It's pretty rare that I give a book 5 stars but this deserves each one. It's a small book that easily fits into a small purse but it's packed with a lot of very practical advice. Well thought out. I have ovarian cancer and have been in non-stop chemotherapy for almost 5 years. I have hair so it's not apparent and even amongst my close friends. because I have hair, they forget I am dealing with a disease and treatment that causes severe fatigue, periodic sickness and sometimes, cognitive slowness. And as the cancer continues, most all of the people who were so gung-ho to help me early on have long fallen by the wayside - and that includes my church.There are suggestions that I would personally consider very patronizing, but overall, the suggestions are good. Two particular tidbits in the book that I can appeciate is 'not making a person a project' and 'many small things make a friend'. I have a woman who clearly has made it her mission to preach to me via religious cards (and I am already a faithful Christian) and it irks me to no end. Also, people think unless they have time for some grand gesture they can't do anything - so no one does anything for me. Some of the suggestions in this book are perfect examples of what may seem like small things that really go a long way to just let someone know you're thinking about them.I recommend, as others have, that every church and every doctor's office keep a copy of this little but powerful book.

I love little books like this...full of ideas of ways to help others that are unable to do things for themselves or kindness ideas for others that are fighting an illness. This book gives the full range of ideas...lots that I would of never thought of and are great ideas. This is a wonderful little reference book to keep in my little home library that I can refer back to from time to time!

Great book. Explains what to say and what not to say. Really clever inexpensive ideas on how to brighten a chronically ill person's day. My favorite was to purchase matching coffee mugs for you and your friend, and then commit to pray for one another while using them.

I knew I would enjoy this book, because I was able to preview a few pages on the Amazon site. I also like how it is a good, small size. I am able to pull it out of my purse when I am looking for that right thing to say or do, or if I need some reassurance that other people are going through similar difficult situations as I am.

Practical and inspiring. I'm going to do 30 of the suggestions for sure. It's a quick read- especially like kindle addition to grab the ones that inspired with my phone.

Content of book is great but very tattered. Wondered where this book had been!.

Many times we dont know what to say nor do we know what to do when we intered with someone who has a chronic illness.It is a good book that everyone should.,and it should be in all church libraries.many times we become so desentised to the needs of others.This book reminds us of how we should treat others.Agreat read for everyone.

Exceptionally lucid overview of power analysis, effect sizes, sample size calculations and related topics. Along the way, the book also provides a good overview of the null hypothesis significance testing controversy, the problems with familywise alpha corrections like Bonferroni, publication bias, the almost-universal misinterpretation of p-values and other methodological issues. Heartily recommended as a practical guide for researchers and statisticians, but also for readers with an interest in the foundations of statistics or the sociology of science.Most statistics courses gloss over power analysis, and after all, there's only five or six equations (or one piece of software) that you need to learn how to use, but it absolutely pays to have a methodological grasp of what it is you're doing when calculating a sample size or estimating power. Again, wonderful book.

I am such a nerd; I actually emailed friends to tell them I was excited that this book was on my summer reading list. But it is, and I'm enjoying it very much. This is the clearest presentation of three very complex and important subjects: Effect size, power analysis, and meta analysis. This treatment is not comprehensive or detailed to the degree that other texts are; if you want an introduction that introduces these topics, this is it. If you want the background math and theory in detail, consult the references listed at the back.Too many stats texts (if not the majority) seem to focus on p values and alpha testing, versus computing and interpreting effect size. I've taught statistics and research design at Psychology Departments at various universities over the past 25+ years before retiring from that. If I still taught, I would definitely include this book, even at the undergraduate level, and refer to it at least when dealing with effect size.

An excellent primer or review of statistics for studies. The writer gets to the point and avoids the basics of stats, instead narrowing in on the problem of low power studies causing type II errors and navigating the reader on how to balance between their expected effect size, power, alpha, measurement error and the availability bias of published results.

