From the Author

This book is called Learning Agile because we really want you to learn agile. We've spent the last 20+ years working with real teams building real software for real users day in and day out. We've also spent the last 10+ years writing books about building software (including two very successful books in the O'Reilly Head First series about managing projects and learning to code). This experience has helped us find many different ways to get complex and technical ideas into your brain without boring you to death. We've done our best to take this material and make it as interesting and engaging as possible. We use narratives and illustrations, include key points and coaching tips, and answer many frequently asked questions that routinely come up when teams try to implement agile in the real world on their own teams—and all of these things can help you and your team learn agile quickly so that you can build and deliver better, more valuable software, and do it faster than before. Who we wrote this book for Do any of these scenarios describe you and your team? You tried an agile practice, but it didn't really work out. Maybe you implemented daily standup meetings, and now your team meets every day--but you still get blindsided by problems and miss deadlines. Or you started writing user stories and reviewing them with your team and stakeholders, but your developers still find themselves dealing with just as many last-minute changes to add extra features that continue to pop up. Or maybe your team tried to go agile wholesale by adopting a methodology like Scrum or XP, but it seems somehow "empty"--like everyone is going through the "required" motions, but your projects are only marginally improving. Or maybe you haven't tried agile yet, but you recognize that your team is facing serious challenges, and you don't know where to start. You're hoping that agile will help you with those demanding users who constantly change their minds. Each change your users make requires more work for your team, and leads to "duct tape and paperclips" spaghetti code solutions that make the software increasingly fragile and unmaintainable. It could be that your projects are simply controlled chaos; the primary way software is delivered is through long hours and personal heroics, and you think that agile may offer your team a way out. What if you're an executive who's worried that teams working on important projects will fail to deliver? Maybe you've heard about agile, but you don't really know what it means. Can you simply tell your team to adopt agile? Or will you need to change your own mindset along with the team? If any of those situations is familiar to you, and you want to improve how your team works, this book will help. We explain the agile methodologies: why they're designed the way they are, what problems they address, and the values, principles, and ideas that they embody. By giving you the "why" in addition to the "how," we'll help you to recognize the principles that apply to the particular development problems specific to your team, company, and projects. And we'll show you how to use that information to guide your choice of methodologies and practices. What we want for you: We want you to understand the ideas that drive effective agile teams, and the values and principles that bring them together. We want you to understand the most popular agile schools of thought--Scrum, XP, Lean, and Kanban--and how they can all be agile, even though they're very different from each other. We want to teach you specific agile practices that you can apply to your projects today--but we also want to give you the framework of values and principles that you'll need to implement them effectively. We want to help you understand your own team and company better, so that you can choose an agile approach that matches your mindset (or comes as close as possible)--but also help you and your team start to learn a new way of thinking that will help you become a more effective agile team.

For anybody who works in an Agile team or wants to help guide their team to becoming more Agile, I would recommend reading this book. I think the biggest selling point for me was that it actually describes the differences between the various Agile methodologies. With all the different Agile methodologies that exists (and I'm sure there's many more beyond the 4 described in the book), it's easy to feel like you're swimming in an ocean of buzzwords. Luckily, I think the authors recognize the importance of actually "showing" you what Agile looks like and have vignettes sprinkled throughout the book to show you teams that are struggling and eventually teams that are succeeding with AgileThe first methodology they discuss is Scrum. They do this very intentionally because Scrum is probably the easiest Agile methodology to actually "adopt". It has clear practices and more closely resembles "traditional" software development process compared to the other methodologies. The second methodology they discuss is XP which I have heard is highly influential in the Agile field with luminaries such as Kent Beck and Martin Fowler as early leaders of the field, however to be honest I have never heard of anyone working in a software team they would describe as "XP". The most charitable way to interpret this is that many of the XP values, principles, and practices have trickled down into mainstream "Agile" consciousness. The easiest way to summarize XP is "embracing change" and the authors show you how they support that overarching goal through practices such as unit testing to facilitate refactoring and delaying decisions until the last moment. The last part describes the Lean and Kanban methodologies which are closely related. In short, they focus on continuous improvement. Before reading the book, I had heard about a Kanban board and the idea of moving tasks around different columns, but the real eye-opener was their emphasis on the importance of Work In Progress (WIP) limits. They show you how vital it is to have WIP limits and why you need to be careful of ignoring it (which oftentimes happen as they demonstrate).Probably my favorite part of the book is when they describe teams that partially apply Agile methodologies while still retaining much of their legacy software development practice and end up achieving OK but "better than nothing" results. I think it's easy to think of Agile as the end all be all of good software development practice but it's a journey to actually achieving it and I like how they show you the realistic challenges of going from a traditional software development methodology to agile.

