When I first read this little book a couple of years ago I thought that Subrata Dasgupta must be a genius to be able to see so clearly the essence of this strange science. I especially was helped by his viewing programs as "liminal artefacts" (with both an abstract and a material face). The recommendations for "Further Study" are mainly "classics" such as works by Donald Knuth, so you can see that this is not meant to be a pop level introduction to programming but an overview of a new science. The book actually uses the word "wisdom" at one point in referring to the goal of this science of the liminal and it seems to me that it is best appreciated by anyone who wants a keener, and wiser, understanding of what "computer science" means. I'm writing this review because I've started reading through the book for my second time and re-discovering that it's a great (little) book.

The book presents a good overview of computer science, but some parts are hard to read for a novice. There are some valuable discussions at the beginning and, especially, at the end of the book, but a lot of complicated terminology in the middle.

Too much definition of terms and little useful information.

Listen. My kid has a bit of a learning difference. He prefers pictures when reading and who doesn't. This is a great comic book style book that is true to the word of God book. It makes getting to know the bible stories fun, and sticks in the brain due to its comic book format. The kids love it and if that means they learn more about the word of God then I LOVE IT TOO! I would personally recommend it for ages 10 and up, right up to adult. A Great gift too!!

I used the books in this series as gifts the kids could choose in our Kids Club class and they LOVED them!!! Great way to keep the Word in their lives!

A gentle introduction to the concept of networks and related topics in graph theory and statistics. Very light on math (most formulas are relegated to footnotes), heavy on examples from a wide variety of fields, interesting trivia and wit. Barabási starts the book with a simple network model and gradually introduces enhancements to it, showing the adventages and limitations of each intermediary step. This book is a joy to read and it can help you get in the proper mindset to "grok" networks; however, it won't make you an expert in computer science or social media marketing. You should also be aware that it was published in 2002, long before the era of Facebook and web apps (the author, rather endearingly, calls web pages "documents" and capitalizes "Website") so adjust your expectations accordingly. All in all, a good pop-science book.

What it says is true and it is extremely informative (almost too much so) because each chapter is the same practically; and if you've studied much about networks or sociology at all, many of it is already secondary. Good book for people who want a lot of needless text.

This is neither Gladwell, Thaler, nor Kahneman. I hoped for a distillation of scientific discovery for an average guy. I had a minimal understanding of network science that drew me to the topic, and this book added no explicit insights to that understanding. It's poorly edited, and it may be outdated as other, newer books, individually, better describe relevant aspects, including network security, disease propagation, and so on.

This book describes the emergence of an important new area of science, and it's written by Alberto-Laszlo Barabasi, one of the pioneers and leaders in the field. The writing is clear and engaging, so the book should be fairly easy to read by general readers reasonably comfortable with science. Accommodating such a broad audience does limit the technical depth, but there's still plenty of detail, and the book has abundant endnotes which go into further detail and also link the book with the professional literature (pun intended).The systematic presentation of the book makes it fairly easy to summarize:(1) Many systems are complex, and thus are not amenable to conventional reductionism. Instead, complex systems typically involve networks.(2) The study of networks began with "simple" graph theory, and then progressed to random networks in which most nodes have the about the same number of links.(3) Real-world networks tend to be "small worlds" in the sense that the shortest path from a given node to any other node is typically only several links. This is the case even for networks with millions or billions of nodes.(4) Rather than being entirely random, real-world networks tend to display clustering, with "weak links" between clusters. These weak links, which may be random, are the key to making these networks small worlds.(5) Small-world networks tend to have a minority of highly-linked "hub" nodes which shorten the average path between nodes. More precisely, such networks tend to have a hierarchical scale-free structure (topology) which follows a power law with an exponent of 2 to 3, such that there are many nodes with few links and progressively fewer nodes as the number of links per node increases (again, hub nodes have the most links). (By the way, the ratings of this book roughly follow a power law distribution.)(6) Scale-free structure in networks is largely the result of a preferential attachment process in which well-connected and competitively fitter nodes have a greater ability to attract further links as the network grows ("the rich get richer"). If a single node has dominant fitness, a "winner takes all" effect can occur in which the network develops a star structure rather than a scale-free structure.(7) Unlike random networks, scale-free networks are robust against even a large number of random removals of nodes. This is largely because the minority of hub nodes keeps the network connected. However, targeted removal of several hub nodes (~5% to 15%) can cause a scale-free network to collapse (loose connectivity), thus making such networks vulnerable to attack. The problem is compounded if such networks are vulnerable to cascading failures.(8) Viruses, fads, information, etc. can readily spread in scale-free networks because there is no minimum threshold which the spreading rate needs to exceed.(9) Because the links in the Web are directed, the Web doesn't form a single homogeneous network, but rather has a fragmented structure involving four major "continents" and some "islands", and there is fragmentation within these continents as well.(10) Behavior of living cells is controlled by multiple layers of networks, including regulatory and metabolic networks. These networks typically have a scale-free structure with an average path length of about three. Across organisms, the hubs in these networks tend to be the same, but the other nodes (molecules) vary widely. This is why targeting drugs at hubs can be both effective and can have side effects (presumably, the key is to find and target hubs which are specific to disease states, if such hubs exist).(11) The economy is a network in which hub organizations tend to accumulate links as the network grows by absorbing smaller nodes through mergers and acquisitions.(12) Highly "optimized" organizations with a tight hierarchy tend to be less adaptive than networked organizations, and thus susceptible to failure.(13) Networked economies are susceptible to cascading failures, especially when the hubs become "too big to fail" (Barabasi's warning here was of course all too accurate).(14) Real networks tend to have a hierarchically modular structure, while still being scale-free.The only significant "negative" is that this book came out in 2002/2003, whereas network science has continued to develop since then. However, Barabasi has another book (Bursts: The Hidden Pattern Behind Everything We Do) coming out in just a few weeks, which should bring us up to date, and it makes sense to read "Linked" first, so that you can start at the beginning. Very highly recommended.

