This book covers a very broad subject that is music and sound healing. Some chapters are very "mystical" (ch. 9 Music Cosmologies and the Inner Sound) and often open to debate, and others a very scientific (ch. 2 The Process of Physical-Psychological Hearing) and hard to grasp. So at points it can be very abstract and even subjective and at other very specific and objective. The overall approach by the author is scientific, even when he writes about subjects that he might even be a bit skeptic like giving specific western note names to planets and zodiac signs or the musical notes related to each one of the chakras. The result is that you end up trusting McClellan's writing but also you realize how speculative music healing can be. At the same time it is a very interesting subject and quite relevant to modern and alternative medicine tendencies (i.e. singing bowls used by oncologist Mitchell Gaynor to treat cancer). Sound therapy has a significant potential in helping improve our health but it needs still more research and investigation, this book is definitely one of the places to start: It is both accessible to the layman and can be used as a reference book by the professional.The book is well documented and has a good bibliography, but it is lacking an index and that would very important specially when used as a reference book. The book was first published I believe in 1991, and it is starting to feel dated, this shouldn't stop anyone from reading it, but this fact makes it difficult to track some of the examples or experiments that are mentioned in the book, like the music by composer Sam McClellan, searching the name on the Internet will show very scarce results. In addition to this, even finding information about the author has been difficult for me. In a time when almost any information is easy to track down this can be a little frustrating. I read this book after reading "The Power of Sound" by Joshua Leeds, that book on the other hand has a website with links to most of the subject that are mentioned in the book! This definitely helps track new discoveries. BTW, The Power of Sound seems to be very closely modeled after this book.Clearly a seminal book in the subject and one that I foresee myself reading more than once.

Being a musician who not only studies the arcane and spiritual aspects of music, but also puts it into practice, I have high standards by which I judge books that profess to describe these matters. Most such books are, sadly, either designed for the most elementary teachings, or are utter nonsense.I found McClellan's book to be a refreshing exception. There is a great deal of very useful and practical information within. Yet it's still comprehensible to the layperson.

I have read dozens and dozens and dozens of books and articles on the subject over the past 10 years. I highly, highly recommend this book. It is profoundly wholistic and a true gift, intellectually and intuitiviely.

I did not finish this book due to the fact that I found it difficult to follow and very slow reading.

Because our ear bones vibrate from the time before we are born until we die, what we hear and how we hear are important. Sound can add to the quality of our life and the life of the planet. It's as if the universe is one big orchestra and every vibration contributes to the music. By adding to the harmony of the music, we can add to universal health.In The Healing Forces of Music, McClellan explains the basis of sound in scientific terms and shows how sound has been used in various times and cultures for healing. He demonstrates many principles for understanding our own inner resonance, and how to connect with the power within to heal.McClellan shows how our voice unites body, mind and spirit, and has properties that can increase our sensitivity to internal resonance and healing. Voice can also help remove obstacles-such as emotional stress and negative mental attitudes-that make our energy stagnant. Music can also be used in healing to quiet the patient, to help concentration and to facilitate the expression of emotions. McClellan presents a variety of techniques for working with sound and breath, from the use of relaxation to chanting vowels and ancient mantras."The first requirement of learning the process of healing is to experience the effect of various pitches on your own body." Finding your own natural voice or note is very therapeutic. McClellan tells a story of an old Armenian man who played one note on his cello day after day. His family, driven to distraction by the sound, told him that other musicians played different notes and created melodies. The old man replied that all the others were still searching for "the right note" whereas he had already found it.The discipline of music can influence us spiritually and create a meditative atmosphere. "The slower the rate [that?] individual sound events pass through our consciousness and the greater the periods of silence between them, the slower our sense of time becomes.... As a parent educator who works with families who have children with special medical needs, as well as a mom of two children with cystic fibrosis, I was very interested this resource. Don Meyer and SibShops is well-known throughout the pediatric medical world. This book, although an older copy (2000), did not disappoint.Chapter 1 was my favorite and most generally useful. The authors discuss what it's like to have a brother or sister with special needs. They talk about: friends, unselfishness, anger, accepting differences, guilt, jealousy, over involvement, understanding, embarrassment, pride, loss, maturity, worry, and loneliness. Each segment starts with a personal story that will help readers relate to the subject being discussed. The authors offer ideas and suggestions for handling the situation appropriately such as using I-statements for expressing feelings.The bulk of the book, Chapters 2-6, includes a very basic description of the specific types and causes of disabilities. The only negative about this version is the slightly dated material in regards to the details of some of the disabilities. Research is changing so rapidly in some areas that it's hard to keep up so be sure to share the changes, particularly the positive changes, with your children.Chapter 7 provides a basic explanation of laws, programs, and services. The final chapter, 8, talks about concerns for the future and the role a sibling may play in a disabled child's life.The language level of this book is written for older children- a mature 10-year-old could handle it. And let's face it, many siblings with a special needs sib are mature beyond their years. This is also a good, basic resource to help parents understand what their well child may be experiencing. I highly recommend this book along with Meyer's other stellar gem, "Views From Our Shoes," which addresses the needs siblings of people with special needs have.This book lends the voice of hope, confidence and clarity to the experiences many people whose siblings with special needs have. It not only sheds light on many questions that often crop up, it also provides a safe forum to explore any and all sibling related issues.I like the way Meyer respects his readers' intelligence. It is so critical, in fact paramount for people to be informed about the special needs their siblings have. That is a good way to foster honest relationships and inclusion within the family. That also promotes acceptance of the members who have special needs.Meyer's book serves as a medical, legal and educational advocate. It provides much needed information about services in these areas. I especially liked the part where people are strongly encouraged and rightfully so to make provisions for their children with special needs and to keep the other children without special needs informed of these decisions. People with special needs are vital members of their respective families and each person impacts upon the lives of others. That is still another reason why it is so crucial to have frank, open discussions with all the family members so as to keep the lines of communication open and to prevent secrets and fear. The fear of the unknown and the lack of communication causes problems and helps no one.I wish this book had existed a generation ago! I can't recommend it highly enough and it is a book for everybody, parents; all children; educators; medical professionals and the world at large. I love this book!