I'm a bit more than halfway through this book and it has been immensely helpful. My workplace is kind of agile, with each dev team doing their own thing, which can be frustrating for people who aren't on that team or have to work with all of them at different times like I do. I feel like this book gives me exactly the insight I need to practice agile better, and I'd feel comfortable getting an agile team set up after reading this. I would recommend this book to anyone working in an agile environment and then branching off to specific books afterwards.

Everything about this book is about right. Clear, Lots of (fictional) scenarios where they follow a team story and demonstrate the pros/cons and value of the agile approach. The authors have gone out of their was to make this a fun read with applied theory and situations that help you lock in the theory much better. Nice job.

I was recommended this book by a design leader of mine. Great book if you’re new to agile. Puts practice into scenarios and real-life application. Also easy to look up specific aspects of agile and read up on a need-to-know basis.

The book goes over several different agile methodologies along with their values and practices. There are plenty of examples and charts to help understand agile development. I did feel like the book was more directed at people who are using a waterfall process, while we already use agile at work and I wanted to just learn more.

I've done a lot of Agile reading and training, and this is the best (along with Personal Kanban). Make this your go-to Agile reference text.

A good book overall, gives you a solid foundation. Explains well what Agile should feel like and what makes it tick. The main drawback is that it doesn't describe well enough the basic practices and ceremonies of Scrum. To use the book's own terminology, it lacks "shu"-level rules, but is way too thorogh with "ha"-level concepts. You may need additional resources to actually get to using Scrum in your work

This book is a good resource for anyone who needs a refresher or learning about the Agile methodologies for the first time. The organization of the chapters make it easy to read and retain the information covered. I would recommend this book to anyone who is new to an Agile team or wants to start an Agile team.

I’ve been a fan of Ian Rankin’s Rebus from his early books but I think it’s time for one of us to part company.Earlier books were cutting edge but I found this one to be tired, cliched and with a story that stretches the imagination too often and relies on chance just a bit too much.If this was the work of a newer writer, I might have given it four stars because even though the writing fails to sparkle the story is better than average. But truth is I expect better from Rankin.

I certainly admire Ian Rankin's ability to deliver a story as fresh as the first...on this 22nd Rebus novel. John Rebus may be retired, in failing health, but he's as sharp as ever and as devious when necessary. Many of the cast of characters you've come to know (and love) reappear - DI Clarke, Malcolm Fox, and of course, Big Gur, that bad guy you love to hate or hate to love. You will need your wits about you to keep up with this story and its twists and twists and large number of characters. It's complicated, complex and very satisfying. Two cases, one from twelve years earlier then a missing persons, now a murder, and one recent conviction that may or may not be justified, are on the team's plate. Rebus, while unofficially on both cases, manages to ferret out things and help tie up both cases. They are not neatly tied up, however; they do not require belief in the impossible or improbable but are realistically just.

How on earth does the series just keep getting better? Rebus is the real face of Scottish Police and as he grows older, all the elements of a changing UK and world rotate around him, simply making the story more believable and more astonishing! Utterly engrossing and unputdownable!