I found the book quite interesting. You don't need to be an expert math person to understand it. The book examines many types of networks such as webpages, citation networks, molecule delays, Airline Routing, Income Distribution, Popular Press Literature, Distance over which atoms communicate, Phase transitions in materials, and Experimental data. These are examples of Power Distribution and not Bell Curve distribution networks, as most people believe them to be. The author explains in detail how the different types of networks can be sensitive to deliberate forms of attack. It is interesting how the internet just expanded by its self and became organized in a way no one expected.

Very impressed with this book on how people, organizations and other things are linked. We have all heard of 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon, yet the author writes it is less than 3 degrees of Kevin Bacon. Using the internet to find the connections of networks, the studies have improved. The first study of the power of networking can go back to St Paul and the spread of Christianity. Later examples are the Air France Flight Attendant who spread AIDS, the many internet viruses and the 9/11 terrorists. Using these, how do we use our own networks? The fact is the power is actually not from our primary network, but our secondary network. The reason being is that our primary network has too much ego and history built in for much change, but the secondary network does not. While this book was written in 2002 and is probably outdated in some reagard (as much more data has obeen accumalted since), it is very fascinating and worth the read.

I wanted to find out what was discovered after Chaos Theory - complex systems, networks, and the implications of social media networks. I gave up on this book at the midpoint - what in UK we call, 'the bleeding obvious', and most of it from Hungary and Notre Dame, if you believe that. Sorry, but you did ask...

Its a great simple book to read, but rather dated. Due to modern day social media, the concept of linked through social means is already so baked-in to our lifestyles these days that the book just tells you what you already know. It would be good for people not already entwined in social media, but for younger people like me, the book comes off as dull.

I decided to take a chance and purchase this book New after reading all the negative reviews on here. I received the book today and it was exactly as I hoped. The text and all prints were included and wrapped together. I can see how some people would only get one or the other buying used as they are two separate books. But if you need the book and want to save yourself the headache of only getting a portion of what you think you’re getting then I STRONGLY RECOMMEND BUYING NEW!

Little did I know, the only thing this comes with is the blueprint portion and not the text part... apparently it's a set which I assumed would come together. So this is misleading and the description should be more informative

I ordered two set of this book, one for a fellow student. One came in without the full set, it is a two part book.Very troubling as now I am behind in class!If you do not want this to happen to you I recommend not to buy from this vendor!I needed this book today!Phyllis

Starting my second week of class. Our instructor asked us to pull out the prints this weekend and lay them flat in prep for our next class. When I opened the book with the prints I noticed both pockets have the same prints in them. The right side is supposed to be prints C-6 - C-40 instead it was the same as the left pocket M-1 - M9, A1 - A-8, B-1 - B-13, C-1 - C-5. This is so frusterating as I have class tomorrow with only half of what I need.

The Prints included are acceptable, but this only contains the prints and not the activity book you will need. I now have to go to my school's book store and purchase this book and the activity book in a set because that is the only way to get the activity book.

