The genius of an architect who made beautiful and functional homes out of inexpensive materials is celebrated in Rural Studio: Samuel Mockbee and an Architecture of Decency. The book showcases work Mockbee (1944-2002) undertook in Hale County, Ala., where he recruited architecture students to help design and build free homes for impoverished residents. Andrea Oppenheimer Dean, a former executive editor at Architecture magazine, and photographer Timothy Hursley, an architectural photographer who has been documenting Rural Studio for nine years, present 132 color and 12 b&w photos of the warm, modern homes (which often incorporate recycled and natural materials like tires and hay bales) and discuss them with Mockbee, his students and the home owners. It displays, for the first time in book form, the accomplishments of one of the most celebrated architectural studios in America, the Rural Studio, led by Samuel Mockbee of the Auburn University School of Architecture. Mockbee ran this studio for ten years until his tragic death from leukemia last year at the age of 57, a year after winning a MacArthur genius award. His students and associates created some of the most interesting and innovative architecture in the United States by serving the humblest needs of some of the poorest people in the most neglected counties of Alabama and Mississippi. About a dozen houses, churches, playgrounds, pavilions, and community centers are represented here in elegant photographs by Hursley, the unofficial photographer of the studio, and in concentrated prose by Dean, a former executive editor of Architecture magazine. This book is written in such a way that anyone can read and understand the purpose behind the development of Rural Studio. Auburn University was well known nationally before two professors, initially Samuel Mockbee being the one to have the insight for the program, and then fellow Auburn professor D.K. Ruth,developed this awesome program that put Auburn University's College of Architecture on the map internationally. These men had a vision to not only be able to give to a very impoverished area of Alabama much needed facilities, but to also allow students the unique opportunity to be able to actually design and do all the building themselves of what they designed in this area of Alabama, about 50 miles northwest of Selma, Alabama. I am quite partial to this book (and the recent one written in 2014 regarding the programs's 20th anniversary), due to having a daughter who spent a full semester her sophomore year and then many weekends during the following summer of 2009 designing and completing the building of an unbelievable home for a very fortunate family. In the process, my daughter learned to do everything from laying hardwood floors to bricking to installing electricity and plumbing to building a roof, and much much more. She then was quite fortunate to be chosen to do her thesis project at Rural Studio, as being selected to be able to do the fifth year thesis project at Rural Studio is quite an honor. She and three young men from her class are in process of putting final touches on a 5100+ square foot Boys and Girls Club for West Alabama, in particular for the town of Greensboro, Alabams. The book does a fabulous job of showing the beginning of the Rural Studio program with Mockbee's dream so well described and what students accomplished during this time. I defintely give the book 5 stars and would give it more if I could. A super book for the coffee table to share so others will be aware of such an unique program!

Its honest to the bone. Good architecture, good pictures, and simply good social efforts. Thats the whole book. Showing with honesty and integrity the efforts made by everyone in the rural studio.It doesn't have floor plans (im guessing there is a point in all these designs that somethings cant by put down in paper and other you just have to adjust) but the rest is perfect. Very honest, showing the people (the whole point of architecture) and the initial situation and the final product.Love the book, very inspiring.

Exciting book for anyone, especially the architect that wants to give back to society. As an architecture student, each reading of this book reminds me why I got into architecture. Architecture is a loving and sensual profession, especially when used the way the Rural Studio has.

This is a beautiful, intriguing, and inspiring book. The story and visual wonders alone plead for someone to do a great documentary film on this man, his mission, his artistry and his ingenuity. Ken Burns, where are you? Here is your next PBS-TV award-winning program on American history.

Don't get me wrong: this little book of photographs --and it is little (8" x 8" square)-- is quite lovely. Personally I would like for it to be larger in format...and yet Saul Leiter's work is in itself quiet and understated, and therefore the book's small size seems to reflect something important about the artist and his aesthetic.HOWEVER, if you are at all concerned about such things, or a serious collector of photography books, you should know that amazon.com is NOT currently selling 2008/First Editions (as described in both the "Book Description" and "Product Details" areas above). The 2008 First Edition of this Steidl book sold out long ago, and what is currently shipping is the 2013/Fourth Printing edition of the book. I tried to bring this to the attention of Amazon.com staff via their customer service channels, but they seem incapable of understanding the crucial difference between a "First Edition" and a "Fourth Printing," and have therefore neglected to change the product information here on the site. Consider yourself warned!

This is a classic selection of Saul Leiter's color work. Absolutely wonderful, gorgeous photos. The quality of reproduction and layout is excellent. I am very happy with this book. I was not so happy with the seller "SuperBookDeals" that leads you to believe that the book is in stock, has "shipped" but in reality doesn't get actually shipped until about 3 weeks later. SuperBookDeals is very misleading as you can see if you review its feedback.