Retired Edinburgh police detective John Rebus is like an old friend fallen on hard times, battling boredom and emphysema but still with useful insights for police colleagues and readers alike. In this novel, he is regarded as a valued former colleague, although some old enemies persist and the politics remains murky. A wonderful addition to the Rebus canon.

“In a House of Lies” (HL), is the fifth and the very best of the Rebus post-retirement books, following “Exit Music” (EM), written in 2010. EM concluded (?) a seventeen book series of novels of Scottish Police DI John Rebus; “Knots and Crosses”, published in 1987, was the first. I would also rank HL in the top three of all Rebus novels. As I write this ( Feb, 2019) I have no idea what other Amazon readers think of this new release – usually I check the decimal score, 4.5?, and number of reviewers, 89?, but I was anxious to get into this new one, and…..well, maybe later.I have enjoyed the first four retired Rebus books but I felt something had been missing, and I didn’t much care for the “yesterday’s news” treatment of our protagonist. I had read some other Rankin stuff after EM – I believe there were two highlighting a new character, Malcolm Fox, whom I never cared for, and another focusing on an art theft as I recall; it put me to sleep, more than once. I am sure the author did not plan for Rebus retired, and that fan pressure contributed to the Rebus books post EM. HL makes the case that the last five are on a par with the first seventeen.HL deals with a dead body recently found in the boot of car hidden in a small forest; the victim, a young PI, had been missing for the past twelve years. And so begins a rather complex plot, with many characters, old and new, subplots right and left and mostly linked, great dialog, scenes that you will reread just for the sheer pleasure they deliver, scenes that leave you hanging……a book you look forward to picking up again. It starts slow. I suggest that readers carefully note all characters – that will not be easy but it will pay dividends. Thankfully, it does NOT rely on DNA. I don’t recall seeing the term in the book, but it does introduce some relatively new forensic science. And there is a terrific climax; of course, it is not a shoot-‘em-up, but I will tell you it is so Rebus perfect, and you will be teased for the prior twenty pages with hints of what is to come. It is evident even to a casual reader like myself that Rankin really worked and re-worked this one. There are so many nice little touches than a writer of lesser skills just cannot conjure up in such a long-term series – and I think that is what has been missing in some earlier Rebus novels. It is incredible that Rankin has been able to bring all these characters with a freshness and a taste of old times that leave the series faithful praying for more. This is a six, on a one to five scale.

Ian Rankin never fails to satisfy. And it all seems real, and indeed, poignant with an aging Rebus seeming to struggle with being retired, and on the "outside." One cringes a bit as this older version of Rebus keeps trying to edge in, get info, drop tips....and yet, we know he's still got the right stuff. Indeed, as the chapters roll on, connections suddenly are realized, and our faith in Rebus's honed skills is rewarded. Well written and skillfully revealed, this one's utterly satisfying. Only quibble is like Rebus and challenges of aging -- the innumerable names and characters require some effort to keep in order, to remember who is who.

What more does one need to say? Ian Rankin’s policeman may be retired (reluctantly) but, luckily for us, one of his old cases has a new development and Rebus uses his old relationship with Siobhan to get involved, and eventually solve the case. I love Rebus. He never disappoints.

So disclaimer, I'm a huge Rebus fan, and ex-pat Edinburgh native ... therefore I am biased, but this was another great Rebus story, with all our favorite characters and a few new ones - you wont be disappointed by this latest story, it is another winning (formulaic) outing with John, and the usual crew... but I do wonder how many more stories there are (left) in the series what with Rebus'es illness - will there be a "Reichenbach Falls" climax between John and "Big" Ger Cafferty - and how is the Oxford Bar coping now that Rebus has cut his alcohol intake - the fan's eagerly await the answers ...