I found this book to be an excellent primr that helped me grasp the concept of effect size. Prior reviewers of this book have done an excellent job documenting the content so I need not re-type a content description. I will add that Mr. Ellis done an exceptional job of making the concepts accessible to the lay reader interested in meta-analysis and effect size. His examples and explanations help grasp the concepts and appreciate the nuances of the parameters he is describing. I would recommend this book as a great place to start to understand these concepts.

This is a very good book! A bit more oriented toward academic/publishing perspective but full of practical insights that business users / practitioners such as myself can truly benefit from. With the proliferation of "a/b testing" with online world and commonplace, yet important questions on sample sizes, proper way of setting up experiments, all the way to data mining (pitfalls of opportunistic "finding something") - this book, to me, gave lot of food for thought.

In healthcare, effect size understanding is necessary during informing decision analysis (Lang & Secic). Well written, easy to understand with a basic knowledge of statistics.

Is a useful reference.It would be nice if it also included a section on Bayes factors.

This book makes clear what Effect Sizes and Power is about in hypothesis testing. Any student who has had Stat 101 should find this a handy guide to interpretation. I recommend it for anyone from the undergraduate level on up who needs additional material to understand these concepts.

Bill Bryson could write anything at all and I would read it. I bought this on sale and I was completely informed that he wrote the book as a PR piece for CARE, the charity organization. The first chapter/sample was typical wry witty Bryson writing, but the resulting chapters were not so much a travelogue for Africa, but examples of the good that CARE has done in the region and soft-pedaled pleas for donations. Evidently even the proceeds of the purchase of this book go directly to CARE. Seems admirable and the it does seem a worthy charity. About a third? of the book is an excerpt of Bryson's next book, describing the history of early English architects which I found dry and not that interesting until the final pages on the history of English furniture and the various woods used in ancient times.

I love Bryson's books; that's why I was so disappointed with this slender volume.On a Kindle, the actual diary takes up only 50%; the rest of the book is taken up with an excerpt from one of his other books, a book I had already read.I am glad I got this book for only $1.99; I don't mind the proceeds going to CARE. I celebrate that, and that's the only reason I'm not returning it.Now, how could it have been better?? He traveled with a photographer. Why were there no photos in this book? Include some photos of his travels through Africa with the CARE organization. Now THAT would've made this book even better. A chronological journey of words and photos through Africa.Last of all, it ended so abruptly, with a, "Well, that's the end of this diary..." Very disappointing.So, if you can get it at the reduced price, go for it, or if you don't mind making a larger contribution to CARE, buy it at the full price.Hmmm....I wonder if I can write this off as a tax deduction as a charitable contribution.LOL and JK, everyone.

Once again, Brill Bryson has brought to life an area most of us will never see. And in this case, heartbreakingly brought to life. This is a small book – too small – I would have liked it to be at the very least twice the size it is – but it’s large enough to give the reader an idea of what life is like for our fellow earthlings in a part of the country much in need of help, of people just like you and me who are hopeful and love life even though it might be a life most of us would consider harsh and unreal. The proceeds from this book go directly to Care International, not to a government agency inhabited by people with empty pockets who are more than willing to fill them with money meant to help others live a better life, money meant to help people work toward making their village and their lives work better for them. Buy this book. Read this book and then buy more copies. Give them away or put them away and advise others to buy copies. To think every cent from this book goes to help an actual, honest organization dedicated to helping people make their own lives better is beyond admirable. Just think, you can be entertained, educated and helpful all in one fell swoop.