Had no expectations when ordering this book - but am very pleased I did. This is theideal small reference book with photos that are challenging in the sense that theyclearly 'make their own rules' for that time- creative and visually appealing, Colours are well reproduced and imagine it is a bookyou would return to often.

This is a review for the 2014 reprint. This is hands down one of the best photography books I own. Saul Leiter is an amazing photographer and the quality of this book is fantastic. If you are thinking about buying the self-titled book buy this one instead. Steidl always produces excellent products.

This book is simply wonderful. Saul Leiter is genius, and his work here is unparalleled. Stedil's reproductions are everything we have come to expect from the outstanding publishing house. Leiter 's color work is like viewing a surreal painting taking us back to another time period.

Our photography club ([...]) begins it's meetings with an educational series of photographers; one "legacy" and one "contemporary". Saul Leiter was a legacy shooter featured a few months ago so I picked up this book. Not a disappointment at all. I look through this book a few pages at a time before bed and I've looked through it two or three times now. These images are in one sense voyeuristic in that Leiter uses window reflections & other distortions to capture these images rather than point the camera directly at his subject. One reviewer notices that this gives a layered look to his images and he's right. This is a great book for opening a photographer's eye to new compositional possibilities and a possible expansion of style. Highly recommended.

A great book to own to see images that aren't necessarily 5k monitor sharp, but have soul.....

Saul is an amazing talent and his colour work is showcased beautifully in this compact volume. The size strikes a nice balance between size and comfortable handling and the printing is top notch.

Santa hit it just right with this book! My tractor fanatic son loves this book, and I even learned a little bit about farming while reading it! The book rhymes and the illustrations are great! I definitely recommend for any tractor loving boys!

We saw this book featured on Top Gear as the "fifty shades of grey for men". Great illustrations and catchy story for the young ones.

Had to buy it for my son after seeing Richard Hammond read it on Top Gear. Great book for any small mid or television presenter.

My 3 year old grandson loves this entire series of books! Perfect length as far as reading time, and my son in law says they are very accurate!

My Grandson just turned 3 & he has most of the Tony Mitton series of books. His favorites are Tough Trucks & Dazzling Diggers. He seems a little bored & distracted with this one .... I think he'll like it better when he's a little older.

My son loves this whole series of books. We received 2 for a Christmas gift and have purchased nearly all of the others since. They are thin, paperback books so not appropriate for little ones who will tear pages but my 2 1/2 year old does great with them. I love the rhyming and cute, colorful pictures.

My 2 year old son loves these books and is always wanting to read them again.

I did not like the part when she is talking about his family, and she presents herself like she is not from the Dominican Republic, like all those years outside make her surprise of everything that she sees in DR or Haiti. She is Dominican, why so much surprising!!!! Plus she born in a town, not even in a city. Anyway, the book is good reading.!!!

This diet is full of common sense and I have lost weight by following the guidelines. It is easy to follow with lots of veggies, sensible proteins and cutting out processed foods, white flour and sugar.There are some errors in the book though. In the first two week phase, you are supposed to avoid carrots (higher sugar content) yet in the first phase recipe section, the recipe includes carrots.A minor detail to be sure, but still, this is not the only example I've noticed and I am wondering who proofed/approved this and what other errors there may be. (Hey, if you are following something to the letter and the letters are wrong....not good)This is easier to follow than Atkins and allows "good" carbs and fats.This is not so much a "diet" as a way to eat well , enjoy your food and make good choices for life.I am learning to "eat to live" instead of "living to eat" and this is a help.

I did this diet in high school and the beginning of college where I lost over 60 pounds. I never gained it back! I've been stagnant for the past few years and want to lose a few extra pounds, so I'm going back!

After I purchased the South Beach Diet book I lost 25 pounds in 45 days. It surprised me too. My doc asked me if I was starving myself. I told him and another doc that i was just following the book's advice. Mostly eggs and meat to start. Got to get that protein. I also drank Ensure high protein drinks. The book came after two doctors recommended it. I'm way thru the first phase and now I can eat other foods and still eat out. I mostly have given up the bread and baked potatoes.This diet is working for me . Unbelievable.

If you're not careful, you might mistake this for a regular cookbook rather than a diet one. My wife, who is not on a diet, has been enjoying these recipes as well. There's a wonderful variety in here. The recipes are simple and easy to fix. I like how each recipe is clearly marked to indicate the corresponding phase. Some miss the mark, but the majority are right on target. There's a heavy emphasis on flavor.

This is a life changing book have lost 5 lbs in a week not even following the diet just cutting out the foods that he says we need eliminate in the1st Phase like White Bread & Rice, Honey, Sugar ect and eating the good vegetables and lean meat with a little fruit. I will be starting phase 1 assoon as I eat most of the few things I chose not to throw out such as fruit ect that will spoil. I have lost the weight around my waste asstated in the book. I am ready to loose weight and get healthy. I think this is a lifestyle of eating rather than a diet or a change of dietreally. The hardcover arrived today. I can see phase 1 as being a little restrictive but it only lastsTwo Weeks.