I bought this set for my daughter who just turned 7 years old. She absolutely loves reading and I knew it would be something she would enjoy reading. Every night we read several chapters together and I am so proud of her, these books are great!! They really keep her entertained and wanting to actually keep reading. I knew that it could be a challenge, because some vocabulary was way past her level, but it’s been great because she has learned many new words! All in all, absolutely love this set!Oh and my son(3 years old) loves hearing in on us reading!

I HAD to purchase this set for a few of the girls in my 5th grade class. They have devoured this series. These books are great for upper elementary students.

Mermaids are all the rage right now. Anything that will get kid's attention and get them reading is great. Purchased for an 11 year old, but could probably span ages 8 thru 13.

My 7 year old daughter (will be 8 in a couple weeks) LOVED the first book but was a bit scared by the second so we are going to hold off until she's a bit older.

We bought these to read to our 5 year old daughter. She really enjoys the story. The story is more complex then other chapter books we have read to her (Junie B. Jones and Magic Tree House), so there were times where she seemed a bit bored. Our 11 year old asked to borrow them from her sister and she enjoyed them.

My 8 year old daughter loves these books!!! Such good stories and we love the 6 pack so she already has the next one in line every time she’s done with a book!!

My 8 yr old daughter is LOVING this series! She loved the Nevergirls too, but this one is her favorite. Definitely recommend if you have a daughter who loves mermaids.

The best series my 7 year old daughter and I have read together ever and we read a lot. The story is equally interesting for parents and kids. We both get so excited about reading each night because we can’t wait to see what happens! Highly recommend!

The brain's conscious activity essentially transcends the forms or possibilities of computation. Penrose (mathematics, Oxford) illustrates his thesis via mathematical logic, including detailed discussions of Godel's proposition of incompleteness, Turing's machines and computabilities, quantum mechanics, and microbiology. Eventually, Penrose argues that artificial intelligence and computer-controlled expert systems are capable of assisting local human expertise but will not be able to replace such expertise. Expanding on some of the ideas and concepts proposed in his controversial book, The Emperor's New Mind (Oxford Univ. Pr., 1989), Penrose challenges others to reconsider traditional concepts. Some familiarity with mathematical logic or processes will facilitate one's appreciation of this book. Recommended for scholars, specialists, and informed lay readers.Donald G. Frank, Harvard Univ., Cambridge, Mass.Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews

A leading critic of artificial intelligence research returns to the attack, attempting to lay the groundwork for an analysis of the true nature of intelligence. Building on his arguments in The Emperor's New Mind (not reviewed), Penrose (Mathematics/Oxford) begins by refuting the assertion that true intelligence can be attained--or even adequately simulated--by the strictly computational means to which current computers are ultimately limited. Much of his argument depends closely on the application of G”del's Undecidability Theorem to Turing machines--deep waters for laypeople, although the fundamentals of his argument are accessible to readers without sophisticated mathematical training. Having disposed of the central tenets of current AI research, Penrose then turns to an even more fundamental question: the actual foundations in modern physics (i.e., relativity and quantum theory) of the phenomenon of consciousness. Here much of his summary depends on fairly complex mathematical reasoning, although the key points are summarized for the general reader who has been willing to follow him so far. Penrose feels that a new physical synthesis, reconciling the paradoxes of quantum theory and bringing them into harmony with Einstein's gravitational theories, is ultimately necessary to explain the noncomputational elements of consciousness and intelligence. He speculates on the possible role of cellular structures called microtubules in creating a quantum phenomenon on a macroscopic scale within the brain, but grants that more research is needed to establish any connection between physical and mental phenomena. His conclusion steps back to a philosophical overview of the subject, paying homage to Plato, among others. A challenging examination of a central problem of modern philosophy, with no final answers but plenty of food for thought. I rate this book highly for its many interesting insights---great food for thought. I think Penrose' assessments of models of consciousness by other physicists are on the mark, including his critique of decoherence theories. He is probably on the right track in treating the collapse of the wave function as a real phenomenon, in which case he is correct is saying "what is going on will have no chance of being properly understood until we have a much more profound appreciation of the very nature of matter, time, space, and the laws that govern them." (p. 395)I was not persuaded by Penrose' own theory at all. The only connection between quantum mechanics and consciousness is that they are both mysterious. Moreover, it is the qualia of consciousness that is mysterious, not the fact that we are non-algorithmic.