Let me start by telling you that I am a huge Bryson fan. This book is a brief diary of some travels in Africa where he was working along with some representatives of CARE. Like all of his travel books, it is informative, funny, and poignant. His description of a nearly ill-fated trip in a light plane is hilarious and terrifying at the same time. Reading this book will give you an accurate sense of the problems encountered by Africans in their efforts to improve their lives. It is, of course, my own fault that I didn't read the details concerning Bill Bryson's African Diary. Had I realized it was only 49 pages long - in total, roughly the length of two chapters in a typical Bryson book - I never would have made the purchase.Instead of getting the usual engaging and charming detailed minutiae of a Bryson book, we get what is largely long captions for photos taken by his co-author and sweeping generalizations about one of the world's most unknown, misunderstood and important continents. My bad perhaps. I didn't realize this was a publicity stunt for Care charities. That's fine. Just didn't know so it's a very slim book - not a full-sized book. So you won't want to pay too much for it used!

I love Bill Bryson and find his writing entertaining, informative, and sincere. While the intentions behind this book are worthy it is clearly neither a true diary nor comparable to the rest of his catalogue. It is surprisingly short -- only about 49 pages and appears to be merely an afterthought or hastily written magazine article turned into a book. I consider a "Short History of Nearly Everything" and "A Walk in the Woods" among my favorite books of all time. So on a recent flight in Africa I thought this book would make great reading to pass the time. It was way too short and left me unsatisfied. There are hints of Bryson's normal eloquence and wit along with his keen powers of observation. But mostly this reads like a pamphlet. Download it cheaply on a Kindle but I don't recommend buying the hardcover version at this price regardless of the charity to which the money goes.

The Canoe Atlas of the Little North is an amazing book covering N.W. Ontario's traditional canoeing routes. It’s a beautiful over sized 13.5”x 16” gem of a book. There are drawings, pictures or maps on most every page. It provides both an overview of historical canoe routes, geology, vegetation, wildlife, land use as well as descriptions of many canoe routes. The 1:250,000 scale maps are much too large for navigation but are helpful with general route planning. We are summer residents near Kenora and there is little information on the vast and remote area of lakes and rivers north of Hwy 17. The book is an amazing and wonderful source of information. It is a magnificent book and a truly amazing resource for this beautiful, secluded and largely inaccessible area.

This masterpiece was obviously a labor of love for the authors. The sheer amount of waterways described is astounding and makes the numerous long canoe trips I have taken in the Little North and beyond seem trivial in comparison. Because of the sheer size of the region covered, the maps are necessarily of small scale, but these are of immense value in identifying routes that include everything from the major waterways used by early traders, native peoples, and modern-day paddlers to obscure, height-of-land routes and tiny waterways known almost exclusively to native folks living in the area.The authors, knowing that no one person could ever paddle or know every waterway in the Little North in many lifetimes, wisely tapped the knowledge of many local native people, as well as a wide variety of recreational paddlers who have paddled the region over the decades.As valuable as the maps are, the pages of info on the region's human and natural history are also extremely informative, and provide great reading even for those folks who may never travel in the Little North.

The cover had some small dents in it that although do not make it un unusable do detract from its aesthetic value.

This is the best overview of canoe tripping in the Little North of Canada. I appreciate the authors' willingness to share their collective knowledge of the area through detailed descriptions, artwork, and pencil sketches. I have certainly added a some locations to my "Bucket List".

I have paddled my share of the Little North. The book takes me back. The illustrations are wonderful. I have been some of those places. The maps are well detailed. I have been on many of the lakes and portages. The atlas is invaluable for those who canoe.

Canoe routes of the Little North is an excellent document for the serious student of Ontario's canoeing history and culture. It is a must have for anyone interested in understanding traditional canoeing routes and connections. The early pages give a great overview of the topography and how it has shaped the travel through the area. The bulk of the book is devoted to 1:250,000 scale maps of the entire Little north area with emphasis on the connecting links from route to route. I highly recomend this atlas for those interested in learning more about this area or considering a canoe trip in this remote region.

I bought this atlas as a special birthday gift for my husband - he's from Sioux Lookout and LOVES the north... canoeing... hunting... etc... he also loves to pour over maps. We live further down south at the moment - very far away from the North and he about had tears in his eyes reminiscing on all his adventures up north and even dreaming about future excursions with our kids. Highly recommended... very detailed maps. I was a little disappointed that there were no scenery pictures - instead they had pencil sketches/drawings.