Father Michael has done an amazing job with this book and it is partly because the Holy Spirit guided him in completing this book. If you find Consecration with Louis de Montfort a bit dry and too theological, this is the best alternative! We have also bought DVD with Father Mike's talk for each of your weeks reading. If you are truly committed to Consecrating yourself to Jesus through Mary, this book is definitely the best resource to prepare you for the new Glorious Morning that will come after your Consecration. I have experienced divine peace of knowing that Mary is always by my side guiding and leading me on the right path towards heaven, giving Her protection against satan and his temptations - I have found victory over one addiction that has been hunting me down for all my life and I know that it is Mary's help since She wants me to be a clean temple of the Holy Spirit and have a pure heart so that Jesus may rest in it.

I really liked the layout of the book. Because I work in the evening and homeschool my kids in the morning I have very little free time. This book allowed me to read the section for each day in the morning so at any time throughout the rest of the day I could think more about it. Though each days reading is short it is meaty enough to dwell on throughout the day.I didn't honestly expect to feel any different after completing the consecration but I do have a greater sense of peace. It is one of those things you have to experience for yourself to fully appreciate.

I consider myself a devout Catholic, and have done the St. Louis de Montfort 33 Day Consecration many years ago using the classic de Montfort spiritual writings. This book is able to be used in class form or privately. My husband and I did it as part of a class at our parish. We were greatly edified and uplifted. The daily meditations, readings and prayers are rich with the writings of the four saints used for this book: St. Louis de Montfort, St. Teresa of Calcutta, St. John Paul II, and St. Maximilian Kolbe. I learned a lot of fascinating things about each of these saints lives that I did not know.A note: be sure to buy the companion workbook that goes with it. It's pricey, but my class didn't use it for everyone, only the teachers. When it was my week to teach (each of us took one of the four weeks) I realized that the whole experience would have been much richer and spiritually deeper if all the class members had worked through the workbook and meditated on the exercises in the workbook.

I'm only about halfway through this DIY devotional preparation for Marian consecration and I am blown away by the simplicity, the elegance, and the truly transformative words Mr. Gaitley has strung together, let alone the earth-shattering truths behind the them. The daily devotionals are short enough to be taken care of well inside 15 minutes, and I found myself hard pressed to put the book down-- I wanted to read more! Gaitley recommends starting the 33 days so that the final day(s) are on or at least close to a Marian feast, so I'm looking forward to the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes on Feb. 11!

Binding did not hold together past one week of use.

Compelling and enjoyable, authors have a great tone. Favorite book of 1L year.

The casebook is pretty standard, I will say though my version had tons of highlighter and writing. It may have been through several people. I can't complain too much since I bought it for only $40 and the new price is like $150 or something. FYI there is a casenote brief that accompanies this book...I highly recommend, then you won't really even need to the buy book!

They call him the Faulkner of crime fiction, but he's that and more. No one can plot AND create characters AND produce atmospherics AND ponder significant themes and ideas the way he can. Most of all, he's amazingly consistent, so that comparisons between the novels or attempts to rank the novels are always much more a function of taste than objective fact. PEGASUS DESCENDING is fabulous. Clete is in full tilt mode, Dave is just as we like him, moving between the ultra-contemplative and the ultra-violent, the latter following logically from the former. This is the book of the summer and probably, the year.