Penrose is my favorite science author. He's not for everyone -- he's not afraid to use mathematics, and his diagrams (for me) are often unintelligible, but his pursuit of an understanding of the mind at the quantum level is worthwhile, even noble.

You think when you skim it "oh this is too mathy" but it isn't. You can understand everything, without any advanced math skills at all!

Another stunning book by Sir Roger Penrose. It's really a five star book discounted here by one star because those lacking physics and mathematics will find some passages hard work, even though the author is being as kind as possible in a book of this calibre. The book is a neat sequel to his "The Emperor's New Mind", extending the central theme that our little-understood human consciousness allows us to think way beyond the computational and mindless world of artificial intelligence. In doing so, we have a marvellous survey of classical and modern physics, including the mysteries of the quantum world.Sir Roger raises the question 'Will we ever be able to truly understand our own Nature-provided brain and its processes in terms of our own science?', and argues that, somewhere out there beyond our present reach, there is a unifying Platonic view of the Universe. This book is a tour de force on several planes. Highly recommended.

Penrose's writing is somewhat thick. It is worth slogging through it, however. Consciousness is the X factor in experiments. It is a large part of quantum mechanics. I liked this book. It is not light reading, though.

I studied physics and math and love popular science. Still, I found this book obtuse and non-engaging. Gave up after 3 focused attempts at reading it.

This is not an easy book to read or to follow. Still, it's required reading for someone like me who is interested in the Penrose-Hameroff theory of consciousness. I am always grateful when academics like Penrose write books for the general public.

Excellent alternative view to mainstream philosophy. Vast improvement over the emperor's new mind, especially in terms of having taken criticism on board. It can be read independently, even though it can also be read as a sequel of sorts. If mind and consciousness are interesting to you, and you like hearing about theories in physics, this is a great book.