This is a very good diet if you have a lot of motivation. I have been fortunate that several people in my family and friend are also on this diet. My husband has already lost 25lbs in a month and I have lost 11lbs.The food is easy to eat maybe a little expensive and hard to find at times but good. I still have more to lose so I plan to stay on the diet for a while. Then there is a final phase to teach you how to eat the rest of your life.

I love this plan! It is more a lifestyle than a diet: it gives tips to change your eating habits for the rest of your life, without feeling hungry that was my big complain with other diets. It is well balanced and I got rid of high cholesterol after 2 months on this diet/exercise plan. I do not longer take cholesterol prescription since more than 3.5 years ago. I bought this book again because I gave my 2 ones as gift to other friends.

I am a little surprised Derek Alan Siddoway hasn't as yet become famous as sin. I mean, if admirers murmur names like Harry Potter or the Dragon's of Pern, surely there must be a lot more curious people out there to find out what the hulabaloo is all about.Yes, gryphons may be likened perhaps to the wonderful thread devouring dragons of Anne McCaffrey's world of Pern.No, I do not for one moment think the daughter of Soot, the blacksmith, is anything like Rowland's Harry Potter at all. Eva is no child prodigy of Fame able to wield unimaginable magic. She is instead a humble, blacksmith's daughter trying very hard to overcome her fears and make Soot proud of her.Too bad she does not know how special she really is. Too bad she does not know that she is due to become a legend in her own right. Too bad her real father never got to know her yet.But she made the most unusual friends in the most unusual fashion and places. Like a small gryphon, aptly named Fury, who is a little terror at the best of times.Now, if this is not enough for the stuff legends are made of, blame yourself. And whomever has not yet discovered that Derek Alan Siddoway is the name to trot out when you want to brag about epic new adult fantasy on par with the best in this genre.And while I am off for the next in series, enjoy this one!

This is fine for a first (I'm assuming) effort, and for young readers. The plot and characters were somewhat simple-minded, one-dimensional and easy to follow. The story would have been helped by careful editing. ("Blocked her site" should be "blocked her sight," for example.) And the author has trouble with pronouns (he, she, they): "The single fighter, wearing only leathers and a light cap, threw themselves at the other three. ... and the lone fighter raised their weapons in triumph."In addition, I was frustrated by the fact that the gryphons aren't actually featured much in the story. People keep saying, "They're not just beasts of burden," but they're certainly treated as such by this author, who doesn't describe them in any vivid, loving way. (With the "chick," I kept picturing a fat, awkward dodo-like creature.) The result is that the reader can't get very close. Their intelligence is nowhere evident. No magical communication occurs between them and their bonded riders. And what happens when a rider dies? What happened to the boy Danny's young gryphon when Danny was killed? What happened to Celina's gryphon [SPOILER ALERT] when she died? We don't know. Do they die too? Choose other riders? This author didn't care enough about the creatures to say. And I'm not sure how he defines the "bond" between gryphon and rider. I didn't see that described in the interactions here.This book was interesting enough to finish; but I won't go on to the rest of the series. Young readers will probably enjoy it; for them, it would benefit by having illustrations added.

A fun and engaging fantasy! One does not often come across stories solely about gryphons. But I greatly enjoyed this one! However, due to the unexpected (and entirely unnecessary) language, I can only give this four out of five stars. Regardless, I loved the characters, the story was -- as I said before -- engaging, and the plot rather intense. I want expecting the twist! All in all, it was very enjoyable.

The pacing feels rush after Eva arrived at the school. We didn't get much bonding moments with the characters or see more of the classes beside a small introduction of the land and fight scenes. The villain was obvious if you look closely. Despite all of that, it was a good read.

Volume 1 is the most developed of the three. However the plot is derivative and the characters other than Eva are shallow. For example we are told two things about Tahl: he is a leader and he is very handsome. We are never actually, shown his leadership; in fact he is by-passed at every turn, even by Eva. Apparently good looks is enough for Eva which makes their relationship more stereotypical than having any depth. The battle scenes, both large scale and individual are chaotic at best, often incomprehensible in detail. Eva is apparently able to develop into a sword weilding wonder in the space of about two years, able to best people her own age who have been training for about ten years. Although she has been working at Soot’s forge for many years we aren’t really shown how her strength is evidenced in any realistic way.The plot, storyline, and character development are lacking. I suggest reading Matt Heppe’s Orb series or even Miles Cameron’s books which are written for a more mature reader.