Burke is is kind of mystery-thriller writer who makes the likes of Harlan Coban and Dan Brown look like the absurd hacks they are. Burke's plots are complex and credible (within the confines of the genre, of course, where pistol whippings, murders, etc. are par for the course), his characters rich, his dialogue pitch perfect. I've read all the Robicheaux novels. There's a similarity to the themes (corrupt old money allies with greed and avarice in the form of the mob or other shady characters, like televangelist hucksters) but the plots and characters are complex and well-crafted enough to keep each of them unique. The Billy Bob Holland books of Burke's are also terrific, in fact I prefer them. But this is just what great, popular, suspend-your-disbelief writing is like.

James Lee Burke never fails to deliver excellence. All of his Dave Robicheaux novels are beautifully crafted, well-delivered portraits of a man troubled by his past, living (mostly) in exquisitely-described New Iberia near New Orleans, full of amazingly vile bad guys and complex good folks. Creole Bell is no exception. It's a great story, and Burke's luminous descriptions of the bayous, bays, and backwaters of Louisiana are worth the read all by themselves. This particular story is as much about Dave's best friend Clete as about Dave, and it presents interesting history on the two men and their family members. The insights into the nature of evil, the weaknesses of the human animal, and long lessons of life captivate me every time. I can never put down a James Lee Burke book--it always gets read in one sitting. He's a good late-night companion. One of my all time favorite authors, and another stellar book.

I'm a huge Burke fan and have first editions of most of his novels. His use of language, his manner of putting words together to create images that linger is simply unsurpassed by any other living American author, but I have to say that this one wasn't up to his usual magic. Louisiana stays just as fascinating (though tarnished a good bit with time, pollution and drugs) but the characters seemed more shallow or flawed. Clete the enigma is simply past the age of lusting after young women--or should be . Dave is focused too much on his alcoholic past. Too many characters with too many stories/plots get convoluted in what would have been a fine story with fewer of them intertwined. And I missed the mysticism that floats through some of his other novels. His novels are still better than the Connelly's or Coben's out there, but just not up to his usual.

This series is one i never forget . I've been , briefly to Louisiana , it's beautiful but I don't think I'd want to live there but when you see it through Dave Robicheaux 's eyes it calls to you .. His love for his wife , his best friend Clete and Sheriff Helen I a beauty all in its own . Mr..Burke finds a way to make you understand and empathize with the kind of people you would shy away from . Poetic justice at its finest

JLB is an amazing writer. HIs descriptive language is wonderful. The stories always have twists and turns so that it is difficult to predict the final outcome. The characters come off the pages at you so that you feel that you have known them for a long time. You feel like you are there when he describes New Iberia or Montana. I hate it when the last page is turned. But then I can't wait t for the next JLB masterpiece to come out - no matter whether it's in Montana or New Iberia. I know it will be hard to put down.

After reading some of the other reviews, I still feel drawn to JLB and Dave and Clete. Sure, he's pushing it with the "aging hero thing", but his writing is fluid, poetic, violent and wonderful. Having lived in La. all my life I can say for certain that he nails it. His words come off the page in clear, vivid color. I can smell the humid, musty leaves. Taste the Cajun and Creole food and hear the sounds of the swamp. This book was a bit different than the other Robicheaux stories, but that's what makes it so great. My favorite is "Jolie Blon's Bounce". Creole Belle is a bit more colorful in it's language and the violence is amped up a bit more than some of his previous D.R. stories. If I were to critique it, I'd say that Molly takes a huge backseat to all the other characters. Bring her to the fore again. Politically, Burke/Robicheaux and I differ. Religiously, we do not agree. He paints all non-Catholics as hacks. We're not. And I'd love to read a prequel or two, or three. Give us a look at the making of the Bobsey Twins. Go back in time to when they were young and just coming home from Nam. Let us see them in NOLA, walking a beat, getting wasted, and kicking a__. Whatever he does, I'll still read it. I can't seem to give it up and wait for each installment, impatiently.

I'm not impressed. I've had a lot of textbooks and the material is over elaborated. It is almost like the chapters are elaborated more than necessary to make the book longer. It also is very opinionated and it feels like the author just wanted to be done with it.

My only fault with the book is that it does not offer any audio accompaniment. Would have been nice addition as I spend a great deal of time in the car, working full time, often overtime while going to school, and raising 3 kids. Time management is the ultimate win when you are already stretched very thin.

Excellent book that explains why the health system in USA is so complicated, expensive, and ineffective. Does an excellent job of describing what healthcare should do, and compares USA with other countries where healthcare actually works. It is not naïve when it assess other countries solutions as not necessarily applicable to USA, but takes the better ideas, and gives some hope.

This is a textbook and what was required for my economic class. I am not an economics major but it is a bit wordy and redundant and some of the chapters are long and boring at times. How can anyone write a review about a textbook? You buy them to read for your class so that you can answer your discussion board smartly.

Needed this for school. Good Book, Healthcare Administration major, helped simplify finance and economics.