I'll put the summary upfront: using the principles and plans in the 10-Day Detox Diet, I lost 12 lbs in the first 10 days, a total of 21 lbs in the first 30 days and now 30 lbs total in the first 50 days. (Update: as of August 2015 I've lost 60 lbs total). In addition, my overall feeling of health and my energy levels increased greatly.A little about me: I'm in my mid-fifties and am a relatively big-framed guy who stands 6'1" and weighed 310 pounds when I started this plan. That was about 110 lbs overweight as my ideal weight is about 200 pounds (it's been a long time since I've been there so I'll let you know for sure when I get there). This book was recommended to me by a life coach I was seeing. I purchased the 10-Day Detox Diet, read it thoroughly and loved the sound science and principles behind the ideas. Following the plans in the book, I prepped my refrigerator and pantry, purchased vitamin supplements and fiber pills, tapered back on Dove dark chocolates (my main addictive habit), picked the day I would start and jumped in.I haven't felt hungry since.Good things that have happened in the first 50 days: I lost 30 pounds and 1.5 inches off my neck and 3 inches off my waist (just a representative sample; I slimmed down in other places on my body as well). My cravings for fatty foods and sugar disappeared. I'm sleeping better, some nagging inflammation in my knees cleared up and my digestive elimination challenges cleared up. My patience increased for handling both my interpersonal relationships and life's little problems. I have more energy for work and throughout the day. My overall feeling of health improved greatly. I feel like, after all the efforts I have made to lose weight over the years and after all the ups and downs my weight has been through, I've finally found the right set of intellectual tools to approach eating. Feeling this good is motivation enough to keep me eating healthy for the rest of my life. After about 20 days on the plan I also went back to Amazon and purchased Dr. Hyman's Blood Sugar Solution Cookbook to expand my access to additional recipes. Once I got the hang of how Dr. Hyman combines the ingredients for dishes and meals, I started experimenting with carefully modifying some recipes to tweak them for my own particular culinary preferences. If you use good common sense it's easy to mix and match ingredients and spices to tailor dishes and meals to your liking. I enjoy cooking and like to experiment in the kitchen. Your mileage may vary and the provided recipes are just fine the way they are presented. I'll keep doing this as long as my weight loss continues apace and my overall feeling of health stays strong. If I go too far afield, I'll just move back closer to the original recipes.'The real trick now is making sure I eat healthy over the long term. I already passed my first big test: a long overdue vacation at an ocean-side resort with lots of social interaction and eating out at restaurants. During the short trip I managed to lose 5 lbs instead of gaining weight as I likely would have in the past. Once again, I feel like I have the tools I need in Dr. Hyman's program to handle all situations.Side note: I did a sleep study three months ago and was diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea. Many overweight people who snore loudly like me have sleep apnea and don't know it. Since I was tested, and prior to starting the 10-Day Detox diet, I started on a CPAP machine and have been diligent about using it so I credit this with also helping me to have the energy to face up to my dietary challenges. I think it would have been much more difficult to lose weight without also dealing with this condition first.I believe good health is a combination of restful sleep, breathing fresh air, drinking lots of fresh water, eating healthy food of high quality, mitigating stress and exercising regularly. I feel I have the other items in order and now I will tackle the stress and regular exercise portions.Best of luck on your particular journey toward health. The 10-Day Detox Diet continues to work well for me, perhaps it will work for you too. Highly recommended.Update July 2014: In the first 100 days I have lost 44 lbs and feel great. I'm sticking with the principles laid out in Dr. Hyman's books as they are working well for me.Update September 2014: I hit my halfway point and I'm now down 55 lbs. This feels great as I've struggled with my weight most of my adult life. Best of all, others around me have taken inspiration. One person I know has lost over 40 pounds in the last three months just by utilizing information from Dr. Hyman's books that we talked about and is now at his ultimate goal weight and is very trim! I'll get there too. The key for me is that I don't feel deprived. I eat plenty of good food but now just the food that is good for me. The rate of my weight loss has slowed but is still steady. I now need to concentrate on making regular exercise a part of my life.Update January 2015: My weight loss has plateaued at 55 lbs down for the last 4 months and I still have 55 lbs more to lose. I just saw my cardiologist and he is very happy with my progress and my blood work showed huge improvement from before I started this lifestyle change to now. To continue my weight loss I need to trim back my portion sizes a little and start exercising consistently. I'm confident I'll get to my goal weight of 200 lbs or less in 2015. I'm sticking with Dr. Hyman's program.Update August 2015: This hasn't been a linear and easy journey but I'm back on the right path. Earlier this year, I slowly put on 10 lbs to 265 lbs as a response to stress from challenges I experienced both professionally and personally. Also, I noticed Dr. Hyman's program shared many similarities with the Paleo diet and I experimented with combining the two programs. I feel my main problem is portion control. I have the mistaken idea that if something is healthy to eat you can have as much of it as you want. This is not true for me particularly when it comes to animal proteins and nuts.No excuses though. I started exercising regularly and have been briskly walking for about 40 minutes per day, 7 days per week for the last three months. The scale didn't move for me though until I made some changes to my portions that were holding me back. I trimmed back on my animal protein portions at each meal, cut out the snacking on cheese that had crept in and reduced the portion size on nuts that are my go-to snack. Now, between the portion control and regular exercise, the scale is going down and I've lost 15 pounds in the last month. I'm now at 250 lbs for a total weight loss of 60 lbs. My goal weight remains 200 lbs so I have a ways to go but I'm feeling good about what I'm doing.I have recommended the 10-day Detox Diet to several people who have asked me how I've lost weight. Those that have purchased the book, read it thoroughly and adopted Dr. Hyman's principles have successfully lost weight and cleared up some health concerns as well. I continue to highly recommend this book and the info it contains. Be well!