Got yobclass and realized that this book should come w the text book... Only received the blue prints. Now I can't find a copy if the text book. 😠😢

I recently lost a loved one and it was shocking and unexpected. Whiile we know this is part of life, it still causes tremendous pain and grief. This book was of great solace to me and I now keep it on my nightstand for evening reading and prayer. The author credits prayer with her recovery from a major illness and I do believe in the power of prayer. I highly recommend this book, even if you are not going through hard times. The prayers, passages, blessings and meditations are beautiful and offer great peace of mind. This is the best prayer book I have ever seen; simply wonderful.Buy one copy for yourself and one to give to a friend.

Honestly, sometimes fighting depression is just hard. It doesn't always make sense for me to be sad or upset or empty, I just am. But the prayers in this book help me to ground myself--and to learn something knew in the process. I may not practice all of the religions or spirituality activities covered in this book, but I was glad to discover prayers and thoughts from them while reading.

Prayers for Hard Times comforts me in these perilous times when it feels like the world around us is tumbling into chaos, and that which we held sacred, was in risk of being destroyed by divisiveness and the polarities are at heights unknown since WWII. In May 2015 I traveled to Israel to take Dr. Jack Beck's three-week biblical geography course at Jerusalem University College in Jerusalem. This course featured in-depth class lecture plus a lot of fieldwork at the sites we studied in class. I cannot recommend this course highly enough. Jack knows his stuff and communicates it well. Not only that, he is also a genuinely nice Christian gentleman.This eminently readable book reflects a good deal of his course’s lecture hall and onsite instruction. I bought ‘The Holy Land for Christian Travelers’ in August 2017 (Kindle version), and two months later I gave it a field test in Israel. My buddy and I flew to Tel Aviv, rented a car, and traveled all over Israel armed only with a road map, GPS, and Jack's book. Israel is a tiny country; you can travel border-to-border north to south in a few hours and west to east in even less time. In our eleven days, we pretty much went from Dan to Beersheba and from the Mediterranean coast to the Dead Sea--and many points in between. This book was of inestimable value as we traveled to the various biblical sites. I recommend reading it carefully in advance of your trip, underlining key thoughts for quick reference once you’re in the land.Anyone interested in knowing more about the land of the Bible and how it impacts biblical understanding MUST read ‘The Holy Land for Christian Travelers.’ Whether or not you ever make it to Israel, it will provide wonderful insights into the land where Abraham migrated, Isaac and Jacob lived, and David slew Goliath. You’ll be able to travel the coastal highway and the mountain ridge route where the ancient peoples journeyed. You can actually visit the area where Jesus spent most of his life, and where he did most of his ministry, and where He was crucified and rose again. I was so blessed by this book during my time in Israel that I plan to take my wife in a few months and, with Jack’s book, introduce her to “The Land.”

The best book I have read thus far in preparation to visit the Holy Land! We are Catholic homeschoolers, and this book is chock-full of educational information that brings the places together with the Bible in a visual way unlike other books, even those with more pictures. Though the Bible references do not coincide with our Douay Rheims Bible, we know what the author is referring to and can look the passages up on our own after reading his book. Thank you for including Catholic information, too, and providing a wholly Christian view of the Holy Land!

The content of this book wasn't what I expected from other reviews. It omitted a lot of fantastic sites in the Holy Land (maybe because they were not specifically Christian?) and just didn't seem to have much depth to it. Maybe try to see a copy at a library before ordering?

This book is a companion, to the Bible, as well as the perfect travel guide. I have bought two, for gifts, and they are easy to read, jammed packed with information that is factual and fascinating. I love the maps and all the time lines, throughout the history of the Bible, modern as well as historical. This book encourages the reader to book a tour, to go to the Holy Land, and for a person who is a novice at travelling, it even has all the steps and precautions, that one needs to prepare, to go to the Holy Land. The only thing is doesn't do is pack your suitcase for you. So thrilled I have a copy, as it brings my Bible to life, and I shall be buying all the books of John A Beck, because he is speaking from experience, and he can be trusted, to deliver an accurate account of his travel experiences in the Holy Land.

