the singular female focus - procreation. As I read, I wondered what category I'd fall into should I have the bad luck to land in Gilead. I used this guide while touring Brittany several years ago and found the directions accurate and the descriptions extremely helpful. It was an invaluable resource for hunting down megaliths and other prehistoric rock structures, especially those located on private land. I highly recommend taking a copy of this book with you if you are exploring ancient sites on your own. It was one of the best adventures among my travels in northern France.

Superb writing, essays on nature that are inspiring, moving, thought provoking and stylistically graceful, integrative, honest, and an island of wonderful writing and thinking. Rare and much welcomed. I am reading all of Quammen's books of essays and am already anxiously anticipating major grief when I reach the end of the lot. Perhaps I shall have to simply start reading them all over again!

This collection was recommended to me by a university instructor and author. I was very confused for the first half of the collection and due to some excellent writing I was totally confused by the end. There are several selections that do not seem to fit however all are extremely well written and insightful. Each selection taken by itself is thought provoking and complete. By that I mean that they have a beginning and easily conclude. Do not cause yourself the brain damage I encountered by trying to tie them together. Enjoy them as individuals and the writing that flows as if it were understandable poetry.

Thoughtful compendium of science and philosophical essays. As I understand it these come from Outside Magazine and maybe other published sources. Well written and easy to read. If you have read These before then take a pass. If not, enjoy.

David Quammen's collections of essays and longer work are all equally fine non-fiction pieces. He compares favorably to some of the very best non-fiction voices—John McPhee comes to mind.A slight warning, though. Quammen is slightly pessimistic in his view of mankind's impact on global ecology. His message can be a little discouraging on occasion.

Quammen has proved once again why is one of my very favorite authors; he covers a wide variety of natural history topics (all interesting) with humor and clarity

In this book Daniel Goleman, author of Emotional Intelligence books, chronicles Dalai Lama's latest efforts to promote an ongoing conversation between Western scientists and practitioners of meditation and Buddhism. It includes a number of interesting chapters that outline the methods and results Western scientists have been able to produce by studying the state of the mind of highly trained meditators. It also explores negative emotions, ways to understand them, and ways to avoid them. Personally, I found the book very thought provoking and absorbing. You will definitely question your own emotional states, moods, and personality. If you have never read anything about the Dalai Lama or practiced meditation, it's impact may be lessened.

"Destructive Emotions" is an account of one of the earliest meetings of the Mind and Life Symposium. These events started as a way for the Dalai Lama to learn how western science can be compared, contrasted, and perhaps integrated - as he has said repeatedly, "If science proves Buddhism wrong, then Buddhism must change."This particular meeting drove Richard Davidson's original imaging experiments examining the effects of meditation on the brain. By showing how meditation affected brain structure and activity, the scientific arguments for meditation were made. The description of the experiments and their implications is a major feature of this book, and is worth a read for anyone interested in the origins of the mindfulness movement.For a document covering both science and spirituality, it's surprisingly accessible. Daniel Goleman writes lucidly. You don't need to be a scientist or a Buddhist to enjoy reading this book.

In general, I liked this book and found it useful. I thing it contains a lot of good concepts, but because of the dialogue format it is difficult to get one's arms around all the concepts. There are also some holes that are left unaddressed, again probably because of the format.Given the above context, I think that there are many gems in this book and a lot of practical advice. Reading the dialogue between all these prominent people is thought provoking and challenges you to consider the underlying assumptions of your own emotional life.There is a lot of good advice in this book about handling destructive emotions, but the scope is actually wider than that. I found it to be more of an exploration of the nature of emotion and how to live with emotions in a balanced way.There are advantages and disadvantages to this approach to writing. There are a number of reviews that praise this book and others that shoot it down. I think the reality is somewhere in the middle.The people engaged in the dialogue are great choices, but somehow when the book went to print I think the written form missed capturing the full spirit of what went on at the actual event. I wasn't there, but I get a sense that in the transfer from speaking to writing some important meanings didn't come across.In spite of my feedback above, I wouldn't be discouraged from buying this book. It is unique and has a lot to say. My three star rating is merely an indication that I think the information could have been presented better and perhaps elaborated on in a way that brought the concepts more to life.

Years ago, thinking the Dalai Lama doesn't lead a normal life in the midst of a chaotic society, I did not study his teaching until I had a chance to read this book. Boy was I wrong! He understands human emotions at the deepest and most profound level that no man or psychologist has before. When translated and explained in lay men's terms, I can now hope that Buddhism will bring tremendous relief to the stressed out working population of the US. We allow our negative emotions too much control.This book will lead most of us out of our dark cell into a happier place.

Must reading for anyone treating trauma survivors with complexPTSD and very good in tandem with Judith Herman's TRAUMA ANDRECOVERY.

This is the evidence that shows why we are suffering so much and it provides a wonderful way of handling our emotions. It describes a series of talks between western scientists and the dalai lama with other buddhist masters, where they all discuss about destructive emotions. The buddhist perspective on this topic is very interesting and I am sure we all can benefit from it.