First off, let me say, I am not a man. I won't be reporting a 30 lb. weightloss in 30 days. Not happening. I'm a 49 year old, pre-menopausal woman. I had 3 kids in the span of 5 years between the ages of 37 and 42. Not an easy task at that age from a weightloss standpoint. After my first was born, I did WW and had no problem taking the weight off. After the second, it wasn't so easy and after the third, all but impossible. I've been a vegetarian for 30 years and a vegan for 3. I know a lot about nutrition, or at least what the nutritionists have told us was right. I'm not at all blowing smoke when I tell you I eat around 1200 calories a day and workout 4-5 times per week doing vigorous workouts. None of it mattered. Nothing worked. Nothing.I went to my primary care physician and had a long conversation with her about my unhappiness with my weight. She commented that my BMI wasn't all that bad and that, perhaps, "this is just who you are". What??? That statement very much felt like giving up and the fact that I took the time to discuss this with her was evidence that I wasn't ready to give up just yet. I was starting to feel like I was living in someone else's body. I often felt anxious and jittery. Was this pre-diabetes? For a couple of years, I was convinced it was my thyroid - mostly because I couldn't figure out why nothing would work. Then I'd have my thyroid tested and it would come back normal. I chalked it up to pre-menopause hormonal problems and figured I'd just continue to be overweight.I decided to give the 10-day detox a try. Why not? I've bought so many books over the years in a desperate attempt to figure out what's wrong....what's one more, right? I was a bit worried that being a vegan would slow my weightloss compared to non-vegans. Given the results he reports in the book from his study group, it has not slowed my progress at all. I started the plan nearly a month ago exactly. With two days to go in my month, I've lost 12 pounds. I even got stuck at the same weight for a week and a half and still lost 12 pounds! And, much of that was without strenuous workouts because my body had a tough time adjusting to the low carb diet. I was lacking energy, etc... I did not cheat at all. Never once. I didn't follow the menus completely, but followed the guidelines. Shake for breakfast, protein and veggies/greens for lunch and dinner. Only in the first couple of days did I feel hungry. After that, my body adjusted and I now feel satisfied after every meal. I take the PGX pills regularly. I love that you are able to season your food on this diet. So many other diets I've tried eliminate sodium almost completely. Eating becomes so boring, you want to gag. I get to use salt and pepper and onion powder and tamari, etc... It makes eating so enjoyable. Who knew that what I was eating before was so wrong for me? Whole grains, etc... I won't lie and tell you my cravings are gone. I don't know who those people are, but I've had 49 years of conditioning to create those cravings. They're not going to disappear in 30 days. I still crave bread when I smell it being toasted and often crave something sweet (dark chocolate) after dinner. For several years, I'd seen my blood pressure be slightly elevated at the doctor's office. I'd always chalked it up to white coat hypertension because I could go back home and get a lower reading with my own cuff. However, those readings were always in the 135/85 neighborhood. Not horrible, but they could stand to be lower. After one week on this diet, I started getting readings of 125/75 and my lowest was 118/70. Pretty awesome.I can't say enough good things about how this book is written. It makes so much intelligent sense. I also bought his "Eat Fat, Get Thin" book, but have decided to stay on the 10-day detox (as he recommends) since I have 30 lbs to lose. If you're a woman of that certain age who has struggled to lose weight no matter what you try, give this a try. If it worked for me, you'll likely have success too. Thank you, Dr. Hyman!