I started my study of the Buddha's teachings with the Middle Length Discourses.I recommend to start with that collection before moving to this collection of the Long Discourses. Since all of this came from an oral tradition and was not written down for hundreds of years after the passing of the Buddha, it stands to reason that the shorter more simplistic discourses might be more accurate with less embellishment and closer to the reality of the Buddha.

Repays endless study. I started reading this book 15 years ago, and I still pick it up and read formerly unread parts, as well as re-reading parts I've already read. It may not be for everyone, but I love it. The book consists of word-by-word accounts of lessons given by the Buddha himself. There are several thousand pages of these, in this book and others. For years I thought that Buddhism was something mysterious that you had to intuit the meaning of. I thought hardly anything was directly known of the man himself. I was wrong on both counts. This is a complex book, hundreds of pages long, but it is the first book in the series of books that traditional Buddhists consider their "Scriptures." For someone who wants increased knowledge about the Buddha and his ideas, this is a great starting place. But, I must admit, it takes patience and study - though they are amply rewarded over time.

While dense, this translation has an excellent introduction, profoundly useful notes and references throughout. As a beginner at understanding the concepts of buddhism, I found this honest and comprehensive translation of the Digha Nikaya of the Pali canon to be a very useful way to learn a lot more. While I still feel I don't understand a great deal about buddhism and the points made by the buddha, but it's only a quarter of the canon and I've only read through the text once so far.

Well written and translated! This is one of the few Nikayas not translated by Bhikkhu Bodhi, so when purchasing it I wasn't sure what to expect. Maurice Walshe does just as fantastic of a job translating the Digha Nikaya as Bhikkhu Bodhi does on well almost every other Nikaya! I would highly recommend to someone interested in the stories of the Buddha and the guidelines of the Dhamma.

The Digha Nikaya is a gem and Maurice Walshe is the gem cutter who brings out the brilliance in a masterful translation. His choice of words and tone are inviting and pleasant. Of all the Nikayas in the Wisdom Publications catalog the DN is the easiest to read. Walshe trims away much of the repetition and presents this important work in a concise fashion that flows from beginning to end.

This large chunk of the Pali canon, in its recent translation, is full of startling revelations and details and wisdom. Right up there with the Christian Bible for must-reads in a modern world. Better IMO to read this near-to-the-source translation than a lot of the stuff online about Buddhism, which has morphed itself in strange ways from this original material. The Buddha was an awesome being with superior insights, compassion, and clarity of thought, and it all still rings through in these discourses. Highly recommended.

I purchased the entire English and Pali NIkayas. I could not have been more pleased with these purchases. The print and binding quality are excellent. The teachings are wonderful. The annotations, which are plentiful, are beyond helpful. I recommend the Nikayas to anyone who is interested in the Dhamma.

Yep! If you have a real practice.. almost all the nikayas should be read..Lots of the most important suttas are in the one - I can't speak about the translation as I can't read Pali and never read the original palm leaves - but it is true good dhamma.

Very pretty, but there is no story. Don't buy if you don't want to make up your own story for each page. It's the story if a girl asking her size in relation to random things of various sizes. Who is she speaking to? That for the author to know and you to make up.

My daughter who is small for her age seems to like this story. I like that it is in both Russian and English so she can hear and enjoy the story in both languages. I wish there were more books published this way in two languages.

Short book, but good message for kids and nice to have translation immediately next to it. Vocabulary is small in scope though and not necessarily basic. I was hoping to find something with more length and teaching applicability.

Fun

I gave "я маленькая?" 5/5 stars because its a very simple, yet fun read. The illustrations are vibrant and full of color. I would definitely recommend this book to any Russian language beginner.

for unknown reasons this book causes my Kindle Fire HD to hang up on frozen black screen with flashing phrase "no annotations"! very scary. wish Amazon would investigate.