I am a travel agent specializing in tours to Israel so I've seen almost every travel guide to Israel available. This is one of the better travel guides I've seen. There are many aspects of this book that are excellent. Let me start with those.EXCELLENT:-Great size and very nicely laid out; easy to read-Love the blue highlights at the end of each site with information about the site such as directions, dress, fees, etc.-The maps and timelines are OUTSTANDING!-Excels in geography and climateLACKING:-There is minimal information for Trip Prep, prayer prep, Bible study prep, and general FAQ about Israel-There is so much fascinating information on the various cultures within Israel, the history of Israel and the Jewish people. Aside from a summary of the various civilizations that conquered Israel, this is practically non-existent.-The itineraries are what really threw me off. WAY too much in a day! If I had that much in each day, I'd lose business; my tour groups would be complaining and totally exhausted running from site to site without much time to process the site, take photos, or even look around.-I was surprised how many of the sites included in the itineraries were sites that probably less than 5% of tours visit or sites that second-timers might have time to see, like: Burnt House, Wohl Archaeological Museum, Tower of David Museum, Tisch Family Zoological Gardens???, Jericho on the same day as Masada, En Gedi, Qumran, and the Dead Sea (not possible), Ein Kerem, Neot Kedumim Park, Beth Shemesh, Beit Guvrin, Lachish, Hebron, Gezer, Samaria, Ashkelon, En Avdat, and it goes on and on!-Why include so many Catholic religious buildings on the Mount of Olives and Via Dolorosa?-Sites sorely missing that are, from my perspective, non-negotiable, for first visits: Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum, Friends of Zion Museum, Nazareth Village, boat ride on the Galilee, and... Genesis Land and Fountain of Tears if there's any extra time at allSo, I give a solid three-star review. But it is BEAUTIFUL!

Devan, Alpha expects to remain perennial bachelor runs a podcast. Ori, Omega spent career since school competing with Devan. They hired to co-host a cooking show and the fireworks seem to be the best part of the show. Is their animosity real or hiding deeper feelings? Devon helps Ori out in a 'heat' situation and their relationship 'jumps the shark'. Does enything come of the heat situation? How will they face each other the next day on the show? Can they find a way to get along? Like watching bickering teenagers! Continued great character & relationship development. Nice friends making appearances. Absolutely enjoyable story. Excellent series! I received an ARC from Booksprout to review this story.

I love this trope, and it was great to see that both Ori and Devan felt animosity against the other at the beginning of this book. I felt that we didn't get enough of their being enemies before they became lovers, but it didn't detract from the story.The one thing that I find a bit confusing about this whole series is how the characters in these books are all in the same pack, but the pack only very rarely seems to be in contact with each other.

Knot the Enemy is the story of Ori and Devan. They absolutely hate one another. Enemies and competitors to the end. But now they need to work together in a new show, Taste Buds. Devan is an alpha chef who has won awards for his cooking and runs a podcast. His life is all about his career and is in no hurry to find his fated mate or have children. Ori is an omega chef who has spent his schooling and career competing against Devan. He is intelligent but has a smart mouth and loves sparring with Devan. Their arguing was humorous and you could see they were perfect for one another. The addition of filming a show just added to the hilarity and drama. Plenty of emotions to go around in this story also. I always love the inclusion of former main characters and supporting characters. They always add good things to the story and let you catch up on where they are now. This whole series has been fantastic and I cannot wait for the last book. (Review with spoilers)New book in the series. I liked it, but not as much as the others (the third is still my favorite).Devan and Ori are old rivals who are forced to work together. Neither of them wanted to do it, but they accepted and discovered that the other was not as they believed, that they could get along, and that there could be more than friendship between them.I love the chemistry between them, and how they are surprised that they can have fun together.At the beginning of the book, I liked Devan better than Ori. Ori is too smug. But, as the story progressed, that changed. I liked Ori much better, and I disliked Devan. After their discussion (his discussion, because he didn't let Ori speak), I stopped liking him, for everything he said, for what he said, for how he hurt Ori with his words, and how he thought he enjoyed it. In the other books I did not get this impression of him being so cruel. Yes, he repents at once, and he thinks that, as a wolf, he won't hurt him anymore and won't break his heart again. But I think Ori forgives him too soon.I love Shane, how he talks to Devan, how he tells him not to lose the best that has ever happened to him. I hope he soon finds his mate.I loved seeing the other couples and their children.

i read this book as part of an arc program. This is the fourth book in the Howling Hills series. In this book, Devan is an alpha who is about to get his won reality show about visiting different restaurants and talking about the food. Devan is happy for the show, but when he learns the producers added his nemesis Ori to join him, he is not impressed. Ori is an omega and also trained as a chef with Devan. Devan and Ori competed with everything and Devan ususally won. Ori hated Devan and Knows they are going to disagree on everything. When Ori goes into heat the night before they are to film a big episode, Devan decides to help him out. Ori knows he has to have sex to stop his heat, or he won't be able to film the show. Both Devan and Ori are even more shocked to find out they are fated mates when Devan knots Ori. They hate each other, but fate seems to think they should be together, so they have to try and figure out how. I loved this book, i laughed at them. I loved Devan and Ori together. They had a love/ hate relationship but i think underneath it all, they really liked each other, but wouldn't admit it. Once they were mated, they had no choice but to admit their feelings. Another good one in this series.