About the Author

For Elaine N. Marieb, R.N., Ph.D., taking the needs of nursing and other allied health students into account has always been an integral part of her teaching style. Dr. Marieb began her teaching career at Springfield College, where she taught anatomy and physiology to physical education majors. She then joined the faculty of the Biological Science Division of Holyoke Community College in 1969 after receiving her Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. While teaching at Holyoke Community College, Dr. Marieb pursued her nursing education, which culminated in a Master of Science degree with a clinical specialization in gerontology from the University of Massachusetts. This experience, along with continual feedback from health care professionals (including generations of former students taught by Dr. Marieb), has inspired the unique perspective and accessibility for which this book is known. Dr. Marieb’s commitment to students extends beyond teaching and writing. Recognizing the challenges students face, Dr. Marieb contributes to the New Directions Program at Holyoke Community College by funding a staffed drop-in center and by providing several full-tuition scholarships each year for women who are returning to college after a hiatus or attending college for the first time. She also funds the E. N. Marieb Science Research Awards at Mount Holyoke College (which promotes research by undergraduate science majors) and has underwritten renovation and updating of one of the biology labs in Mount Holyoke's Clapp Laboratory. Recognizing the severe national shortage of nursing faculty, Dr. Marieb also underwrites the Nursing Scholars of the Future Grant Program at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. In 1994, Dr. Marieb received the Benefactor Award from the National Council for Resource Development, American Association of Community Colleges, which recognizes her ongoing sponsorship of student scholarships, faculty teaching awards, and other academic contributions to Holyoke Community College. In May 2000, the science building at Holyoke Community College was named in her honor. Dr. Marieb is an active member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Additionally, while actively engaged as an author, Dr. Marieb serves as a consultant for the Benjamin Cummings Interactive Physiology® CD-ROM series. This text— Anatomy & Physiology Coloring Workbook, Tenth Edition—is the latest expression of her commitment to the needs of the students pursuing the study of A&P. When not involved in academic pursuits, Dr. Marieb is a world traveler and has vowed to visit every country on this planet. Shorter term, she serves on the board of directors of the famed Marie Selby Botanical Gardens and on the scholarship committee of the Women’s Resources Center of Sarasota County. She is an enthusiastic supporter of the local arts and enjoys a competitive match of doubles tennis.

This book was an excellent educational tool and helped make learning a little bit more fun. This was a book that was required for the nursing program I completed, and I'm really glad that it was. I'm sure there's a newer edition by now, but if anything, it can only be better than this one. I highly recommend this for anyone interested in learning more about anatomy and physiology!

This is perfect for reinforcing the A&P information..especially given that my Prof is using the A&P textbook by the same author 10th ed. (same with corresponding lab). There are exercises that go far beyond 'coloring' that really help. This is a MUST purchase for any A&P takers or for those wanting to solidify concept for whatever reason.

This book is very difficult to learn from on its own. It's probably fine for someone attending an A&P class. However, for my purposes (self-directed learning), it's not good. Diagrams are in the wrong order, information is contradictory, and many complicated concepts are not explained. I have considered purchasing the accompanying textbook, but the reviews for it are less than inspiring.

My daughter needed this as one of her anatomy physiology course. Seems great so far. My 4 stars is because quite a bit of pages are all wrinkled no biggie but 65 dollars should have no wrinkles. It's was shipped with another book that was also wrinkled not as bad as this one.

When I purchased this book I did not realize that it really needs to be used along with the textbook. It is full of information and is or would be good as a supplement to the textbook but is not necessarily good as a standalone book.

This is really not a coloring book at all.... very few items to color. It is more like a study guide to accompany the textbook, but it does not help me at all in the anatomy course that I am currently taking. There are much cheaper and better coloring books available (at 1/4th of the price of this one) for use with anatomy courses. I love the coloring books because I feel they really cement the information into my head, just not this book. It should not be called a "coloring" workbook. I feel like this is false advertising. This book is not worth the cost.

I was sold a “book” that is missing chucks of the book. This wouldn’t even be labeled as “Good” let alone “Fair”. They shouldn’t have sold this book at all.

I love this book it helped me pass anatomy and physiology 1 and 2 !!! I had much more fun coloring to learn than stareing at a book or flash cards. I highly recommend if you are trying to learn anatomy.