I’ve liked everything that Derek Siddoway has written up to this point, a lot. Then I started reading the Gryphon Riders series & it was so good I haven’t wanted to put them down. I read a Windsworn in one night & couldn’t wait to start Windswept. Action packed, well written & the attention to detail is awesome. Windsworn is some of the best reading I’ve done in a long time & so far I’m enjoying reading Windswept just as much. I can’t wait until the next ten books in this series comes out!!! Great job Derek, keep riding for the brand!!

I have been trying to learn about the Hadoop/NoSQL world for the last few months, and have found myself getting really frustrated at the lack of a source which presents a clear big picture. No matter where I looked, I was just overwhelmed by minutiae, and the arguments of zillion people advocating their own favorite new technology.No more! The authors of this book present a wonderful, accessible, product-agnostic introduction to the world of NoSQL. The book first covers the four major kinds of NoSQL databases (key-value, document, column family and graph) via a highly practitioner-oriented comparative study. It then goes into various scalability issues and trade-offs, including distribution models, CAP theorem and its implications, an introduction to Map-reduce and so on. This book has demystified much of NoSQL for me and made it seem quite common-sensical.If you are new to the Hadoop-NoSQL world, this is the book to start with before delving into any specific technology or jargon. I think that after this high-level introduction, a deep-dive using a book like 'Seven Databases in Seven Weeks' is a logical next step.

The authors state in the preface that the aim of this book is to give one enough information on whether NoSQL technology makes sense for a given project and if so which tool to explore in more depth. After reading through the book from cover to cover, I think the authors have achieved their goal. The first part of the book is about understanding NoSQL while the second is devoted to implementation. This book is very well written and it's quite an engaging read. Different data distribution models, consistency, transactions are all covered in significant detail in the first half of the book which is a major value add - anyone who has worked in an enterprise application environment can easily relate to the problems and proposed solutions as well as limitations of each. The second half typically focuses on one particular implementation in a given category of NoSQL and shares more detail on how to interact with it as well as when it is (and when it is not) appropriate to use a tool. The chapter on polyglot persistence shows some of the ways in which an organization can leverage multiple tools effectively at the increased cost of complexity, deployment and maintenance. Even though this book is about NoSQL, the authors include a chapter on Beyond NoSQL where file systems, event sourcing and other alternatives are discussed. The book closes out on selecting the tool for a given project by giving some ideas on how to do this while recognizing the immature nature of NoSQL field. This book is a great starting point for anyone with no background in NoSQL. For those who have some experience with NoSQL, the main value addition would be that the information as well as ideas on NoSQL are summarized in a single place.

This book does a good job of explaining NoSQL much better than any web site or blog I have read on the subject. The authors go into just enough detail to describe what NoSQL is, the problems it is designed to address, and how to make the tradeoffs between SQL and NoSQL in a real system.This is a short book: if you want an exhaustive reference, look elsewhere. The stated goal of this book in the preface is to provide a quick overview of NoSQL to include the four types of databases, the overall structure of each, their strengths and weaknesses, to an audience of software developers who understand how to design SQL database schemas and ORM mappings (i.e. you know how database tables correlate with program classes and objects).If you have at least a year of experience with SQL databases, ORM, etc. and need a primer on NoSQL, this is the book for you. If you need an exhaustive reference, detailed information, or an in-depth example of setting up an application with NoSQL, this is NOT the book for you. If you need a quick readme on NoSQL in general to get up to speed for a project, this book will be a good resource. It contains all the essential information and is a short, quick read.

This is, to my surprise, a really solid little book. TLDR; it covers what you need and introduces a mix of formal and common-usage terminology to help you ask the right questions to do something with the information. Highly recommended.Technology books are the bane of my existence - they're expensive, riddled with inconsistent quality of information, and usually out of date before they even reach print. This book is one of those rare exceptions. It clearly shows both academic integrity and has all the right hallmarks of practical usage and experience - and in around 150 pages gets you up to speed, an amazing feat of selective focus for a topic as potentially broad as this. As with quite a few of the Martin Fowler books, it reflects awareness of the industry and history of the technologies at play - useful for getting a flavor for why things are as they are - and Pramod Sadalage has done a good job putting this across.The material builds very quickly from general discussion (what is NoSQL, and what is it not) into defining a set of criteria you can apply (as an architect, technologist, or developer) to understand what might work for your projects and how to begin assessing the cost/benefit/risk associated. The rest of the book is dedicated to providing insight into the behavioral models and key concepts for taking advantage of each of the "NoSQL" options discussed - including where you might want to stick with good old relational database persistence.If you haven't played with NoSQL, are curious about it, or are hitting scalability issues with your database projects, this book provides a wealth of insight and ways to help get you up to speed with the ideas driving the movement. Don't expect to get a tour through the particular implementations of these databases - but from my reading this is more helpful than a hindrance.
